Just a heads up! All carphone warehouse handsets are unlocked as standard, even when brought with a sim...well they where when I worked in the trade, I have had several handsets from them and this has been the case. They generally just give you an unlocked phone with a SIM card from the carrier you choose. If the phone was locked to a network in my experience the phone box is marked with the carrier...this is not the case on CPW handsets. Obviously times change but they used to sell the phone for £50 more hopping now one new this and just gave you the same boxed phone they would as if you chose a carrier...sorry for babbling hope this helps some one

I would get that above this one and it is only £129 at O2, got an unlock code from ebay for 4.45 and no turning back, Seriously anyone who is debating getting a windows8 phone go for it, they are much easier to use than an android and the android is easy to use.I was going to get her the 620 but wanted the bigger screen which this one has i believe.

Why would someone spend more for an Huawei????!!!!!

Windows8 blows android and ios out of the water, if you think ios is better than android you need to go have a drink and then comeback here and read the following word..."NO"

The only problem with Windows8 is the amount of apps, but as people realise how good it really is i expect the amount of apps to surpass Apple first then Android , yes it is that good.

The problem with discussions like this is that people are biased, they can't have an objective opinion. I have owned a WP7 device and used WP8, I think it's a great little OS, I say little because it's simply just not mature enough yet for my needs. Android in many ways is rough, but it has enormous power, there is no other mobile OS like Android which has the app support and customisation options. IOS and WP7/8 suit some people and I see merits and demerits in all of these operating systems, none are perfect and none of them can be. I work for a company that sells mobile devices and if I was biased I would be doing my customers a disservice. WP8 might blow away Android in some respects, but I assure you that Android can blow away WP8 with the functionality it has. Android is the most functional of all of the mobile operating systems as a whole, but it's certainly not for everyone, just as WP8 and IOS aren't either.

I currently have a Nexus 4 with 317 apps installed. Is the Nexus 4 and Android what I should be recommending to everyone because it does almost everything I need? No because different people have different needs.

I'd like to plug them into the phone, to be able to use recording software and synth apps and guitar amp/effect pedal- which need to have midi in and out support so that I can use them on stage, in a live setting. On that note- what apps would you recommend? I know Windows8 has less apps than iOS and Android in general, but surely it being superior and it's quality over quantity, it should have some decent synthesiser apps and guitar amp simulation/effect pedal apps and a digital mixing/multi-track recording apps. I assume that Windows8 is capable of doing all that. Well as the expert I'm sure you'll let me know if it isn't

Just because YOU cannot use it for what YOU want it for (which seems like a pretty rare specification) does not mean it is not the better OS.

I'd just like to add before I get flamed, that as a WP user I do not think it is the best, or worst, mobile OS. I have my opinions either way.

The information about the screen on this being IPS is wrong. The screen on the 720 is IPS. The 520 is a bog standard lcd tft display.

The 520 also does not have the clearblack layer that the 620 has, making colours less vibrant, and a worse performer in the sun.

The screen on the 620 is better quality, although slightly smaller.

Some apps like Nokia HERE city lens also wont be fully compatible with the 520 as its missing some positioning hardware.

NFC is missing too, along with the camera flash and front facing.

I'd wait till it hits £70-80. For now, the 620 is better value.

In fact it is you who are horribly wrong my friend, 99% of CPW Handsets are unlocked and the prices vary between networks when buying on PAYG because the networks all offer different rates of subsidiary, The SIM Free price has no subsidiary and therefore reflects the true cost of the handset! in other words you buy at a price CPW actually make a bit of money from selling it over its cost price. CPW did about a year ago sell a number of locked three handsets cheaper than all the other networks did, these were all locked to three as they were so cheap three didnt want people buying and using on other networks. Hence they provided locked stock for these deals, All were samsung handsets at the time and stock has all sold through on these now anyway. People are correct about iphones they lock to the first network sim entered.

    Unfortunately, you are horribly wrong.

Only phones which are locked to 3 are the locked ones, ALL other phones are unlocked.

The subsidy is from the network who give a benefit to PAYG who have been with them for at least 6 months to buy a phone without having to top up and getting it at a reduced price. HOWEVER bare in mind now the policy has changed. It used to be a universal price for a PAYG upgrade but now its dependent on which network you are upgrading as they all are now pricing their upgrade prices at different amounts. Thus, the £89.95 upgrade price MAY only be if you upgrade with a particular network. Generally in my experience o2 tend to subsidise the handset the most so this would probably be with an o2 PAYG upgrade. You could find all other networks have it at the same price but it's no longer the norm now and the likes of Vodafone especially have priced up their PAYG upgrade handset prices.

Just a heads up for you guys who are looking to buy this on a PAYG upgrade - don't assume now necessarily you're definitely going to get it for £89.95 - it's network dependent.

I can confirm these phones have arrived in stores today and it dosent.matter what network.you want there all generic handsets(unlocked)How do i know this i work for cpw and have tried one today. Not very popular with consumers overall but worth the asking price.Bring in any pay an go sim that hasnt been used to upgrade in the last 6 months and job done.Itll be cheaper but failing that buy it with a top up on the cheapest network and put your own sim in no unlocking to do.

dont listen to this, an iPhone will lock to the first network sim … dont listen to this, an iPhone will lock to the first network sim inserted AND WILL STAY THAT WAY even if you restore it. Restoring just restores the software, not the carrier lock configuration so please don't buy an iPhone thinking you can just restore it and change network sims.

I genuinely don't understand what's going on here. I bought my iPhone 5 unlocked. Stuck a 3 sim in it and had poor reception at home and at work, so switched to I giffgaff. If someone wants to send me a nano sim on another network, i'll make a video proving it!

    [quote=Copperface]Advice please - 520 or 620?
Really feel I should move into the smartphone age from my Nokia 1100 (which still works brilliantly and is indestructible).
I am not loyal to any OS although I prefer to avoid Apple.
I am not advanced in tweaking etc so just want a system that works fluidly and effectively.
I quite fancy one of these but unsure what to choose between a 620 or a 520.
I would not use it really for multimedia or games as I have a tablet for that so screen size is relatively unimportant.
What really interests me in the GPS/Satnav/mapping thing that Nokia do, as I would want it to replace my ageing and probably obsolete satnav.
I need it to work abroad in Australia, Uk and Europe (including/especially the satnav) and would probably want to tether it to my tablet. Not a big caller (100 mins would be enough) or texter but would like to use dat (probably around a Gig)
Probably need it unlocked so could put a foreign SIM in for use in Aus.
NFC not necessary but never used it so not sure if I would in the next few years or not.
Main thing is the mapping/GPS thing - is there any difference between the two.
Incidentally in went into CPW today and the said the 520 was not out yet, and the 620 they had was priced at £199.99.
Any WP8 phone experts able to advise?

The price that CPW quoted you for the 620 is the offline price. Tell them you want it on PAYG instead, pay the £10 credit for the SIM card (you don't have to use it) and you will get exactly the same phone for £129 + the £10 for the SIM.
I purchased the 520 yesterday, purely to try out Window8 mobile, from CPW. They didn't receive their stock until the afternoon. I asked for the phone and the assistant scanned it before I had chance to say I wanted it on PAYG and told me it was £149.00 I told him I would take it on PAYG to bring the price down, he rescanned it, told me I would have to pay £10 for the SIM the total being £109.00 As for the 620 or 520 the choice is yours. I nearly purchased the 620 last week but as I only want to test out the OS I waited for the 520 instead. The main differences are that the 520 has no NFC chip, front facing camera or gyroscope, none of which really bothers me. So far I'm extremely impressed with the 520 and I think you will be happy with either phone you choose. They really are amazing value for money.
  37. deleted517298's avatar
I purchased mine at a CPW store and they gave me a normal SIM. Luckily I remembered to check before I left the store and returned to the counter and told the assistant that it should be a micro SIM. He replied that it took a normal SIM and the system would have flagged it up if it should take a micro SIM. Eventually he reluctantly agreed to check the phone and after he took about 3mins trying to get the back of the phone off (it's actually really simple and easy to remove) he had a look and went "see its... Oh it is a micro SIM. Well the system should have flagged it up"

So there you go, it's apparently CPW 'system' that's at fault for not flagging it up.

Just read up on My Commute, and Nokia are working on transferring it into "Here Drive" along with traffic updates. They obviously decided to release the beta version of Drive before the other add on's were available. So Commute and traffic updates will be coming........eventually.I have downloaded maps for Portugal and Spain to Here Drive as well as the UK, so not sure what your problem is there? Open Here Drive Beta/Settings/Manage Maps/Add/Choose Continent, then select which country you want to add.Hope this helps.

Just to clarify, the Lumia phones continue to offer free downloads for offline maps across the world, but voice-guided satnav is now only available for the territory in which the phone is purchased (in this case, the UK). The latter limitation was one which older Symbian handsets (e.g. the Nokia 5800) did not have, so that might cause some confusion.
