    There is always one.....

So you're assuming other people would rather pay 10-15x more for an iPhone?

Plus this does Europe i'd love to see your phone bill for the constant data the iPhone would use after navigating Europe.

Plus I have actually used an iPhone for navigation the sound is too quiet to hear and the screen is too small to properly see.

vote hot. so useful to have European map when u do not have data access on your iPhone or android. And the lanes turning indication is a must where phone map is not as clear. and life time map updates too. I paid my first TomTom which was £500 and no updates and no lanes indication when switching lanes

I have used wise pilot on the blackberry, google maps, waze, copilot and nav free (IMO best app)on the iPhone but a standalone tomtom has consistently been the most reliable sat nav out there on the market.

    Hot deal

What happens in Devon and Cornwall where you're often lucky to get any … What happens in Devon and Cornwall where you're often lucky to get any signal? I'm guessing almost all on-line navigation requires you to be, errrr, on-line?

Most free iphone satnav apps, such as Navfree use iPhone's inbuilt GPS and doesn't require you to be, errr, on line whatsoever.

Funny you should mention Cornwall as I used my iphone satnav all last week around the Looe/St Martin area. Worked flawlessly and got me there and back from the north west.

I too am struggling to see the point in a standalone sat nav nowadays with the proliferation of smartphones

Have any of you saying "smart phone" actually ever got a unwanted call from someone right when you needed your navigation most?

The whole point of a dedicated sat nav is just that. It's a sat nav, and that's its functionality. no other. Someone rings you it doesn't screw you up.

If we wanted your opinion on using a smart phone then their would have been a hotukdeals posting for a £500 smart phone & £30 (or free) sat nav app...

No external SD card slot so upgrading (maps get bigger from one release to the next) can be a problem. Actual navigation is fine. The Via that markvirgo posted is also ok and possibly a better deal depending on your needs but neither are fab, just ok.

It comes with a lifetime maps promotion.

Firstly, thanks for correcting my post. In the detail it says Lifetime … Firstly, thanks for correcting my post. In the detail it says Lifetime Maps: No, but it obviously is from the graphic. I'm fairly sure it doesn't have IQ Routes. I can't see any mention of it but with limited internal memory and knowing the IQ map is quite a bit bigger I would say it is very unlikely. Nevertheless a decent satnav for the money.

got it Saturday and mine has IQ routes and 3 GB storage left after updating to latest map.

About to buy a sat nav. Any ideas whats better, this deal or this one?

The other one has a larger screen that I think you will appreciate alot.
Last week I bought a TomTom Via 135M from Halfords for £99. It came with Lifetime European Maps. It also has a really effective integrated screen mount, (I dont know if this is on all current TomToms). Plus the 5 inch screen really seems to make a big difference over my former 4 inch model.
It has Voice control so that you can select a new address without having to type it in, plus it has bluetooth that connects to your phone and becomes a handsfree carphone. Unfortunately they no longer show it on their website but it may be worth checking your local store as it was a stock item just a week ago. On their website they are still listing a UK version though for just £75 which you can find here.
    Hope this helps !

Does anyone know what accessory is required for speed cameras?

One thing everyone SHOULD know is that this is one of the few TT models to now support Itinerary Planning. A bargain for anyone who has an old model with any number of itineraries stored - like me with a TT One!

Just bought a Garmin 3598 but could have used Waze or google maps etc. why did I spent 240 quid on a new sat nav??? It's a stand alone unit and it works well. No need for data or anything. This tomtom unit is great. Sat Navs aren't dead. I prefer a dedicated unit. Hot

Problem with the iphone is that the drain of using an 'always on' satnav app is greater than the charge the phone. so after a while the phone dies.

i used a 3gs with the tomtom app a few times to get from edinburgh to oxford. each time when i got through birmingham the app would close as the battery had dropped to 10% despite being plugged in. You then desperately try and get the charge back over 10% so the bloody app will work..... only for it to close again when your battery goes under 10% just as you are trying to find your destination after 6 hours of driving.

Off to spain next year and looking for a euro map tom tom with lifetime updates like this. buying one like this is almost less than the charge the car hire Company wants to rent one for a fortnight.

  29. deleted1114797's avatar
As far as I can tell, the other two mentioned in previous comments are not included in the current promotion. The tomtom site t&cs specifically say that only two models are included and only if bought from halfords. Check the clickthrough from halfords.

Which one should I go for?

    1. This

    or

    2. This - Garmin Nuvi

    Thanks

Edit - Before you ask, I'm getting a deal which makes the Garmin £4.99 more than the Tomtom.

To be fair I recently used a galaxy note 3 in Portugal (didn't have to pay for extra maps) as a sat nav and it worked faultless as you don't need to be connected to the net the whole time as it uses the GPS.

As for data prices abroad it's not as bad as it use to be,I was paying £3 a day to use my uk allowance which isn't too bad as I have unlimited mins/dats/texts,so I could call home for hours or use the data if needed for sat nav and it wouldn't cost no more than the £3.also the phone I use has a 5.7inch screen and is plenty loud enough to hear.

I know not everyone has the latest phones with such features but just wanted to point out to those who might have such a phone that they can be very good as a sat nav,but I'm sure a dedicated sat nav unit will still be better.

if you don't have an up to date smart phone then this is a good deal

Its a great device, though with the Apple and Android devices mine is hardly ever used. Esp if you are using Apps like Waze or Google Maps which build routes based on live traffic.

However, if someone needs a Sat Nav - then this is really good. I have used it and recommend it. Good price too

    Waze is free

How many times do we see this comment. Waze relies on a data signal, not much good when in various arias of the country let alone abroad. This is a good deal, I have a tomtom and also several satnav apps including waze on my smartphone, 98% of the time i use my tomtom standalone unit.
