I use an i3 7060 as an ESXi host to run things that need more grunt than my Synology 920+ NAS. The 7060 is the same height as the Synology and looks quite neat sitting next to it. I also managed to shoe-horn a 2nd NIC into the box using the M.2 wi-fi slot and the DB-25 cut-out on the back...

    49879575-KFUM8.jpg
The 7060 uses much less power than my old Dell T20 server and the 8th gen i3 is around 50% faster than the Xeon in the T20 (which is equivalent to a 4th gen i5).

I got the idea from 'Project TinyMiniMicro' on ServeTheHome: servethehome.com/int…on/ (edited)

Would this be ok for a plex server... Thanks

i would say its a good starting point - you can put 1 2.5-inch HDD in there, or use USB external hard drives, the CPU is power efficient. (edited)

Just got around to opening mine and adding the HDMI port - straightforward job.

One oddity I've noticed is that the AC adapter itself seems very noisy: is this the same for everyone else?

This is the expansion to add a usb-c with alt mode support. Disregard the compatible systems list as I took a punt for my 7060 after looking up the part number and it worked a treat.

Worth looking on eBay .. just recently bought a 10th gen i5 with keyboard and mouse as new condition for £270 (the 5 series not 7 as this one). It's a lot smaller that I expected :/ but perfect four our needs. (edited)

I've got 2 of them and both are having the same issue with processor running (stuck) at just 0.76Ghz, no idea how to fix it, not happy with them.

Are you running them off a genuine Dell power supply of the correct specification? I have seen this issue before where it throttles the processor when it detects a 'foreign' power supply or one that isn't quite an equivalent spec to an original one. (edited)

What’s the best graphics card you could put in one of these? I would want to use it as a HTPC and emulator (MAME, 16/32-bit systems.)

There are no PCI-e slots in these, it's in a 1 litre case. I think the only way to add a GFX card would be to connect an external one via a Thunderbolt socket on an appropriately specified model.

Here's my 3070 to give you an idea of the size...

Looks as if it has two DisplayPort ports - is that right? Anyone know if if would be possible to run three monitors (either by daisy-chaining or some other method)? (edited)
    Berwhale's avatar
    Berwhale
It supports 3 displays. There is an option to add a third display connector when purchasing new...

Connect with ease: Support up to three monitors with two native DisplayPorts and optional third port. Choose from third DisplayPort, HDMI 2.0b, VGA, or USB Type-C Alt Mode. Support additional monitors with discrete graphics options.

    From: dell.com/ae/…/pd

You could wait for one to become available with the extra port, try to find the extra port and fit it yourself, or daisy chain monitors (requires DP out on monitor)

Can anyone comment on the power draw when idling.
Consider one for a Home assistant box.
This would be superior to a Rasp Pi, and likely cheaper too at current prices!

Great machine. I would probably see if I can get one used for less money but it’s a solid system. Stays super silent and still very quiet under load. Runs Windows 11 flawlessly.

You’d happily be able to game up to PS2, GameCube, Wii with this setup. I’m always surprised at what games they can play to be honest, obviously not graphic intensive ones.

I just looked at this to replace my very old desktop (which also runs home assistant in a container) but I need more RAM and storage.

Can anybody recommend something second hand that has space for a second full size hard drive, has more RAM, but like this uses little power when left running 24/7?

Bonus points if it'll run Minecraft nicely for the kids!

I'm very, very out of date concerning knowledge of computer hardware!

    I just bought 8, only 1 left.

Normally get slightly older ones for 150-200 on eBay so it’s a good deal direct from Dell. These will likely be basically brand new as well. Only ever buy the micro form factor these days they are so nice as office computers to transport around and keep on the desk.

any good deals for RAM for this one? looking to max out and google tells me it's "64 GiB of dual-channel DDR4-2666 memory" rather than 32 gigs mentioned by OP... anyone did their research for this bit?

Any kabylake pentium with plex pass will do 5+ 1080 HW streams and can be popped into a case with lots of HD space. If it is just for your home and not remote sharing this is ideal if you do not want to have storage in a case.

Is it possible to add an external GPU (eGPU) to these, perhaps connected in place of the wifi card (or via USB)?
