Meet The Nest Learning Thermostat

The Nest Learning Thermostat is a programmer, thermostat and frostat in one. It learns your schedule to programme itself, turns down the heat when you're away, and can be controlled from your mobile phone. It shows you how much heat you've used over the last 10 days, and sends an Energy Report every month to help you track and manage your energy use.

It's Time To Rethink Your Heating System

Heating makes up over 60% of your energy bill--about £1,350 a year*--but heating controls have scarcely changed in decades.

It's a broken system. So we're reinventing it.

Change The Temperature From Anywhere

Just connect the Nest Learning Thermostat to your home WiFi to control it from a mobile, tablet or laptop. Change the temperature, view and adjust your schedule or settings and see when the heat has been coming on and why.

The Nest Learning Thermostat is secure, private and reliable. Its security features include HTTPS, SSL and 128-bit encryption.

Programmes Itself--Saves Energy

The Nest Thermostat learns from you--your temperature adjustments, your home, your schedule. Teach it well to stay comfortable at home and save energy when you're away.

Auto-Schedule

Just turn it up and down. Nest learns the temperatures you like and creates a personalised schedule for your home. Unlike a rigid programmer schedule, Nest automatically adapts to your changing life.

Auto-Away

Don’t heat an empty home. The Nest Thermostat senses when there’s no one in the house and automatically turns down the heat.

Remote Control

Change the temperature from your mobile, tablet or laptop. You can also adjust your schedule and check your 10 day Energy History.

The Nest Leaf

Look for the leaf every time you change the temperature. It appears whenever you’re saving energy

Energy History

See when the heat was on and why, so you can track your energy use. The more you know, the more you can save.

True Radiant

No more guessing when to turn on the heat. Nest learns when to turn things on so it's just how you like it, when you like it.

At Home in Your Home

The Nest Learning Thermostat works with most heating systems, including:

• Combi and condensing boilers

• System and heat only boilers

• Hydronic underfloor systems

• Air source and ground source heat pumps (heating only)

• Zoned systems (one Nest Thermostat per zone)

• Switched live systems

• Low-voltage (dry contact) systems

Silly question I know, but I'm going to ask it anyway...

If you ever wanted to turn off the smart features and use it as a basic thermostat at any point, could you?
    hdhinsa's avatar
    hdhinsa
You can turn most AI features off. But you wouldn't want to, as they save energy and are what make it function better than a traditional thermostat.

I've always had a good experience with this model. It's never let me down until recently when the battery started to fail. This powers the wifi chip so you can access via the app. The unit does charge the battery but it will only last an hour or so and the unit will stop talking to the router. I've ordered a new battery for 5 quid off ebay and from what ifixit says it's very easy to replace. Overall would recommend.

Speaking on my own experience, brand new full install and I wish I’d never gone with Nest. They have driven us mad and still are 3yrs later. I’ve been to hell and back and wish I’d just got a normal thermostat. When they work they are fine, but the random behaviour is the killer, god knows how much it has cost too in wasted energy.

Had ours 6 years now and have to admit under its own app it is troublesome turning on at stupid times in the morning. We set ours up a couple of years ago connected to Amazon Alexa and have to say no random issues at all since

Not sure whether this is down to not having much of an idea of how this functions however determine a setpoint and hours later it's adjusted itself and raised the setpoint. Literally drove me to the point of distraction, disconnected for this very reason. At a guess this is down to fuzzy logic however I just do not understand why it's not possible for this to leave the setpoint well alone and just switch the heating on and off so many degrees either side of the setpoint (without adjusting it). Feel like it's a constant battle putting the setpoint back to what was set. Should anyone know how to switch this very frustrating feature off this would be much appreciated. Cannot recommend this product. (edited)

There isn’t such a thing as dump question my friend.

It will work with any boiler.

I have two: my new modern boiler and old standard at my parents (both Vaillant)

The way it works is extremely simple: when thermostat register low temperature it turns on boiler - when temperature in room is high enough or switches off boiler.

Of course you decided how warm you want at home.

Electrician who did this for me was surprised that this is so simple (edited)

Got one of these with a 23 year old system boiler. Works ace and will save us money over time. Easy to turn on heating/hot water when out or in bed. Turn off all the auto scheduling and auto presence as it doesn't work well. Also recommend getting a Nest pro to install it rather than trying yourself.

Nest will be good if your boiler supports OpenTherm (not sure if nest 2nd gen does?).

You may be better off with an outdoor temperature sensor that is compatible with your current thermostat. it will allow the boiler to modulate properly (rather than on/of) and may save more money than a nest.

My parents have a Glow worm boiler, which doesn't support OpenTherm; so the £55 sensor was a much better option.
    Dmitry_77's avatar
    Dmitry_77
Why would you need a sensor? It connects to the internet and get reasonably good readings through there. Temperature is reasonably close and also wind, which outdoor sensor won't provide

If it's the bottom bit you're referring to, they all have that line, it's where the sensors are housed. It's soft plastic as well, so avoid touching that area in case you scratch it.

was the 2nd generation the best one that they did? the rest were all plastic designs?
  39. Shaunyf's avatar

Avoid. These are so old the battery doesn’t charge sufficiently enough to be able to use network/ WIFI settings. This makes it as useful as a mechanical dial.. Also, the gen 2 person sensor doesn’t work. Looks like an old stock offload and resell. Gen 3 is worth the extra.
