Just to add, Smarty are one of very few (the only?) network to offer an add-on for unlimited data abroad. It’s ‘only’ 4G when roaming but for £7 for 3 days of unlimited EU roaming, I think it’s a good deal. None of the others offer unlimited roaming even as an option AFAIK (happy to be corrected!)

Be careful this plan don’t offer 5G only 4G and 3G you can see that when you open the plan.

Don't suppose anyone is able to share their experience on Smarty? We have good Three signal here and 5G is excellent but I understand Smarty is an MVNO so unsure how they compare when it comes to network throughput/traffic shaping etc. (edited)

Can't comment regards 5G signals with them as we don't get it here but on 4G, I get the exact same speeds on my mobile router as I did with 3. 3 actually own Smarty. (edited)

FYI this deal is identical on TCB as well, £25 cashback £16/month unlimited

I think I will go for something cheaper, they have a deal as low as £5/month for 4gb data and £7/month for 8gb which have some small cashback as well

Reason being I just got a text from virgin media saying prices are going up 17.3%!

No. You need to buy an addon from Smarty.

The fact this runs on the 3 network is a deal breaker for me as in this area 3 is far far the worst mobile signal, I have to walk half a mile to get one bar & I'm not in the countryside I'm in a small town.

If paying £20 now will they drop the price if asked ?

Doubt it as it is a Quidco exclusive but you can always ask Smarty on live chat.

Has anyone using smarty been able to set up a home webserver using that connection? I made a half attempt but couldn’t get it to work and just kept to a free hosting service.

Three directly is likely your only mobile option. CGNAT is used on all other networks in the UK including Smarty. Which I suspect would be an obstacle that would be difficult to deal with given the shared IP address and strict policies in force.

This is an excellent service in London, I usually get around 200-800Mbps and sometimes over 1Gbps. They also removed the ‘fair use’ cap a while ago so it’s truly unlimited. (edited)

Left smarty because I never had good signal, it would be almost unusable when everyone around me was fine think I heard they use the same network as 3 but regardless it was making my phone into a paperweight.

No point having a cheap unlimited data sim with no access to data.

Suppose with Smarty having a one month rolling contract, meant you only had to pay for 1 month before you left.

Have smarty ever actually raised there prices ? e.g is it £16 a month but used to be £12 so if you sign up at £16 could it cost £20 at a random increase as it’s a monthly contract?

They haven’t increased their own plans no. But these affiliate deals generally expire after 12 months. So it may be £16 for unlimited but after a year you go to the full price of £20.

Damn, only £1 less than ID network which also run on the Three network. The Great thing is with the 30 day rolling contacts you can switch between them and try out (although chances are an mvno will be just as good as the next on the same network)

Does this start once you activate the sim? Say my contract is ending in a month. Can i buy this now and then activate it after a month?

Portable or home use? 4G or 5G? CeX is usually the way to go if you don’t mind secondhand. Prices are good and you get a 2yr warranty on anything you buy there. So that’s probably what I’ll link you to depending on your answer.

Using a phone IMO is better option than a very expensive 5G router, but best if it has USB 3 and Wi-Fi 6 and if you have a Wi-Fi access point with usb (or use a USB Ethernet adapter from phone to Access Point).

I found a good basic set up is a phone tethered via USB to one of these GL.iNet mini routers which only cost £30. It’s only Wi-Fi N, but the range is fantastic - best I’ve seen in any router or extender. I got a full signal through 3ft thick stone walls of an old church where no other router or extender would get any signal or only very very weak. It’s also low power - I ran one off a power bank for a whole day in extender mode. Make sure you get a good data cable, not a power only cable.  It uses OpenWrt and has a lot of features that you usually only get in high end routers, but is also very easy to use and get started with. There are higher end models with Wi-Fi 6 2.5 gigabit etc, but those are a bit more expensive - £95-£100. It’s then a very portable set up with great range and features.  You also get to be able to use unlimited mins on the phone which you don’t if sim is in a 4G or 5G router.
