Calling all PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 owners! Coming off of the reveal of Call of Duty: Vanguard just a few short days ago, we’re excited to bring more good news: from August 27 at 10 AM PT to August 29 at 10 AM PT, you will be able to participate in the Call of Duty: Vanguard PlayStation Alpha which will feature Sledgehammer Games’ innovative new game mode, Champion Hill.
This PlayStation-exclusive Alpha isn’t only the first chance at playing the newest Multiplayer mode in the Call of Duty franchise, but also the first opportunity to play Call of Duty: Vanguard before its November 5 release. This will be just a small slice of the overall Multiplayer offering coming to Call of Duty: Vanguard when it launches, but is a great chance for PlayStation players to get their hands on the game and provide valuable feedback to Sledgehammer Games.
For most PlayStation players, a PlayStation Plus Subscription is not required*. Only a console and an internet connection are needed to participate, and no preorder is required.
Before diving into details about how you can access the Alpha, we wanted to give you some background on what Champion Hill is all about as well as some tips for making sure you end up on top.
Champion Hill Primer
Sledgehammer Games is proud to introduce Champion Hill, a multi-arena survival tournament where tactics and strategy combine with quick-action, close-quarter gunplay. The mode is all about impactful gameplay, from the intense periods of combat to the decisions made in-between.
In Champion Hill, your squad — which during the Alpha will be either a Duo (2v2) or Trio (3v3)— will compete in a round-robin tournament against seven other squads, with each squad having a set number of lives to start with. The mission is to reduce all other squads’ life count to zero in a series of timed Combat rounds, before the same happens to you. Do that, and claim victory on Champion Hill.
In this mode, everyone starts with the same Loadout, but you will collect cash by taking enemy lives and picking up drops scattered around the map. This cash will allow you to upgrade your starting weapons and purchase new armaments, equipment, Perks, and Killstreaks during Buy Rounds that happen between Combat Rounds.
It’s in the Buy Rounds that the real strategy comes in (more on that below). No two matches will be the same, since the way that you use cash throughout each match (e.g. held for bigger upgrades as the Rounds go on, or used on smaller, more incremental upgrades along the way) will greatly change how you and your squad counter every other squad. It’s a chess-match, and one that has a ton of opportunity to dynamically evolve as each match progresses.
But anyone knows that a great strategy is only as good as its execution. And with that, players can be confident that their skill in those Combat Rounds will determine whether glory is earned or not.
Another unique aspect of Champion Hill is that it is made up of four maps combined into the Champion Hill arena. Specifically, there is a central Buy Station Area and four Combat arenas: Airstrip, Trainyard, Market, and Courtyard. A cool feature of this setup is that once you are eliminated, you can watch the tournament continue from the Buy Station Area spectator platform. You can also press the Up directional button to enter Spectate Mode, get a bird’s eye view of the battle, or select an area to see the fight through your competitor’s eyes. But ideally it doesn’t come to that. Let’s discuss some ways to help you stand atop Champion Hill.

Campaign, multiplayer with 20 maps, zombies and a new battle royale. Decent amount of content there for your money. "Lacklustre" you haven't even seen the game yet calm down.
Ok master gamer I'll bow to your superior knowledge
I understand the negativity but what’s a bad sign exactly? I thought all previous call of duty games had some sort of beta / alpha tests which were giving you access to a small portion of multiplayer to try before release? What makes this one any different than the rest?
An unhappy camper you might say
If you preordered then yes, you got the chance to play but that trailer was shockingly bad…and I think activism on now it, trying to salvage something and yes I buy cod every year… since the beginning so I’m not against cod… I’m just fed up like most gamers that if we continue to give into the groundhog effect then they’ll just keep collecting there millions if not billions each year. Cold War last year was my breaking point of this is getting out hand, but the industry doesn’t care because when people like myself fall out of the love of gaming , there’s millions more people taking my place.. it’s like a bad phone contract, the existing customer doesn’t matter but the new up and coming client gets a better deal.. this honestly looks like a bad version of battlefield 5 mixed in with the usual recycled cod traits.
I read half way and I was like “woah, slow down mate”
You’re just speculating based on a single trailer whereas this is your chance to try the actual thing and judge based on your experience.
I don’t think I’ve preordered any call of duty games, ever but I’ve always got to try the beta / alpha for them in the past. This one also doesn’t require any preorder to be placed, nor a ps plus sub is required to play it! You were saying this is a bad sign in a way that I thought you’re specifically talking about this release, i.e I thought you may know something I don’t.
Let’s be honest, no one has pushed you into preordering in the past. You’ve done it by your own will. This is just a alpha test giving you the freedom to think better and decide. They’re not charging you for trying it nor expecting you place a preorder for it. So I honestly don’t understand what the bad sign is?
I think you’re the one who got offended not me. I was merely asking about that bad sign. Not sure if you really are trying to say that this could’ve been potentially good if they were forcing you to preorder it to gain access to beta or am I keep misreading your comments? If a developer has confidence in their product, they’d never force the consumer into marketing tricks. I’m not defending activision or call of duty franchise. Only trying to explain your logic is wrong.
Think this way, you’re having a chance to try things for yourself and decide instead of imagining them and speculating. (edited)
We're asking you
Iv been around games long enough to know when we’re getting rope-a-doped, I’m sure you say the same thing when fifa comes out each year but I’ll stick with option A
What's that?
what’s the issue >.>
You mean giving Millions of people the chance to play (gun game mode) and not the actual maps people could get a good feel of.
You do you Bud but then if we all agreed with your opinion we would have world peace in no time, simples!
AHH so nothing, figures
Neither does yours. Cold War is rubbish but they give you free trials every other week.
Yeah I never got the whole camping thing. You generally lie down or stand still while sniping, surely? so I legitimately never understood why people called it camping and moaned constantly about it. I would mix it up and go on foot quite a bit though and join in the general battle. You had to, to get 40 kills. Not enough targets if you simply stay in 1 position for 10 minutes or you’d eventually get shot anyway.
Ahhh, Vossenack on the original Call Of Duty 2 was my fav sniper map, miss that game, just pure simple fun, no complicated load outs and stuff like they have nowdays..
“Yawn”
Even though I’ve been knocking about playing games since 1991 I only came in on MW2. Got really into it and put in over 1000 hours which is nothing impressive now but was seen as a lot back then. Then another 1000 hours on MW3. My favourite map of all time is Estate in MW2. My gameplan was to get to the bedroom upstairs in the big house, equip thermal Google’s and WA2000, plant claymores and a tactical insertion in the bathroom then heroically hold the room for the duration of the game, shooting out the window and turning to get anyone who tried to enter up the stairs or back window. Nobody knew about the tactical insertion in the bathroom so I would pop back out and stab the guy who killed me if anyone managed to finally get me. It was the best thing ever. I would shriek and laugh as I held the room single handedly. I must’ve called in 20 nukes doing this tactic. (edited)
That reads to me more like Cyberpunk than COD. To be fair to Call of Duty they have had beta’s for the last 6 years, giving plenty a time to get a feel of the game. If not the beta there was a lot of gameplay videos available before launch as well.
Think people are being too harsh on COD but are okay to get repetitive rubbish like Fifa, Gears and so on.
Agreed
Ask EA/Dice
You just summed up my point, and if you actually read between the lines rather than get offended, yes! Please all do try the alpha…BUT…it’s a bad sign there giving a early access without preorder, my experience has always red flagged because there giving you recycled crap. I probably do know something that you don’t, that this clearly isn’t a DEAL. I gotta go sanitise my hands now. Wash the filth away from all this explaining…
