Good price. However, make sure the firmware is updated as soon as you install. High failure rates on the 2TB version and the 1TB is also affected but, to a lesser extent. tomshardware.com/new…ate

This deal is for the non-PRO model, but it's still worth updating. (edited)

Note this is the DRAM-less 980. Still a decent drive in real world performance and probably this is lowest price ever.

It is DRAMless but uses Host Memory Buffer (HMB) a small part of your RAM for drive mapping which makes it faster and less of an issue for wear than a purely DRAMless SSD.

Probably not quite as good as having DRAM but not as bad as pure DRAMless. A midway point.

This particular drive is very well reviewed and is a very good PCIe 3 drive for the price.

How does this compare to a crucial mx500 sata drive?
    spannerzone's avatar
While this is far faster, in reality the noticable difference between a good sata SSD like the MX500 and an nvme like this is probably not that much in day to day use. For hard core users and those that run benchmarks all day then nvme is the winner but I am doubtful it's worth the expense unless you're upgrading for more space. It is a great price though!

Wow excellent price - it's PCi-3 so not for PS5 but for the rest of us, it's an excellent deal.

This is non-Pro though.so without the all important DRAM unfortunately.and not that exciting.

    keep in mind :
980 is the budget model without DRAM.
980 Pro is the proper one with DRAM cache.

And the Pro is PCIe-4 so really a different beast entirely.

I put a 2tb version in external case, and the Samsung software won't let me update the firmware.. Any ideas how to update it ?

    Direct connection

Will this go into steam deck
    Czubaka's avatar
No, you need nvme in 2230 size.

Will this ideal to back up my files and movies?
    xenny's avatar
No. This is an internal drive. For a backup you want something you can easily disconnect and ideally keep some way away from the system it contains a back up of.

    Yes, and no.
The Samsung has faster sequential speeds (only good for large file transfers).
    The Kioxia has DRAM cache.

In real life daily use, you'd struggle to tell the difference.
The Samsung has a longer warranty though.

Personally, I'd go with the Kioxia. (edited)
