How this compare to nvidia shield or new fire stick?
    Zooicidal's avatar
It depends on what you want from a streaming device. If all you use are official apps like Netflix, Disney etc it's the best device on the market in terms of speed and subjectively the overall slickness of the UI. However if you are into home theatre with Plex, Kodi etc and have an Atmos audio setup then you'd be better with a Shield for the comprehensive codec passthrough which ATV4K boxes don't have. Firesticks are like budget Shields that are good for the price but side by side can't compete, the cube gets close but I'd rather just buy a 2nd hand shield 2019 for not much more.

Then there's side loading third party apps with android devices, personally I couldn't do without that.

Would it be better than native LG Oled WebOS or does make it more sense to pair with older / cheaper TVs ?
    cantonbean's avatar
It's a massive upgrade to webos. The only built in OS that can compare is Sony or other TVs that run android. Even then sometimes they don't support frame rate matching or in the case of Sony and some TVs (might have changed) the upscaling only works on external devices. I've owned/tried most devices and Apple TV for official streaming is best. It also has no advertising and you can control tracking. I do use a fire stick 4K and Google Chromecast in the house but the apple TV basically have an iPhone chip inside so will last for years without slowing down. I would say if you're an android user it's not as appealing but even then if you have apple music it's a great way to use that as well.

    Worth a watch (edited)

Netflix Interactive stuff where you chose your own story/ending don't work with Apple TV boxes

Finally decided to bite. This better be good, or better than my Fire stick 4K I hope!

They're refurbished ..129 quid? If you go to argos etc it's 149 brand new

Just looked at this page yesterday and there was nothing and was going to buy new, thanks for this, got the 128gb one

Had my eye on this for a while. Bought one this morning and can finally watch Sky Go in HD! thanks for posting. Heat added!
    Tom678's avatar
You can watch sky go on these? I thought it was limited to consoles/tablets/phones

Apple TV is rubbish I have the 3 month free trial and the majority of the items you have to pay extra for. Only the apple tv+ is free, but has not many things worth watching, just low budget films and shows. Prime is just as bad. Only disney+ has everything included.

    YES THANKS!!

For official streaming apps there is nothing that can touch Apple TV. Only one that seems to support all formats and frame rates and HDR.
    coco_cool's avatar
Any media player App besides Infuse that plays all formats off a NAS?

Great find, 128gb version ordered HOT:)

Also, available 128gb refurbished version £139.99 personally I would pay the extra £10 and get that one (edited)
    TheGhost's avatar
I'd go to John lewis etc pay the extra £20 for a brand spanking new one...these are 2022 god knows how they've been used .not a chance in he'll I'd pay 95% of full price on a refurb/used item

Lack of a fully functional Stremio app is biggest problem here.

Only thing holding me back. Brilliant device but software letting it down.

Bought the 21 refurbished from Apple last year the same time with the deals from Quidco and they worked out £85… Wish they had the same deal this year. £20 off for 2nd had seems like a terrible deal

Only looked yesterday and the page was empty. Glad I held off. Bought because the OS on my new Panasonic OLED is rubbish.
  15. alexnnnu's avatar
Does anyone know if Smarters Player works on this? Thanks.

Why they removed the Ethernet port is beyond me...... Typical Apple (and, I'm a fanboy)

The 128GB model (just £10 more) has an ethernet port.
  18. bɿɒW_ꙅiɿʜƆ's avatar
Nice. 30 off the 128GB vs new is pretty good  since discounts that model seem to be rare, and the extra storage and wired network port are easily with the extra.
I have more confidence in an Apple refurbished device than something like Cex.

If you are deep into the Apple ecosystem like me, then ATV is a no brainer. Best range of streaming apps, frame rate matching and Atmos support, and Apple’ streaming quality for ATV+ and purchased movies is about the best there is.

For media player, Infuse isn’t free, but it is really good, plays everything I have thrown at it and one purchase or sub gets it for all your Apple devices, which in our case is 4 iPads, 2 iPhones and 2 (now 3) ATVs.
    desbode's avatar
+1 on Infuse for me too. It even plays Dolby Atmos content
  19. Tomarse49's avatar
Mine arrived today, other than it saying apple certified refurb on the box, you can’t tell the difference from a brand new one
    bɿɒW_ꙅiɿʜƆ's avatar
Same here, not even the tiniest mark on it, exactly as new other than says refurbished on the box.

Been waiting for these to come back in to stock
  21. kombarris's avatar
Does anyone know if you get three months Apple TV with the refurbished models?
    bravo2zero1's avatar
it's random , I got 6 months free Apple Music with some very used apple AirPods gen 1 ( 2 years old at that point ). I never got Apple TV for free when buying this from Apple Store for example however search on here , last week someone posted a link to free 5 months Apple TV which 100% works

How different is the BBC iPlayer app on Apple TV when compared with the app on LG webos (CX)? I've read mixed opinions on the Apple TV version. Is it right that the Apple TV version of the app doesn't support 4k shows like Planet Earth III etc?

edit: anyone wondering, no BBC UHD content isn't supported. bbc.co.uk/ipl…-tv (edited)

Even as an Apple user, I wasn't that bothered about the Apple TV box until recently, when I discovered that it now supports the Sky Go app (Apple TV HD onwards).

It's completely unique in this department, being literally the only portable device which allows you to watch Sky Go on a TV. Your only other options are game consoles or running a hdmi cable from your laptop, which is far from ideal for travelling.

Your apple tv works around the world? Would've thought you'd need different power supply/plug

128GB is OOS but the 64GB is still in stock. If your preference is for the 128 it will likely come back within a few months.

Is this any different to having the app via fire stick?
