I have seen a few Apple Watch deals recently on HUKD and noticed there are more questions regarding the watches themselves than just the deal. I’ve compiled some points which may help newbies. Please note these are purely my opinions and experience of the products, others will for sure have their own opinions. I have in fairness voiced common views from the community here, not mentioned any specific members otherwise the credits list will be pretty long

    General use for this gadget:

Watch, social media/email/calendar and sms notifications. Fitness tracker, controlling music, GPS vibration alerts, Apple Pay (very handy), MS 2FA and tracking misplaced iPhones (ping your phone). These are general uses. There are other features however they won’t be used as much in fairness. Down side is you end paying more attention to your watch than people around you. It’s as if you are a mosquito going towards the light! For some people the Apple Watch is a motivator to get into shape as it monitors your exercise output. There is a sense of achievement when you complete all 3 rings. Works for some, and not for others

Why do people give up on smart watches:

Because they need to be charged daily (takes an hour or so) and the mobile phone carries out most of the function anyways for most day to day needs (let’s face it, we carry our phones everywhere). They are too worried they will damage the watch.

Are there better smart watches out there?

Just do a simple google search and you will get top ten smart watches from T3, Which?, techradar etc etc. Anyone can do an internet search. For the sake of putting as much as I can in one place, here are some examples:

    Techradar

    PCMag

    Tom’s guide

Yes for professionals and enthusiasts there are better watches for diving, running, biking, swimming, tracking etc etc. Price ranges will vary greatly. There are plenty smart wearable deals that come up here on HUKD.

Yes some of the android devices look and feel much better like a traditional watch.

Apple has an ace of its sleeve (it’s USP if you will), it integrates seamlessly with the Apple eco system (iPhone, AirPods, TV etc). Their products are pretty intuitive. Yes you can’t side load custom apps and install non approved apps, for most of us, we don’t need that . Apple is trying to redefine what a watch should look like (albeit not to everyone’s taste), they have a good track record of this no? IPhone, AirPods, iPads etc.

To the Apple haters: I’m a fan of technology and how it’s evolving and changing our lives, don’t care of the make, I’m interested in what the product is delivering, be it Apple, MS, Android etc. So let’s not debate or comment how crap Apple is here on this deal. Also those considering switching from Apple to Android or vice versa, consider the impact as the eco systems are different and it can become very expensive if you put watches, phones and ear phones into the equation.

Will the watch work with non Apple mobiles?

Yes HOWEVER don’t bother. All the benefits are lost. Android users have alternatives ie Samsung Galaxy

How many versions are there and which is best for me?

Apple release models typically in September of each year. Current version is series 6. The case design hasn’t really changed since the series 4.

For a comparison of models try these sites:

    Apple

This site has a useful comparison table:

    The verge

    Special editions:

Hermes - mega expensive for the super rich. Stainless steel only with Hermes leather and silicon straps

Nike - only comes in aluminium. Please don’t buy because it’s Nike edition alone. Extra bits are:

Come with some exclusive band options
    Exclusive watch faces
    Nike Run Club app

    Case type to go for:

There are a few however aluminium and stainless steel are the most popular. There are pros and cons for each type. In summary:

Aluminium is cheaper and lighter however glass and case he easily scratched or damaged

Stainless steel is more expensive and a touch heavier. The glass is sapphire glass and the case is more robust too. The space black version is DLC and much more scratch resilient. The silver and gold will scratch more easily however can be polished.

    Useful article regarding DLC here

Useful article regarding sapphire glass on the watches here

Useful article re comparison between stainless steel and aluminium here

    Top tip:

If you can get a Space Black watch for under £350, that’s a good deal

    Sizes:

40mm or 44mm. Small wrists 40mm and medium to large go for 44mm. Let’s not stick with the stereotype where 40mm is for women only.

Useful size guide for Apple Watch here

    Cellular or GPS only version?

There is an added price premium to the cellular version. You then need to take out an additional contract to enable the esim on the Apple Watch which can cost circ. £7 per month. Please note you don’t need to enable cellular if you will only use the watch connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth. Cellular is really for those who go out for runs or biking and do t want to carry their phones. This makes the minority of us in fairness.

Mobile providers: currently EE, Vodafone and O2.

    Vodafone

    EE

    O2

Important note: Your main mobile contract needs to be on any one of the above. These are not available on business contracts yet so be mindful of this too. You can’t only get a stand-alone Apple Watch cellular contract as it’s an add on only.

Please note: if you get the watch from them, they will give a discount on the mobile tariff however you pay full price for the watch albeit over several months (still not worth it). Some of the contracts are for 12 months so if you want to sell your watch sooner, you end up paying for the remaining term otherwise the new owner can’t use the cellular function. It’s a real pain. Check this before taking out a contract.

Another alternative is to go with a eSim specialist Truphone. They will give you a separate connection that isn’t associated with your mobile. This can be a pain as you either give people the new number or forward calls to your watch when you only want to use your watch. The company isn’t highly rated yet. More information here

    Bands:

Milanese loop is more valuable. Not ideal for work outs or those with hairy wrists. Very good video review

Woven ones are comfortable however if you workout then they get so wet and uncomfortable

    Silicon are best all rounders

Leather looks good and the older they get the more rustic they get and become comfortable. They can be expensive though, the third party cheaper ones tend to unstitch and smell.

Genuine Apple bands are very good quality, they are extremely expensive though. Third party ones from Amazon and eBay and other places are cheap (I got some 44mm ones for £1) however quality is hit and miss. When slotting them into the case ensure they are a snug fit and don’t move around

    Genuine bands available here

    Alternative high quality bands:

    Mintapple

    The watch strap

As the Milanese loop is desirable, a lot of fakes out there selling as a genuine Apple loop. Beware of this, this article explains the difference between them

Here are some individual random bands I found in different places:

EPULY Compatible with Apple Watch Band 42mm 44mm 38mm 40mm,Business Stainless Steel Metal Wristband for iWatch SE & Series 6/5/4/3/2/1

    Other accessories:

    Charging docks:
Charging stands are available however most need you to use the original charging cable. Still not 100% convinced these are needed. I have tried the Belkin and PUGO ones.

Solid build and reasonable price however need to use your own cables - PUGO

This one is too expensive - Belkin PowerHouse Charge Dock for Apple Watch

The most basic and well rated - Spigen S350

    The Apple one, really expensive!

Case covers - they bulk up the watch and screen responsive can be impacted. Sorry I can’t recommend any. Case Bumpers are an alternative where they protect the sides and provide a little protection to screen via a lip. RhinoShield Bumper Case are well reviewed and come in colours

    Application installs:

Keep it simple and only install the apps you need.

Watch Chat 2 is used for WhatsApp. Was post here

Spotify to stream your content directly from the watch

    Nike Run App

    Strava Run & Ride

    Setup issues:

Avoid doing the software upgrade at first setup

Make sure you aren’t using VPN

Make sure watch is charged for at least 30min (their sometimes have charge and sometimes not straight out of the box)

Make sure you know the iCloud password (amazing how many peeps forget it)

Update the firmware on your phone

Try a couple of times if it fails. Otherwise connect to another WiFi network and try. If this fails try with another iPhone to eliminate your phone

If verification still fails, I found this article helpful: macrumors.com/2020/12/25/apple-verification-failed-stuck-configuring/

Brightness issue - watch not bright enough in dark environment. Useful article here

    Notification settings:

By default the Apple Watch mirrors all your iPhone notifications. You can disable these on your watch if you enable Do Not Disturb (typically during meetings). You can also fine tune the individual alerts, more information on how to do this available here

Another way to use you watch is to silence your iPhone and use the watch for all notifications including phone rings.

WhatsApp notifications work on the Apple Watch, the functionality is limited as there is no WhatsApp app. Useful article regarding this here with a workaround

    Apple refurbished stock:

Apple sell refurbished stock where their refurbished is as good as new. If you want to baseline prices for deals then check here

    Secondhand retailers outside of eBay:

Music Magpie - they have various levels and offer 12 month warranty

CEX - they have various levels and offer 24 month warranty

Good baseline pricing for a HOT Apple Watch deal:

I will focus on only the most common models and is purely my opinion for a guideline:

    Aluminium/Nike
    Series 5 - 40mm <£280, 44mm <£300
    Series 6 - 40mm <£330, 44mm <£350
    SE - <£250 and <£300 for cellular

    Stainless Steel
    Series 5 - 40mm <£300, 44mm <£320
    Series 6 - 40mm <£600, 44mm <£650

Series 3 - < £160. I’d rather go for the SE as the design is better looking.

Series 6 will drop in value, however in a years time

Please note: there have been series 6 deals for £300 or so with various voucher or discount codes. A staggering deal is always just around the corner and eagle eyed HUKD community catches them out

    Warranty

Apple warranty activates only once you connect the watch to your iCloud. It’s 1 yr and Apple are pretty awesome.

Interesting point: Currys have stated the warranty is 2 years on the aluminium and Nike versions. Assume it’s 1 yr and please confirm with Currys it’s deffo 2 year.

    Extended Apple warranty

Apple offer an additional warranty called AppleCare+. It’s not cheap and there is an access that needs to be paid per claim

Should you get? It’s a personal choice thing. Detailed review is available here

    Top Tip:

If you are buying a used Apple Watch ensure the iCloud account has been removed and the owner removed from their iCloud account completely. To check warranty status go here

    Battery service – United Kingdom

If your battery has a manufacturing issue that's covered by the Apple Limited Warranty, AppleCare+ or consumer law, we'll service your Apple Watch at no additional cost.

Apple warranty doesn’t cover batteries that wear down from normal use. We offer out-of-warranty battery service for a fee.

If your Apple Watch battery holds less than 80 per cent of its original battery capacity and it’s covered by AppleCare+, you will get Apple Watch battery service for no additional charge. Apple might need to test your product to find the cause of your battery issue.

    Battery life:

This varies as it depends on how you use the Apple Watch:

    Typical all-day use: 18 hours.
Calls placed from Apple Watch: 1.5 hours
    Indoor workouts: 10 hours
Outdoor workouts: 5 to 6 hours
Music playback: 10 hours from Watch storage or 7 hours streaming with LTE.
Takes 2.5hrs to fully charge and requires 1.5A

    Top Tip:

To check the Apple Watch battery charge while wearing it, swipe up on the watch face to open Control Center, which displays the battery percentage.

Should I wait for the next version of the Apple Watch?

Interesting debate this one as Apple are introducing minor changes every September. They have version patents and the following is generally being asked in HUKD:

    Blood pressure monitoring
Cheaper stainless steel versions (standard price is ridiculous)
A watch bezel to protect the screen
    Brighter screen
    Better battery life
    WhatsApp app

They have some interesting patents for the bands: patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2020/06/apple-wins-a-watch-patent-relating-to-next-gen-smart-bands-that-each-will-provide-very-specific-new-functionality.html

Please please please think long and hard before this purchase. A lot of HUKD are impulse buys. This one can be an expensive one and end up on private selling sites.

Any comments are welcome if I have missed anything out or if you need more info. Please don’t reply to this comment as it hogs up a lot of space. Best to just do a mention and I will respond (edited)

Is there any Milanese option in stock?

I got the 44mm stainless steel cellular with white band in the John Lewis deal .
I grabbed 2 steel bands from Amazon for £15 . The look great and very comfortable.

I got a Milanese in the sale before.. don’t get it. Bloody uncomfortable to wear, get the sports or leather band. I’m just keeping mine for when I have to dress up..!

If these deals are on every year I'm just going to keep upgrading every time. I cant go back to alu after having the SS model but at £750 for the series six the trick is to stay one model behind and let some other muppet pay the Apple tax.

I like technology. I like Apple gear & have an iPhone, iPad & MacBook. …I like technology. I like Apple gear & have an iPhone, iPad & MacBook. Haven’t worn a watch since my first smart phone. What am I missing?

I felt that way for quite a while and didn’t bother with one. Then I picked up a S4 fairly cheaply to try it out with the idea I’d use sell it on if it wasn’t for me. I‘d had a fitbit before and that was fine for step tracking. Here are the things I use it for, bit random
    * Listening to podcasts, easily skipping ads, pause, volume etc. Same with music. (easy to skip stuff when riding on my bike which otherwise would be impossible)
    * 2FA prompts with Microsoft Authenticator app so all the websites I login to I can just tap a notification on my watch
    * Exercise tracking obviously, cycling and walking for me mainly.
    * I have screen time setup for my kids so if they request extra time I can simply tap to allow it.
    * Message notifications from iMessage, Whatsapp etc when walking about. You can quickly see if it is something you need to bother responding to there and then.
    * Apple pay - big bonus in these times just simply putting the watch near the terminal. It means you don’t need to get gloves off your hands, take your mask off for face id etc. Just double tap the side button and wave your wrist. great for non touch payments
    * I use a Mac so having it unlock automatically when I am close using the watch is handy.
    * I have various little apps that are useful on my watch, stopping piHole temporarily if it is interfering with some websites loading.

Many of these can easily be achieved with a phone but it’s not always nearby.

A staggering deal is always just around the corner and eagle eyed HUKD community catches them out Warranty Apple warranty activates only once you connect the watch to your iCloud. Well I've been watching these deals since Christmas Day and I've manage to persuade myself I need one and I want it to be SS :D. The main caveat being that I promised my wife it was to motivate me to lose a bit of weight so I guess I have to do that now.

You get 7 - 14 days on other devices.GT2 Pro has titanium Chasis and ceramic back, quartz glass, looks better and is £200. Battery lasts 7 - 14 days. No Apple pay and no apps / Android wear but if you don't use your watch for Spotify or Strava etc it's not an issue.Better looking smart watches which are more useable due to much longer battery life and aesthetics are availble for less money plus you don't need an Apple phone to use them.

And I don’t understand why it bothers some people what others choose to spend their money on

I’ve compiled some points which may help newbies. Please note these are purely my opinions and experience of the products, others will for sure have their own opinionsGeneral use for this gadget:Watch, social media/email/calendar and sms notifications. Fitness tracker, controlling music, GPS vibration alerts. These are general uses. There are other features however they won’t be used as much in fairness. Down side is you end paying more attention to your watch than people around you. It’s as if you are a mosquito going towards the light! Why do people give up on smart watches:Because they need to be charged daily (takes an hour or so) and the mobile phone carries out most of the function anyways for most day to day needs (let’s face it, we carry our phones everywhere). They are too worried they will damage the watch. Will the watch work with non Apple mobiles?Yes HOWEVER don’t bother. All the benefits are lost. Android users have alternatives ie Samsung Galaxy How many versions are there and which is best for me?Apple release models typically in September of each year. Current version is series 6. The case design hasn’t really changed since the series 4.For a comparison of models try these sites:Apple: apple.com/uk/watch/compare/This site has a useful comparison table: theverge.com/platform/amp/21438413/apple-watch-series-6-se-5-3-comparison-smartwatch-models-versusCase type to go for:There are a few however aluminium and stainless steel are the most popular. There are pros and cons for each type. In summary:Aluminium is cheaper and lighter however glass and case he easily scratched or damaged Stainless steel is more expensive and a touch heavier. The glass is sapphire glass and the case is more robust too. The space black version is DLC and much more scratch resilient. The silver and gold will scratch more easily however can be polished.DLC article is very informative: messinajewelers.com/blog/black-coating-watches-pvd-or-dlc/Useful article regarding sapphire glass on the watches:slashgear.com/apple-watch-scratch-resistance-ion-x-vs-sapphire-glass-27380853/Top tip:If you can get a Space Black watch for under £350, that’s a good dealSizes:40mm or 44mm. Small wrists 40mm and medium to large go for 44mm. Let’s not stick with the stereotype where 40mm is for women only. Useful article: wareable.com/smartwatches/apple-watch-size-guide-6454Cellular or GPS only:There is an added price premium to the cellular version. This makes the minority of us in fairness.Mobile providers: currently EE, Vodafone and O2. Please note: if you get the watch from them, they will give a discount on the mobile tariff however you pay full price for the watch albeit over several months (still not worth it)Bands:Milanese loop is more valuable. Not ideal for work outs or those with hairy wristsWoven ones are comfortable however if you workout then they get so wet and uncomfortable Silicon are best all roundersLeather looks good and the older they get the more rustic they get and become comfortable. Y try hey can be expensive though, the third party cheaper ones tend to unstitch and smell. Genuine Apple bands are very good quality, they are extremely expensive though. Third party ones from Amazon and eBay and other places are cheap (I got some 44mm ones for £1) however quality is hit and miss. When slotting them into the case ensure they are a snug fit and don’t move aroundSetup issues:Avoid doing the software upgrade at first setupMake sure you aren’t using VPN Make sure watch is charged for at least 30min (their sometimes have charge and sometimes not straight out of the box)Make sure you know the iCloud password (amazing how many peeps forget it)Update the firmware on your phoneTry a couple of times if it fails. am I bad, yep, you are spot on. I missed that point.

The stainless steel series 5 is deffo better value than the series 6 aluminium in my opinion for most day to day use. The functionality difference isn’t revolutionary so the material makes the SS better value.

Like with anyone, having the latest product is deffo the first thing you should considering. In this case the pervious generation at the price offered is a game changer.

Then I picked up a S4 fairly cheaply to try it out with the idea I’d use sell it on if it wasn’t for me. I‘d had a fitbit before and that was fine for step tracking. Here are the things I use it for, bit random* Listening to podcasts, easily skipping ads, pause, volume etc. Same with music. (easy to skip stuff when riding on my bike which otherwise would be impossible)* 2FA prompts with Microsoft Authenticator app so all the websites I login to I can just tap a notification on my watch* Exercise tracking obviously, cycling and walking for me mainly.* I have screen time setup for my kids so if they request extra time I can simply tap to allow it.* Message notifications from iMessage, Whatsapp etc when walking about. You can quickly see if it is something you need to bother responding to there and then.* Apple pay - big bonus in these times just simply putting the watch near the terminal. It means you don’t need to get gloves off your hands, take your mask off for face id etc. Just double tap the side button and wave your wrist. great for non touch payments* I use a Mac so having it unlock automatically when I am close using the watch is handy.* I have various little apps that are useful on my watch, stopping piHole temporarily if it is interfering with some websites loading. Many of these can easily be achieved with a phone but it’s not always nearby.

Pretty much exact same for me, never bothered for years but this exact list is pretty much what I use mine for. Great list (edited)
