Right here is my update:

Ordered on Tuesday 28th June, delivered today (Wednesday 6th July). It is definetely a refurbished unit (I am not lucky enough to get a brand new as some have reported).

Downloaded TomTom Home from their website and conected the unit to the PC to check LMG, tried few times by going to 'Tools/Use Latest Map Gurantee' but kept saying LMG expired

As suggested by somebody in one of the earlier post, I then tried different approach by selecting 'Operate my GO' then clicked 'Set current location' at the bottom. When I tried LMG again after doing the above it let me update the map free of charge to v870.3406 from v840.2562

Those didn't manage to update the latest map = version 870.3406 after getting their GO 550 Refurbished.
Try this out. Took me and hour to figure it out.
Install TomTom Home Version 2.8 onto ur computer. Update ur tomtom 550 once it finished updating, go to TOOLS look for USE LATEST MAP GURANTEE, there you can find the latest map version 870.3406 and replace the V840.2562 for free. Hope this help

Ive always find it better to stick on the main route and wait than take a detour onto A-roads and queue for half a hour to get through a set of lights. Wouldnt dream of paying £8 a month for it.

Ive ditched my old hacked up 710 for the iphone app. Much better and less nickable.

I thought I got a good deal just under 3 weeks ago buying this for £114.99. I previously had a TomTom 520 and this is a significant upgrade. The Live traffic services and up to date petrol prices are excellent additions which could end up paying for the device in savings. I haven't experienced any of the lock ups or other issues which people mentioned, although I have had those problems with all the previous TomTom's I owned. Normally it is just a case of pressing the reset button. I would say build quality is not why I buy TomTom.

In my view, this is the best SatNav under £150 in the UK. It provides all the HD Live services that their newer devices offer and the screen is just as good. Buy it.

Update

After for sure being unable to get a map update I did the following...

Many times I went into TTHome and selected update my device.....then after that I selected operate my device (on screen) there was a bit down the bottom that asked to set location or something like that, I clicked on it.
Right after this it then said congratulations and that I was able to have a map update

Only problem I have now is that I downloaded the 870 map to my laptop hard drive and after that my TT has stayed on the connected to a pc screen and won't budge. It won't turn on properly or turn off

I tried poking it with a pin with no joy

I now await the battery going flat

They come from Holland where Tomtom are based. Mine was dispatched yesterday lunchtime, tracking says delivery will be tomorrow.

Mine arrived today, all good so far. Latest maps said expired until I logged into TomTom Home, linked the new device to my account and then it let me download them.

I had a problem originally trying to us the "operate my go" option saying my operating system wasn't supported. I had to get all the free updates to the TomTom device first, it then rebooted then I could use the operation function.

They said my order is on backorder and will be dispatched on 12th July. Checked my status at 9:25pm on 12th July and its still not dispatched. Thinking of cancelling the order now.

Did you have TT Home already installed from a previous TomTom. I could only get it to work by doing a completely clean install on another computer, actually a VM in my case but same difference.

As suggested by somebody in one of the earlier post, upgrade the tomtom software on your Go, then select 'Operate my GO' [it downloads software] then click 'Set current location' at the bottom. Tools, Use Latest Map Guarantee may update the map free of charge to v870.3406 from v840.2562

As for TomTom- not my favourite anymore. Had a chance to compare tomtom and copilot(side by side in the UK,France,Germany,Poland and Lithuania) and copilot was miles ahed of tomtom. IQ routes on tomtom-rubbish;takes you more time and really not the best option to chose. Shame on TomTom,I have used it for past 4 years...

I have this and its superb. The Live traffic info (free for year - wonder whether it is on these refurbs) has been very accurate so far, reporting accidents and delays. Also great is the bluetooth connection to my HTC Desire, allowing handsfree operation of the phone (TomTom used to dial via imported phonebook).
