You don't It is the black and brown on the 230v section towards the bottom. You should have a timer though which comes off that to the timer and then from the timer to the stat?

You need an electrician.

I have mine delivered today. Already started planning and took pictures of my current cabling. This is my boiler - Vaillant turbomax 824E (pic1) This in the controller on the wall (pic2) Thing I am not clear about is do I need any additional wires? How do I connect wires from the boiler to heat link pic1? Which wires in the current controller (pic1) control the current thermostat pic2?

Might be worth posting that as a separate discussion in discussion area. Explain how it works including any personal experience. Never come across it before and it might interest some people

Had the nest installed in the last month or so and generally pretty happy with it... it takes a bit of time to refine the algorithm but it's now begun to be a lot more reliable and predictable. Also worst case just turn it on with your mobile - that was the main draw for me in any case. I paid £189.99 from screwfix when these were generally goig for £200+ incl stand so at this price bit of a no brainer for me. Just double check you get the right one for your boiler as apparently theres a combi boiler one and a tank version

Steve4321

My thermostat receiver failed (Cheap "Celect" brand where I cannot even find the manual onliine) yesterday and in a blind panic I ordered this Honeywell one for £110.99 - Link to Honeywell Which is the better product as I can always return and order the Nest?

Would have a gas engineer install affect my warranty on my boiler? Pretty sure my Worcester bosch 25i installed late late 2017 still has quite a few years warranty left.

If you have a boiler that supports OpenTherm, then you should probably stick with Nest. Hive does not support it. trustedreviews.com/news/opentherm-may-not-get-energy-savings-deserve-3633334

Yeh you'll need two if you have a zoned system. I.e if you can have downstairs heating on and upstairs off or at a different temperature.

Speedbirdjw

I had the same and options were: have a nest for each zone (bit expensive for the amount we have heating on upstairs) have one nest controlling both zones combined (I don’t like it warm upstairs for sleeping but like it warmer downstairs) opted to just have the nest downstairs and the heating turned off upstairs on original thermostat. That way the main living areas are warm at the times of day we want, heat transfers to upstairs but it stays cool for the evening when we go to bed.

Yossi

No, I have a second nest. My plumbing does not allow for it. Hence, it is sitting around waiting to be sold.

Just get a 2nd nest for the second zone. That’s what I’ve done. My first nest has been running both zones for the past couple of years, time to split them.

I got that deal (2018), but didn't realise I couldn't use 2 zone heating. Still got the stand and thermostat sealed up. Meaning to put on eBay. Happy to sell both for 149+ actual postage.

In my view there are only disadvantages with Nest. The Thermostat is USB powered which means it needs to remain plugged in, not a big deal if you buy the stand (it's never truly mobile if it needs plugging in) but if you want it mounted on a wall it's a pain to get power cable to be invisible, Hive on the other hand just has 2 x AA batteries and can be mounted anywhere or on the stand, hive is truly mobile as it does not need plugging in. The second pain is the learning, fine if you have a regular schedule but anything out of the ordinary or having a holiday, guests stay and it starts to learn a new schedule. The learning is a total pain and fortunately can be turned off which would be the first thing I would do.

Yes it takes about 2 weeks to get used to your routine but I ended up turning all that off and just setting the times I want it on and off. I didn’t change boiler or gas supplier and my bills dropped around £15 after 3 months meter reading. Even with summer winter etc they still work out the 12 months average usage. Your new boiler will be what stops you working it out, you won’t know if the boiler is saving you which it will if the one it replaced was very old anyway or the thermostat

DildoBagginz

I only installed it around April so my savings to date are all bias with the season. That and i changed my boiler at the same time so im not sure if i could identify any savings directly for it. Thats an encouraging figure though! When it was 'learning' my house it used to put the heating on for fun. Although I put this down to operator error.

crazy_b

£40 you can get them for if it’s a straight swap. Go down the list in the app of installers . Some will be as high as £80, keep trying I found one for £40.

crazy_b

My gas bill dropped £15 a month , has yours not gone down? Mine has already covered the cost of the nest and install. Maybe you have a faulty one, mine got changed as the tracking didn’t work properly . Was a nest issue not my phones.

Turn the dial on the thermostat. You only need wifi to control it from your phone.

paulj48

It’s not a good idea to move a thermostat from room to room, most modern thermostats have some form of hysteresis built in (Nest included). Regarding installation, it depends on if you need to remove your boiler cover to access any wiring terminals, if your boiler has a room sealed cover this is classed as part of the flue system so you’ll need a Gas safe engineer to perform the 26.9 gas tests after refitting.

paulj48

Not necessarily true, it depends on your existing heating system and controls. Combi, S plan, Y plan etc. Also depends if your existing boiler has Opentherm connections as the Nest V3 can also act as an Opentherm controller whereas the ‘E’ can’t.

astramondeo

Are they easy to DIY install. My combi system has a remote temperature/timer unit which I can move from room to room - next to boiler is a small box which I presume is control unit for room control

Thanks for the reply. I paid around £250 for the nest and installation direct from Nest a couple of years ago. The guy who installed it wouldn't touch the control unit and wired the Nest controller unit in the airing cupboard. Everything has worked fine but the control unit is old and serves no purpose. There is nothing on the Nest site about this and google is great at showing me control units to buy. I will look for someone local.

WattoT

Unfortunately not mate. I’d get a nest pro in to wire it for you as they know the system better than most electricians. Sorry I can’t be more help but it’s definitely not a simple job.

jjBlinky

I had mine installed. The installer wouldn't touch the existing control unit, so I have to leave that on with both heating and water set to 'on'. Is it simple to replace the existing control unit? Can I just join the wires up?

WattoT

I’d get a professional in mate, the thermostat is the easy part, the actual heat link has lots of wires which can be confusing.... but it should be compatible with your system.

I think I found the culprit. The auto-learning schedule had added 10deg to my schedule when the eco mode had been set at the default of 10. Since I adjusted the eco mode up to 16, it didn't remove the 10 degrees settings in my schedule!

andrewt1

Sounds like your timed schedule has the 10 degrees set up in it. So it could be jumping out of Eco mode (if you walk past it, or maybe your phone location makes it think you are home) and using the pre-set temp instead of Eco temp. Might sound crazy but yes, they allow scenarios like this where Eco mode actually puts your temp setting UP!!

asjsingh

Not sure why yours isn't working, have 3 nests in family houses and all have eco set to 16 and works beautifully.

Sc4mp0

I feel if you have to answer a statement like the above then you're wasting your time.

3LeggedDog

I do have the eco set at 16.5 deg and it still lowers to 10 when I am not looking! Don't want go disable the eco because that defeats the purpose of it knowing when I am home or not!

I figured as much, but it could be more clear on the paper sleeve that covers the stat base.

cool_josh

You can change the wires at the heatlink end to the 12v connections making it safe for the nest.

Lakesman

Well, mine came today, but there is a problem! A big effing problem! How in the hell am I supposed to power the thermostat? All the unboxing videos, show a white 3-pin power adapter and white USB cable. Mine has none of these! BUT, it states on the NEST back-plate that connecting to 240v will irreparably damage the NEST. Guess what? My current thermostat wires are 240v at the moment whilst part of the existing system. So, do these change to 12v once the 'NEST Heatlink' is connected? If not, where am I supposed to get power for the nest?

Lakesman

Someone should expire this. It was a really good deal though. I bought the Nest on the £150 with stand from Screwfix, but now have been quoted £130 +vat for installation!

silverbullet7671

Not quite, I had to rewire the internals of my boiler as the old thermostat had a different layout. And my ham fistedness broke the heatlink, I explained my predicament and held my hands up to being too heavy handed and credit to nest, they sent out a free replacement. Got it working in the end, but be aware, some boilers may require additional wiring, my Worcester Bosch 24i did.

I had a gas engineer install ours for £60. I could have done it but it meant removing the boiler cover which I'm not qualified to do. £140+vat is mental.
