As a Stand alone installation Tesla Powerwalls did attract VAT at 20%

The Powerwall 2 can (unlike many other battery systems) be installed outside and does not suffer from cold/hot climate issues. It has a capacity of 13.5kW. It has a 10 Year warranty and a very good name in the industry as its more 'proven' than many other Battery Storage Systems.

The 'Gateway' is an add on that you can install if you wish to have the facility of keeping the home power on if the grid is down. In effect it isolates your home and power stored in the Powerwall from the grid... so you can keep your lights or medical equipment etc on). It also has features such as 'Storm watch' that will keep poeer in reserve if a storm is predicted.

You can use the powerwall as an add on to an existing Solar array OR you can install it as a stand alone option. If you use it without Solar Panels... you need to switch to a 'Time of use' tarrif as this will allow you to charge up the Powerwall at a cheper rate (usually overningt) and then use the cheaper power for your home. OR you can (if you select a compatible tariff) re-sell the energy back to the grid at a higher price during peak periods.

There was a discussion about Stand Alone batteries today on BBC Radio 4. You And Yours .. From 23mins 14 Seconds.. Discussing Pay Back time etc... bbc.co.uk/sou…tlh

In the best scenario you can possibly recover the cost of the Powerwall in 3-4 years.

Please note the cost is PLUS installation However IF you have an existing Powerwall the cost of an additional one should not be too bad (im told by my local Installer).

    Not Quite...
To clarify.. If you install a battery at the same time, same company and as part of the same invoice for a brand new Solar PV installation... the whole system is VAT free..

    HOWEVER ..
If you want an additional battery (at a later date), if you want a stand-alone Battery or if you have an existing PV System (Perhaps a FIT Payment one) .. You would need to pay VAT at 20% on the Battery.

Does Powerwall need other equipment such as an inverter or is it fully integrated, with little more than an isolator needed?

It is in effect stand alone. All in one box.
You can install one on its own and it will charge directly from the grid with no external inverter needed.

Inverters are used to convert Solar panel voltage to mains voltage and It does not need an inverter unless you are going to add solar that feeds into the grid (Or the Powerwall as Priority)

    Hope that helps.

I have had one for over 4 years and it has made a massive difference to my bills.. to the point we are now looking at a second one (Until now we would have had to pay 20% VAT for a second one as it was not part of the initial installation!).

Not just powerwall it's for any home batteries installed from a VAT registered company, Tesla is overpriced so if you want save money probably better with a different brand.
