Only 80W per channel? That's a no from me

Wattage does not matter in all but the most exceptional conditions.

I wish people would stop spreading this myth. You end up with poor blokes buying Arcam AVRs while running the most efficient Wharfedale speakers there are at a nominal listening distance....even with surrounds it does not matter.

Home Theatre subreddit is the best resource for AV Recommendations...

Question please. So I think this av can handle around 140kw per corner speaker. What’s the optimal speaker strength per corner I should get for this? My room is 8m x5m. Either speaker sets or simply advice appreciated. Many thanks.

I think you are looking at the power rating for 2 speakers with high distortion.

My advice is to jump on avforums.com and ask in avforums.com/forums/av-receivers-amplifiers.44/

I wouldn't worry too much about the power through, unless you plan to listen at cinema levels of loudness.

The x1700 is great, but if you want more than 7 speakers (7.1 or 5.1.2), you jump upto x3800 or x4700.

You don't have to spend a fortune, you can get cheap speakers like q acoustic 3010 range for a fraction of the price of monitor audio, Dali, b&w, kilpsh speakers etc. I had the x2300 and monitor audio bronze 5.1 set for almost 6 years, costing just over £1k. (edited)

Hi guys. I bought this unit. It's good but I have negative observations. Hdmi hand shake for devices plugged into the unit is problematic, sometimes you have to flip back and forth between ports to get a picture. Avr app so you can control unit is slow, buggy and not very intuitive. No Dolby Atmos or DTS X from a windows gaming pc plugged into the unit. I complained to PT and they offered me £40 further discount off the already discount eBay price, this unit cost me £370 on acceptance.. Denon are aware of these issues. (edited)

Same story with my 2800h even if any device is plugged into my tv or the avr unit, mine refuses to play dolby vision with dolby atmos at the same time for films that support both from my 4k google chromecast, it will only do one or the other. (edited)

Got one and it’s great. One word of caution in that I get weird HDMI handshake issues with Sky Q and had to resort to running that through the TV with a return arc link for sound. Apparently a known issue with current Denon receivers.

I have this with a 2tb Sky Q 4k box connected to the Denon. It does work but you have to turn things on/off in the right order or you lose sound and have to reset the hdmi output on sky or hdcp version on the Denon.

Is this an overkill if I just want to use a stereo setup? I want high end, but don't care much about 3d
    Jonwillis's avatar
    Jonwillis
It's not overkill, rather you are paying for features you don't want and not getting enough features you do want. The x1700 is fairly low end, the A1H is about £6k and by comparison to other brands like arcam, trinnov as the Trinnov Audio 16 is £18k!

If you are after just stereo I'm guessing it's for music. You should take a look at dedicated stereo amplifiers. Avforums can give you some recommendations based on the speakers you have or want. (edited)

Great price given how expensive these seem to have been of late. Desperately want to replace mine and this would be perfect! Wrong time though: post again in 6 months? . Great spot OP (edited)

This is a very good price, paid £465 last September as needed an upgrade. Couldn't believe how much prices have gone up and what limited choice there is at this price range.

I keep looking at this and the previous slightly cheaper deal on it but when I click the link it shows it as £399.17 but then in my basket the price goes up.
I don't use ebay much these days so can anyone explain this to me? It puts me off buying
    Supergolo's avatar

means they increased the price since you last saved it in your basket saved for later list

Got one last year for £50 more and it's great, but I had issues with the sound from my firetv cube and the amps auto eq setup sounding "hollow"... Had to spend an afternoon tweaking the audio to get it to sound as good as my old onkyo avr box

    Some strange mathematics here.
    On eBay it says enter APRIL20 code to take 20% off............On my calculator £479 - 20% = £383.20
Don't tell me I need a new calculator!
    Jonwillis's avatar

Sadly glasses cost more than calculators. You need to goto Specsavers and read the small print.

    So £479-£60 = £419

"The maximum discount you can receive is £60 per redemption "

Damn. Just bought a q950b. Should I buy this for my next house I move into when I have a proper cinema room? 😬
    Jonwillis's avatar
    Jonwillis
If it's a dedicated room I would get the x3800 for the improved room correction features. But that costs £1200, and you still need to factor in speakers.

    I highly recommended a 5.2.2 or 5.2.4 setup.

Soundbars work great in rectangular rooms with flat walls and ceiling (no windows, alcoves, L shaped room, etc) otherwise their surround sound won't work as it will bounce sound in the wrong directions (edited)

I have my speakers in a 5.1.2 setup for atmos attached to a Sony STR-DN1080. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade? (edited)

Only if you want 120hz vrr for a pc or games console. I have bought this and will sell in two years and upgrade to the Sony an1000 which launches June 2023. The Sony would be a good upgrade for you. £999 on launch, will likely be cheaper 6 months to a year once demand for it drops. I upgraded from the lesser Sony str790 and extra features in this Denon were worth it. The sound mix on my Polk 5.1.2 speakers are better than the Sony 790 and have a gaming pc hooked up to it althogh Atmos on it for pc gaming using Windows isn't working.

Hi - can anyone who has this tell me how the virtual surround on headphones sounds? I have a yamaha AV receiver and love the virtual surround on headphones for both gaming and movies. I am reluctant to switch brands as my old Onkyo didn't have this. But denon seems cheaper than yamaha on ebay. Does it have virtual surround on headphones and any good? Thanks!
