Hands-on Video Review:

What is 5G Home Broadband?

5G Broadband is for serious screen lovers. Faster speeds for heavier streaming. Lower lag for near pro-gaming. And increased capacity for multiple users. It’s great news for busy homes with lots of screen time going on. Discover 5G with us.

Will 5G replace Home Broadband?

It’s going to be a game changer. When you get a 5G hub, you just plug in and you’ll get incredible speeds that’ll give traditional fibre and cable providers a run for their money. While others wait for appointments, engineers and fiddle with cables, you’ll be streaming 4K in one room, while your mates game in another, while you're streaming your favourite tunes, uploading selfies and ordering take out.

Can I get Unlimited data on a Home Broadband deal?

Home Broadband deals from Three are different – you don’t need a landline or fibre optic cable to get connected. Our wireless Broadband uses our signal network. All you need is a plug socket and a 4G or 5G signal. Then just follow the instructions to set up your hub and you're good to go.

You can use your hub anywhere you can get a 4G or 5G signal, upstairs, downstairs, even outside in the shed. All you have to do is plug it in.

Does Three Home Broadband need to be installed?

There's no installation when you choose a Home Broadband deal for your home. You only have to plug your wireless Broadband hub in and follow the instructions in our user guide. Speeds can vary depending on where you use your hub, but our user guide will help you get the best speeds in any location. We also offer next working day delivery too, so you can get connected as soon as possible.

Is there a home broadband setup fee, or any other fees to pay?

There’s no set up fee to pay when you sign up to one of our home wireless Broadband plans. If you choose a 24 month plan, there’s only your Pay Monthly charge to pay. If you choose a rolling monthly plan, you’ll be asked to pay a one-off upfront fee as part of your first bill.

Just a reminder that if you’re on our 5G service the broadband hub remains the property of Three Broadband. It will need to be returned when your contract ends to avoid any additional charges being made to your account.

I took on an offer a while back from Three for one of these routers - the net service seemed unreliable as I enjoy online gaming.
The bigger problem was when I went to cancel - they sent me notifications even after I confirmed returned device. I realised one of the letters that came through was actually an extremely well hidden scam - they had all my correct details, but had a weird number to call them on to pay for not returning device. Why is that a big deal? Because it means their data is getting leaked internally to scammers. Huge red flag. I advise all my friends and family to avoid Three because of this. If you do take it on, just be wary and always call/contact them on official numbers if needed.

The router has a better internal antenna (plus two ports to attach an external antenna); it may support higher speeds than your phone's modem; it has Ethernet ports so you can wire it in to your home network and connect faster than most WiFi; it has a rudimentary firewall; it is plugged into the wall power; and you can leave it on at home all day, which you may not be able to do with your phone.

I have a program that tests and logs the speed every four hours; I get consistently around 700Mbps on average and occasionally it gets to 900Mbps. That's a pretty good deal for £21 a month. (edited)

Watch the video above in post, it clearly says you cannot set ports and even if you could it wouldn't matter as you still don't have a fixed IP. Even if the router allows port opening without a fixed IP it wouldn't matter. This is a limit of 5g from 3.

Unfortunately you won’t be able to. These devices come with the option to enter the unlock code 3 times. After that the device is locked to the network and Three send them out with all of the unlock codes used so basically stuck on Three

Sorry about caps but with no fixed IP address you cannot do things like port forwarding. A lot of big games on console and PC use unique ports so you will get terrible speed with this or not even be able to connect to games at all. Most people don't realise this is happening as most routers do this automatically through pnp (plug and play). If you only need for working from home and internet browsing however this is a decent deal. Can still get better speeds for less but this is a more convenient option.

Potentially not being able to work because someone else downloaded some big xbox/steam games or similar isn't acceptable for a product advertised as unlimited IMO.

That's incredible unlikely to happen though. If you get near the top end of the speed i.e. 200mbs, you would need to download for 11 hours straight to hit 1tb downloaded.
The biggest games out there are about 100gb now so you'd have to be actively trying to hit that 1 tb limit to get to it in 24 hours.

You realise most ISPs are dynamic IPs right? Having fixed IPs is not needed at all it doesnt make any difference for gaming, if you need to forward ports then you forward the ports on your INTERNAL IP, you can fix IPs against a mac address this is basic router options....

Your post is vastly wrong and you should probably stop spreading this false information, "gaming ports" dont make much difference unless the router itself is broke in some way or you have turned on QoS which for most low - mid range routers shouldnt be used as they are too slow to process but you can turn it off.

Nothing to do with the deal but couldnt let this information be left uncorrected sorry.

AVOID Three like the plague. I took up their offer for 5G with a free TV over 3 months ago.

The free TV was supposed to be delivered within a few weeks of my first bill, but there is still no sign of it.

And the speeds and reliability is TERRIBLE. I get a signal half the time, and the other half the time it just drops.

Just be aware when 5g does come to your area the speed you receive is variable.
    On 4g I get a 90mb connection (iPhone 11)
On 5g I get 223mb (iPhone 13 pro) but a few miles down the road this drops to around 80mb.

I live in an area with only asdl no fibre and three broadband had been my savour.

I have had it for 3 years now no problems, the 4g router not 5g as it's not in my area.

Always had good speeds and I can only think of two or three times over the years I had a slow connection when the weather was very bad. No internet connection can be truly 100% reliable. Three give you bang for your buck, heat. 46259672-lYpLc.jpg

I had their 5g home broadband a few months ago but ended up cancelling and returning it. When it was connecting to 5g speeds were great, around 300mbps, sometimes speed tests were showing 500mbps download, but quite often it would switch to 4g and speeds would be crap. Upload speeds connect via 4g anyway so they were not that impressive.
Ended up going with a fibre broadband provider (community fibre) and have no regrets, get fast consistent download and upload at a great price.

Three's customer service was absolute garbage, the first guy tried to convince me that i was over the 14 days return policy which i wasn't, but i placed my order when they were offering 30 day returns even the email and letter stated this and i offered to send screenshots, so he transferred me to a higher up who was almost as bad in that he said he can cancel the contract but i would be charged for the first month and then tried to sell it like it was a good deal on that i wouldn't be charged for 24 months. Eventually i accepted.

When i eventually got the final bill it mentioned a credit as part of Three's no fee policy and then some time later i got a refund so the customer service reps were talking nonsense and were causing unnecessary stress. Definitely not going back to them again after that.

If you do get this I'd recommend running as many speed tests as you can and check how often you're connected to 5g as opposed to 4g and if you find speeds aren't what they're advertised as return it quickly. Fibre beats this easily, don't be fooled by the crazy high speeds that SOME people get, do you need those crazy speeds that you might get sometimes or do you need a consistently fast and reliable connection with fast up and down? If it's the latter then go with fibre. (edited)

Don't get this. Three are terrible. Speeds are awful. I want their terrible network and awful speeds all to myself. Go with Vodafone or EE or something.

Ordered mine on Tuesday after 10pm. It states on the website if you order before 8pm it will arrive the next day so I knew mine wouldn't arrive the next day as 8pm had already gone. Mine arrived this morning at 11am. I'm getting 500mbps+ and have spent most the day experimenting with different spots in the house factoring in signal to the Three mast and wifi signal strength to my electronics.

I am over the moon with it thus far. Thanks very much OP. When I entered my postcode I was only able to see 4G and 4G+ deals. Using your link directly allowed me to order the 5G contract. I took the risk and was happy to pay the extra £4 per month even if I only got 4G. I figured within at least six months I should have 5G so I am very happy that it's picking up 5G. I checked the coverage map before hand and it suggests I can get 5G outside but not inside. However the antenna is so good on these that I am getting 5G everywhere in my house. Worst spots I was getting 3 bars but most of the house I am getting 4 bars. If I put it on the window sill in my master bedroom I get 5 bars and 570mbps is my fastest result so far.

I normally need internet for browsing, Teams meeting from work and streaming Netflix on tele.

Not talking from experience here just the fundamentals. If you are like me and can only get a maximum fibre speed of around 50-60mbit then 5g is a great option, you will get 100-300mbit, and most areas will get 5g rollout before they get full fibre rollout because BT etc are so slow.
However ping will be a massive issue for gaming, I have seen people suggest they still get low pings well under 100ms on 5g, but I suspect you will feel the difference if you game online
If you don't game then it'll be a very suitable option, with other perks like being able to take it with you if you move which etc.
I suspect a lot of students and such will start taking 5g contracts over fibre as it avoids the contract issues.

i bought a ZTE MC801A 5G router from router-switch.com/5g-…tml last year - it came from the US but was delivered fairly quickly. I bought a Vodafone unlimited data sim deal with cash back redemption that worked out at just over £13 a month. Just put the sim in the router and it worked straight away if your happy to buy a router and sim separately. Obviously you own the device as its not rented. The reason i bought from router switch was there was very limited availability of 5G routers in the UK at the time - not sure if that's changed. (edited)

I cancelled my virgin broadband and just use my 5g unlimited data... The only issue is the ping/latency for competitive gaming is an issue. I get almost 200mbps from a 4g connection but my latency is between 50-60ms as opposed to my old 20-30ms virgin broadband connection. When playing Battlefield V it was more of an issue because they stopped running UK servers and only ran European servers in Germany which meant my ping was even worse, anywhere between 65-95ms.

Noted that it takes you to basket even if 5G not available in area.

    Few questions then:

    - no ISP is able to service the building with fibre so stuck on speeds of at most 10mb - very frustrating!

    - If no 5G coverage, would this then default back to 4G?

    - I don’t think my phone can do 5G ( iPhone XR) but presumably that wouldn’t be a problem for other connected devices (laptops etc?)

    - read all the comments, how suitable have people found this for gaming?

    - general Q - what do people recommend where fibre is unavailable? It’s incredibly frustrating. I’ve just upgraded to an Oled and my current broadband (lucky if i get 8 down!) really struggles with anything 4K or more than a few devices connected!

Thanks, wondering if this is worth a punt. Havjng this for every other device + my current sky line for with just gaming PC connected? :/ (edited)
