*** MOST RECENT UPDATE: 30th November 2017 ***

NOTE #1: in each case, I've put the lowest current "normal" (pay, and get the phone) price I'm aware of, as well as alternative routes (if any) for people comfortable to PAYG and cancel if that works out cheaper.

NOTE #2: In many cases, TopCashback may be payable. Never hurts to go via TCB rather than direct when you're ready to stop browsing and start buying!

NOTE #3: I have shown multiple vendors when they're within a few pounds, in case you have a preference or can figure out how to get more cashback from one than the other.

All the phones below should come with at least Android 6.0. Many are Android 7.0 or better, but please double-check.

Useful but if you are brave enough to buy from Chinese websites there is a lot more value in some of the more exotic Xiaomi and Lenovo's that aren't retailed in the UK

Oh, absolutely. But the person I did the research for wanted a more "conventional" purchasing route for stuff that's sold and supported in Europe. Figured some on HUKD might too... (edited)

Also worth checking Amazon warehouse deals as well. I picked up a brand new open box Wileyfox Swift 2 for a family member for £85 a few weeks back...

BTW, although the list grew a bit, I originally drew it up by checking all the phones that featured in at least one "best of 2017" budget phone roundup in the last few months. These are the sources I checked...

If you've got time, dip into some of the above and you'll really start to get a grip on the commonalities i.e. the phones that get picked up across multiple publications for particular reasons (finish, screen, battery life, camera, raw speed etc.) There's no "one size fits all" perfect answer at this price-point... it depends what you place most importance on. Too true.
I bought a Geotel Note for around £65 a while back (cheaper now) an well pleased. Getting accessories is an issue with this model though.

Based on personal experience, id warn anyone away from the Wileyfox phones. I thought id got my daughter a real bargain after reading several reviews (techradar etc) and bought the Swift 2. After a month or two it started randomly restarting, once it got to double figures in a day i decided enough was enough. Try and contact customer support, nothing, they dont state ANY contact number and dont respond to emails. Luckily I bought via Amazon and they sorted the refund. Heat for the post though!

Yes a great phone for the money. I was tempted myself as a replacement for my Lenovo P2 (just for better camera) sadly the one thing that lets it down a bit is the 3250MaH battery.

Once you've lived with a P2 with its monster 3 day battery it's hard to go back to normal smartphone battery life......

Would be worth adding Xiaomi's Mi A1 then. Their first "world phone", and supported in Europe. Tough call between that and the P10 Lite, but I went for an A1 due to the updates being created/supported by Google themselves.

I would certainly have considered purchasing this instead of the Max if it weren't for the non-removable battery (even though the back cover is detachable).

I think that's the trouble with pretty much all the mid range Android phones. There's always a compromise with something. Either, screen resolution, battery size, size of RAM,ROM etc. I WAS surprised that the Cheetah didn't have a removable battery, considering the back is removable.

I'm looking for something to replace my Z3 compact. I want something ideally no bigger (size wise) but with the same features (waterproof, wireless charging, compass) just with a bigger memory and faster processing.. It's been a great phone, I'd like a replacement though... (edited)

I bought a Nokia 5 a week ago for £129.95 at Argos. Good phone for the price, even better if you can get it unlocked for £99.99. Just a heads up: Frequently security updates have been released as promised by HMD, but there is a known bug on version 7.1.2 that kills apps sent to the background. For now I'm holding on 7.1.1 and everything seems fine. There are rumours that the latest update released fixed the problem; can't confirm yet. See link (xda-developers forum): Nokia 5 bug

On the specs side, people complain about 720p and 2gb of ram, but IMO the phone is fine for a budget phone and for my usage (basically, phone calls, light internet browsing and podcasts), so can't comment on games. I like the fingerprint gimmick and the presence of a 3.5mm jack. I had narrowed my choice between Nokia 5 and Huawei P10 lite, and chose based on price and software updates. Hope this helps.

720 is well good enough for these small screen appliances and will be as sharp as you can get because the same number of pixels are in the same space of a similar sized portion of a large screen 4K TV.
