As I have had to return my OEX lightweight coat due to quality issues I was on the lookout for another coat.

When I saw Random1234 had posted a deal on a Montane Icarus synthetic filled coat I thought I'd have a look to see if there was a down version also on sale.

I bought a red/steel version which hopefully will last longer than the OEX one I bought last December and I'm glad to see they use ethically sourced down and YKK Zips.

Great review here which made me decide to buy one.

I've had the jacket in this video since around 2019 and really do recommend it. Mines got the odd scuff now where a thorn has caught it, so I had to sew it up. I use it all year as it's lightweight, packs down well due to the down feathers, warm and an excellent at keeping the wind off your body.

It does suck in the rain though but then that's always been a known issue for items with down.

Also consider the MT100 jacket at Decathlon. £60, lighter, 800 fill down.

Looks like a great coat for £60 (& better than the Go Outdoors decathlon OEX which is twice the price) but only the non hooded Chocolate truffle flavour is in all sizes (£54 bargain) decathlon.co.uk/p/m…fle

Unfortunately all but the 3XL in green and yellow 'hooded' is available: decathlon.co.uk/p/m…ard

£88 doesn't really exist I am afraid. Click on the colours and sizes and you will see what I mean.

Great price. Got this jacket last year. Superb jacket. Lightweight and stuffs down really small. Great warmth to weight ratio. Plus, Montane are a proper outdoor company. Highly recommend it.

I have an old one of these and it's probably the best item I own. It's so good in cold and wind.

I'm a medium in all my coats so ordered the same size but I just re-watched the video i posted and he's a similar frame to me (6.1 80kg regular size) and he's saying a large is a close fit

Unfortunately it's too late to change sizes but am I likely to be too big for a medium?

In general, I find Montane jackets a little smaller than other makes like Rab or Arcteryx. I have a longer than average back as well so I tend to size up when buying Montane jackets. You might be ok though.

Amazon is full of fake reviews for Montane, so take any review with a pinch of salt

you should have just have left out "for montane" from your statement, then it would have been more accurate.

I received mine today and although I would've liked an extra inch or so on the length...oooo errr ...the fit is really good. I was also right to get a medium, as a large - or XL as their size checker stated - would've been too baggy as I prefer a close fit. Also the red isn't as garish as it looks on the pictures but when you see the blandness of most apparel you understand why people don't like it.

Glad to hear that the medium has worked out for you.
