Worth a read. But in short, WiFi 6 helps more devices connect at once. But it's most helpful when those devices also use wi-fi 6 adapters.

Any difference between this and the Virgin media 4 hub as both wifi 6??
    nickbridal's avatar
Yes, third party routers are much better than those provides by isp. You'll get better speed and range and better reliability - this solved my issuee that I'd had. (edited)

Have the AX1800 version of this after virginmedia superhub WiFi kept on cutting out. Awesome bit of kit and hasn't missed a beat since I got it. Great price too

Am another VM customer. Current routers don’t do wifi6. Where lots of modern laptops etc… ARE wifi6, using MS Teams was atrocious. Bought this router. Configured VM superhub into Modem mode, connect new router to it and boom. Better signal in the house and drop out went from daily occurrence to non-existent. (edited)

I have this provided by Zen(CityFibre) it's great especially for an ISP provided router

    have they stopped providing Fritzboxes?

Does anyone know if I can connect an ethernet cable from my router to this to extend the wifi range or I need something else. I have the ethernet cable but no WiFi basically to the location I want.
    TheVoice's avatar
Yes you can, TP Link have some access points and whole home WiFi products that support OneMesh, so your devices would see both as one single WiFi network. You want one that supports ethernet backhaul so it can be connected to the router via ethernet, rather than acting as a WiFi repeater.

If got a BT “smart hub” and and get frequent Wi-Fi drop outs. Is this easy enough to just swap with the BT hub, log in and then get going?
    tonyyeb's avatar
    No, this isn't a modem - you need something like this TP-Link AC2100 Wireless MU-MIMO VDSL/ADSL Modem Router, Dual-Band, Wi-Fi Speed Up To 2.1 Gbps, OneMeshTM, Versatile Connectivity, 4 x Gigabit Ports +1x 3.0 USB Port, Easy setup (Archer VR600 V3) amzn.eu/d/7…2GB

Can this replace my generic Sky router?
    Ad86's avatar
No its not a modem, its only a router.
Your sky router will be doing both routing and modem (assuming you are using it as that)

Ordered to replace AC1750, if there will be no difference there's always a free return

LOL just cancelled my order as found that abroad much higher version AX55 costs £66 and order that one instead :P (edited)

    Can you post the link?

For anyone asking if its a straight swap for Talk Talk/Sky/Vodafone.

    No, its not.
If you can put your ISP router/modem into modem only mode then you can (you would still need to keep your isp router to connect to your broadband), this would only do the routing/wifi.
Most ISP ones you cant put into modem only mode.

Another option is get this and replace isp router with a standalone modem, but thats more advanced and far from a straight swap.
    325i's avatar
Or you can disable the wireless of your ISP router if you cant put it into modem mode.

Why are these companies to coy about the power output of their devices when it's probably the most important thing a buyer needs to know?
Maybe it's at the legal max - which isn't much if it's the old spec, or maybe it's the new spec, but if they don't tell you how would you know?

Bought one at the weekend as I'm sick of my Virgin Hub 3 randomly dropping out when I'm on Teams calls and poor wifi reach. Seems ok up to now but not really tested it too much. Wifi definitely better in the furthest bedroom.

Was easy to set up, set my hub 3 to modem mode, turned it off. Fired up the router and connected it to the hub, switched the hub on then went through the directions on the TP Link Tether app. No problems.. if you have the same setup just remember to plug your Virgin TV box in to the new router... I forgot and left mine in the hub wondering why on demand functions would not work !

    Heat added.

I already have an AC1200 which I bought to improve a Virgin SuperHub 3 (it did). I’m wondering if it’s worth getting this instead OR if it’s worth getting this to plug into the SuperHub, then use the AC1200 as a OneMesh point?

We have a Sky Q hub downstairs, and the wifi connection to our PS4 and TV upstairs is woeful.
Is this better than the Sky Q box, and if so, will it work with my Sky Fiber connection?

Does anyone recommend this over HUAWEI AX3 AX3000, which is a lot cheaper and also wifi 6? Thanks.
    GreenSpring's avatar
Others have had success with the Huawei router but it hasn't been very good for me at all, the range is poor and the speeds are awful, even when stood right in front of it using WiFi 6. Ended up buying this TP link router and haven't had any issues with it at all. I may have just bought a faulty Huawei router but it very much seemed a case of 'buy cheap, buy twice' for me.

Could any of you tech guys give me some advice please? I have a VM Hub 3 and I'm using Deco M4's for wifi, could I connect this router to my VM Hub3 ( putting it in modem mode) and then connect the M4's to the this router? Would this work and give me WiFi 6 on a laptop with a Wifi 6 card upgrade, or would the M4's not pass the Wifi 6 to the laptop? I'm a bit of a novice with all this and any advice would be appreciated
    Shrekt's avatar
You'd get Wifi 6 if your laptop chose this as the AP to connect to, but the M4 are 802.11ac which is Wifi 5. What speeds do you pay for? What would the benefit of Wifi 6 give you if you only have one device that has it?

Thanks for posting. Am trying to set up a VM broadband in a bungalow. The distance from the hub/router to the end of the house will be approx 15metres.

I am planning to use this as a router and put the VM hub into modem mode. Would i need a wifi extender? Anyone recommend any?

    Many thanks (edited)
    Shrekt's avatar
See what happens with just this, then decide

Unless you have loads of Wifi 6 devices, I'd look at a Wifi 5 AC access point, e.g. TP Link Omada or Aruba InstantOn
  22. david_lwh's avatar
    Many thanks

Will give it a go as is and then adapt if necessary.

What’s the real world difference between this model (AX23) and the £10 more expensive and counter intuitively named AX20. It mentions dual vs quad core, but does this make any difference or just a way of ripping off the top trumps crew?
  24. sdog's avatar
One of these fixed my virgin media issues. Went from ridiculous latency spikes constantly to zero.
  25. Jackace's avatar
I have ax3000 since dec '20, there is an issue with it not being able to handle WiFi 6 without consistent drops (micro stutter), on the oculus quest 2 it means a stutter every 10-20 seconds. Quite a well known issue and I believe it's due to its dual-core processer going at 100% (basically underpowered), wifi 5 and 4 are absolutely fine. I gave up waiting for a fix and turned off wifi 6 and it's not missed a beat since. Interestingly the ax1800 doesn't have this issue which is likely due to that having a quad-core processor.

It's a great router but avoid if wanting it for wifi 6. (edited)
    gary333's avatar
This AX1800 is dual core. God knows why they use the same numbers across multiple models, seems designed to mislead

I've got this, wifi 6 works but I've got stone walls the regular virgin hub 4 was better for me
  27. kayum91's avatar
This or the Huawei CPE pro 2?
  28. Findmeanotherdeal's avatar
I tried this, as far as the range is concerned, this was no better than the ISP router. Faster with WiFi 6, if you have the compatible devices. Heat for price.
    the.porter's avatar
I’ve had so many different routers high end ax11000 etc etc and all had same WiFi range as isp routers only a mesh system sorts it out
  29. PaulWhitehead's avatar
If you put vm hub into modem mode can you not use that hub to connect things via ethernet ports
    Shrekt's avatar
No because a router is what gives a network the capability of connecting more than one device

I’ve got the TalkTalk ‘super’ router can I replace with this ?

I currently have Vodafone fibre. Could I replace my router with this, straight swap. Do I need to do anything with the settings etc. Thanks in advance 👌🏼

Is it worth paying a tenner extra for the AX20
    qfel's avatar
only if you need USB port
  33. Adam_H7's avatar
I'd recommend an Asus over TP-Link but this is a very good price.
  34. naheed_asif's avatar
Save yourself some cash and get a unifi AC by ubiquiti. No nonsense connect to up to 300 devices. No dropouts and zero problems. Use the app to configure.
    Shrekt's avatar
Why are you suggesting an AP as a replacement to a router?
  35. AirSpeed's avatar
Hi all, I’ve got VM at home, which hasn’t been great. Wifi keeps cutting out, etc. I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that all our light switches and most sockets are smart, i.e most are connected to the VM hub and some are connected via the zigbee hub. I just think my network has too much on it.

Is this AX23 something that would help with that (I’d switch to modem mode on the hub) or do I need to look at other devices? Thanks all!
  36. greens117's avatar
Will this work with BT fiber optic to the house modem? Instead of the generic router.
  37. AirSpeed's avatar
Box.co.uk has open box/grade AX20 versions going for £50ish. Bought one yesterday. I believe they’re slightly better than the AX23 as they’re quad core and have a usb socket, but I stand to be corrected!box.co.uk/Arc…tml

I’m looking for some advice. I have a Virgin media hub 5 and have been experiencing issues when connecting to a Remote Desktop for work. Sometimes it would connect but I wouldn’t be apple to call into meetings on teams or open the web browser . I don’t have issues when connecting through a personal hotspot (phone) and can connect so figured it was a hub issue.

I had a WRX3200AC and my hub in modem mode which fixed the initial issue. As the WRX is quite old now it seemed to slow down all the other devices and limit the band width each one could use in comparison to the hub 5. I started to get buffering on stream and longer loading times etc. and when I would speedtest the set up id get around 1/10th of the speed compared to the hub 5 on its own. This ultimately led to me going back to the hub 5 for the sake of everyone else in the house.

So after all of that can anyone recommend this as something that will help my issue? Or is it a waste of time?
    Lakhbir27's avatar
This will work - you have your virgin hub in modem only (that switches off its' wifi) plug ethernet from hub to wan port on this router, setup the wifi and you are good to go.

I can't vouch for the quality of this router, but TP link re generally good.

I have Asus routers in my house, and they are good with regular s/w updates.

I have an old ASUS RT-N66U that's on it's last legs.

Will this router or the AX20 be better than this? Thanks.

Will this be better than BTSmart Hub 2 with whole home mini system? I find speeds towards the end of the mesh slow, but just the smarthub2 itself plugged in obviously doesnt reach, so my question is really would I see a benefit of using the SmartHub as the modem and this as a router for the house?
