All 110 Original Episodes Fully Remastered! Available on Blu-Ray™ For the First Time Ever on December 4, 2023.

2258 CE. Five hostile federations dominate the outermost regions of space. Heroes, thieves, and rare and exotic beings find refuge in this time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war on a lone space station - the last and best hope for peace between a hundred worlds, alien and human alike - Babylon 5.

Features pilot movie "The Gathering" and the main five seasons of the show, does not include the never remastered:

In the Beginning (tv movie - prequel)
River of Souls (tv movie - season 3)
Thirdspace (tv movie - season 3)
Call to Arms (tv movie - after season 5)
Crusade (spin-off sequel series - after Call to Arms)
Legend of the Rangers (failed future set spin-off pilot)
The Lost Tales (direct to DVD anthology 'episodes' movie)
The Road Home (August 2023 animated movie)
+ All commentary tracks found in the original DVD 'Ultimate Collection' boxset (which has all the above minus 'The Road Home').

Twitter statement from the show creator "...the release includes The Gathering (but not the movies or Crusade) because TG was our pilot (technically the first) episode, so it's a legit part of the series which fits the title mandate; the other movies were separate, and Crusade is a completely different series, so it doesn't belong in this box set.

This is essentially the same as the very nice 4:3 remaster done for HBO-Max, which matches the original broadcast, but putting it onto Blu-Ray increases the bitrate so it should look even better than it did there. WB wanted to include the commentaries but with everything else involved with this, it apparently wasn't feasible (that's the extent of what I was told, so I've no idea what that entails).

What matters is that after years of asking for a Blu-Ray release, which will make this show look more beautiful than it ever has before. Fans can now own the full series in pristine form on physical media without being held hostage by the whims of streamers. I'm very excited by this release, as it further assures the legacy of Babylon 5. Onward!"

How does this compare to the DVD boxset? I still have that on pile of shame to watch

Should be full HD for the live action and upscaled for the visual FX.

DVDs are a mess with cropped picture and rubbish visual FX.

The blu-ray set should be the best it will ever look and an improvement over the HD streaming versions due to the higher bit rate encoding.

Set is bare bones though, so no special features or commentaries that are on the DVDs.

It's been remastered in HD from the original 4:3 broadcast version. The DVD is in widescreen (it's actual "widescreen" as it was shot, not cropped from a 4:3 image). So why is the DVD in widescreen and the blu-ray in 4:3? There's a complicated answer which boils down to how the CGI effects were rendered. They were made for 4:3 rather than widescreen and then cropped for the widescreen release. So they look awful on the DVD widescreen version. (And I don't mean awful because the technology for TV CGI was in it's infancy, I mean awful as in blurred / out of focus). As it's too expensive to redo every single effects shot, they decided to remaster the 4:3 version. Truthfully? If the streaming versions are anything to go by, then B5 will look better than it's ever looked before.

I vaguely remember reading something about there being disagreements between the original people, wb and foundation imaging. They didn't want to hand over the cgi or had lost some of it or wanted more money as they never got paid properly the first time round. Or something like that.

The original cgi was done by foundation imaging on 20 Amiga's using lightwave by newtek. Then they used something called a rapter farm, that sent all the lightwave data from the Amiga over a network to a load of Dec alpha boxes to render everything faster than the Amiga could do it!

Just remember to buy the old 'Ultimate Collection' DVD release too or you'll have none of the ending.

Updated the main post to list all the content that didn't make the cut. 'In the Beginning' and 'Call to Arms' are so essential it's like releasing Star Wars and not including Empire. (edited)

So many of the cast have died early. They must have all gone to Z'Ha'Dum.

Cmdr Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) aged 60
    Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) aged 60
Dr Franklin (Richard Biggs) aged 44
    G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas) aged 59
Vir Cotto (Stephen Furst) aged 63
Zack Allan (Jeff Conaway) aged 60
    Delenn (Mira Furlan) aged 65

Strange not to have the Babylon 5 station on artwork cover.

Think there were licencing issues hence why you can only fly round B5. Would of made a great RPG or strategy game.

    $153 USD at Amazon US.

Quite surprised at the major drop for the UK.

I'd be careful with pre-ordering this. WB initially put out the DVDs with a number of problems. The same thing with the iTunes/Prime versions. Their quality control leaves a lot to be desired.

Great series. They also did 5 feature length films plus the Crusade series. Many hours of great watching.

It's a shame they never did a game based on this. Could of been interesting.

They did do some sort of interactive pc thing years ago. I had it.

I was kind of imagining a WOW style game or strategy game where you can build units etc. Were things really that basic in 1997? Warcraft came out 2002. Dune 2 was out 1992. It's not like RPG didn't exist.

you might be thinking of Star Trek Armada 1 and 2 where you could mod it to have B5 ships/stations instead of the Star Trek ones. It was an RTS game, loved it
  11. gummby's avatar
Yes I was imagining something much better than an arcade game. Not some modded game from Star Trek. So much could of been done with Babylon 5.
