What's new with the iPhone SE
The iPhone SE is a compact, affordable model that has been updated with Apple's most powerful A13 Bionic chip, the same chip used in the iPhone 11 Pro. Alongside fast and fluid performance, Apple have included premium features like Portrait mode photography and Touch ID secure unlocking.

More power, better battery
iPhone SE is supercharged by Apple's fastest ever smartphone chip, the A13 Bionic also used in the iPhone 11 Pro. It works faster when you need it and conserves power when you don't. You'll get up to 13 hours of video on a single charge - if you need to give it a quick boost, it's also compatible with wireless chargers, or can be connected for an 18W fast charger (available separately) to go from zero to 50% in 30 minutes.

Design that makes a splash
There's a splash and water-resistant enclosure that protects against spills, splashes and dust. The Home button is completely reengineered, featuring a solid-state design with Touch ID Fingerprint sensor and haptic feedback. Constructed from aluminium and glass, the case is light but durable.

Crisp details and true to life colours
With a wide colour gamut, the screen delivers cinema-standard colours, meaning more shades of the spectrum can be used to create a vivid, vibrant image. What you see on the screen is a truer representation of your world, whether you're showing off holiday photos or shopping for the perfect present online. The Retina HD display integrates 3D touch, giving you more ways to interact with your apps.

Cool camera
With added optical image stabilisation, an f/1.8 aperture and six-element lens to make it even better at shooting photos and videos in low light. Up to 50% more light is captured by the camera sensor compared to previous models, while the Quad-LED True Tone flash adjusts to the colour temperature of the surroundings for sharper, better-lit photos.

The advanced camera system uses the powerful A13 chip to bring you Portrait mode, blurring the background of your shot to put the focus on the subject - it even works for selfies. Change the level of blur even after you've taken the photo. Next-generation Smart HDR can intelligently tailor the lighting and shadow detail.

Videos can be shot up to 4K, with Slo-mo support in 1080p and 720p HD. The front-facing 7MP camera allows you to Facetime at higher resolutions with wider colour capture for natural-looking skin tones.

Stereo sound
The stereo speakers deliver 2x the audio output of previous generations, with increased dynamic range for better music, video and calls. The iPhone SE features a Lightning connector for your headphones.

Fingerprint security
With Touch ID, your iPhone is more secure than ever. Touch ID lets you securely unlock your iPhone with your fingerprint. It can be also used to approve purchases from iTunes, iBooks and the App Store without the need for a password.

Price aside, is there any reason you would get the SE over a 12 mini now?

Well price is the major factor, you could buy two of these for one of those considering you'll pay another £100 for 128GB for the Mini. Looking at the Mini it doesn't really add much other than the screen and an extra camera. You could say the new SoC.... but when has last years been too slow? It's still faster than any Android.

With a £400 price difference that’s a huge factor for most everyday people.

Other than price, I would say touch ID and the familiarity of having a button and no notch. I think for older people the SE is actually a better choice. The button is so useful and very underestimated in terms of usefulness for ease of interacting with the UI. The SE does everything you need a phone to do. If I could snag an SE 128gb new for about £320-£350 I would probably buy it over the iPhone 12 mini and just use the difference to upgrade my iPad.

I was all set to get the SE, I've had the last one for 3 years and loved it. But I'm now tempted by the mini, partially because the 5g maybe bigger in a couple of years, nice screen etc, but mainly I want a new phone for the camera, pics of the kids etc, and the price difference is similar to a camera lens i'd buy for my camera I can't take with me as often now.

I'll research it more, but the SE looks awesome for it's price

I’ve had phones that have both and it’s not as good as you’d think. For whatever reason your brain just gets tripped up deciding which one you’ll use each time. I’m glad they stuck to one.... but Face ID doesn’t work horizontally so it sucks.

There aren’t any I know of with true mix of both as in proper security Face ID. The Note 9 had iris scanner and fingerprint. I actually used iris a fair bit when on charging stand. Only one I’m not sure about it the p20 pro. Covid is a large reason my XS Max and Pixel 4 XL are sat in a drawer. Got the 5 on the way and ordered an SE for that reason

Iris scanner is the reason why I didn't upgrade to note 10 from 9,it's really the safest and more convenient security feature. I guess it costed too much at Samsung after the Note 9...

I personally returned brand new iPhone 7 128gb back in 2016 because of the poor connectivity, I am using 3 network and did swapped the sim between 5s and 6s and the 7 , the 7 was unbelievably poor reception, returned after a week of hope will get better. Research shows that all iPhones since iPhone 7 has poor connectivity due to the intel chips inside, got rid of my iPhone XS recently because of the same issue and now looking again for an iPhone, God these are best phones but with worst connection of all , wtf Apple!? So far Huawei p30 lite beats everything by far, but I need an iPhone too. Google pixel 4a also not as good as huawei in that terms. These days it’s so difficult to buy a well working phone from both Apple and android.

I’m with three, no problems before with iPhone 7. Can’t even watch Netflix on this without it blurring out. Have changed sim with no difference

Remember this one comes still comes with Power Adapter and earpods each worth £19, if you buy direct from Apple you will not have that.

On the apple site even the old ones are showing as no longer coming with a power adapter. So once stocks deplete it won't anymore. Though imagine any ordered from john lewis for a while will have power adapters.

"As part of our efforts to reach our environmental goals, iPhone SE no longer includes a power adapter or EarPods. Please use your existing Apple power adapter and headphones or buy these accessories separately."

That’s a good point what does this mean. My mum has an old iPad and phone (not sure pad but phone uses lightening think old SE), and wants a new iPhone and iPad. Can she use her old charger?
