Crazy price when you consider all that's gone into getting them to the supermarket shelf!

Absolutely, when you consider to send a 2nd class letter costs 75p, God knows how far these have come.

They look far better than the awful ones being touted at 69p a week ago in Basingstoke.I looked through 4-5 boxes and walked away, shame as they are my favourite Melon. And If they had been any smaller could of been mistaken for Walnuts !.

They were 79p on Tuesday, they're not massive, but should get 4 or more portions

At 19p the Honeydew melons are definitely worth a try. I opened one up and although not the juiciest I've had, not bad at all. Fruit flies can't attack the hard skin of these unlike the Galia melons. Another problem looming rapidly for farmfoods are the Fyffes pineapples which are rapidly over-ripening (at least in the Ponders End branch visited yesterday).......................

I thought that the Class 1 designation and subsequent price hike was supposed to infer quality, i.e. also involving size and ripeness. Or is the Class 1 designation just another con? ................................

I think a majority of ( Super ) Markets i use that name in brackets pick a lot of their fruit far to early. They then package it and wack a " Ripen at Home " sticker on it. This cuts down on the cost of them storing it,but we end up having to buy fruit we 1. Cant eat when we want a piece and 2. a lot of people wont know how to ripen off fruit at home. So it will end up thrown away. How many times do you see in the reduced section fruit with that sticker on ?,it's got a Best Date on it but still rock hard. From my limited experience the fruit seems to rot from the inside out and by the time it's soft on the outside it's rotten inside. Our local Tesco when through a period of months back last year selling Banana's that were still dark green, i would'nt be surprised if some young child said " Mummy why are those Green and not Yellow". So another ( Super ) Market con..Ripen at Home.
