Euro-inspired tactical combat in an evolving campaign.

Being a mercenary on the edge of civilisation is anything but easy. For those stupid or brave enough to leave the relative safety of Gloomhaven's walls, adventure, wealth, and fame await in wild and shadowy forests, snowy mountain caves, and long-forgotten crypts. Just don't expect anyone to pay for your services up-front, because no one expects you to come back alive.

Gloomhaven is a cooperative game of tactical combat in a unique, evolving fantasy world. Each player will assume the role of a hardened mercenary with their own personal motives. Together, players will fight through a campaign of scenarios that reacts and changes based on the player's actions, creating a unique game state full of discovered treasure, retired adventurers and permanent choices. Each scenario offers players deep tactical decisions, where ability cards have multiple uses, and using the right ability at the right time can mean the difference between success and failure. Gloomhaven offers streamlined tactical combat without dice against fully automated enemies, each with their own unique behaviour patterns. In this box, players will find a fully realised fantasy campaign experience of unparalleled scope and depth.

It's not a quick game - that's true - but not crazy long either.

I play using Gloomhaven Helper running on a laptop which does some of the admin and speeds up the game. Once you've got into the swing of it you're looking at around 2 hours per mission with 3 players - a bit longer with 4. So a nice afternoons gaming.

    Hi,
Just my tuppence worth. I had JOTL and found it good, while not being completely blown away. I'm into boardgaming quite heavily, and only ever play solo these days (even before the pandemic). I intended to get GH if JOTL was excellent, and in the end, was super relieved I didn't go for GH.
For you, I would say play JOTL first. The gameplay is the same as GH after the intro missions, and set up and tear down is MUCH simpler. Only If you're ravenous for more after completing it, then GH would be recommended, I would say.

This price doesn't help, and I just got as close as putting it in my basket, despite the above. But what's keeping me away at the moment is the fact that I'd have to spend extra money on some sort of storage solution. Anything from £15 for plano boxes, to £35-40 for official solutions. I can't help but think that's easily another two decent games I could get instead of this, which I think I'd possibly have buyers remorse on.

I think if I can resist, I might give JOTL another go and consider getting GH digital on Steam. Apparently its very faithful.

If you haven't even opened JoTL then I wouldn't get Gloomhaven - yet.

JoTL is a lot easier to set up and tear down than standard gloomhaven, no map pieces, limited other pieces, as they are all in the pages of the book, rather than being carboard pieces like in gloomhaven.

I have had Gloomhaven for a couple years and played it extensively and its awesome. Bought JoTL and Forgotten circles, played Forgotten circles first and just about to move onto JoTL. JoTL has not got the longevity of Gloomhaven, only 4 characters and less mechanics to deal with, but it would be a great way to get you into Gloomhaven.

For my 2 player game of gloomhaven, a single scenario takes at least 2-3 hours, at least, we play 'slowly' chatting as we go, so maybe you could go faster, but why, its a social thing to do so take your time.

I have played it 4 player and that takes a lot longer purely due to each person having to make decisions and take their turn.

You can also play it solo, just controlling 2 characters at once, so no excuse if you don't have friends

As someone else has said, even for JoTL, get the Gloomhaven companion app, it makes managing turns a lot easier, means you have to get less stuff out of the box and generally makes it a more enjoyable experience.

And with Frosthaven coming next year playing either JoTL or Gloomhaven will set you in good stead for that.

Jaws of the Lion is more beginner friendly. If you’ve not played either before then I’d start there. Gloomhaven depth is huge for when you want a bigger experience.

Obviously there’s also Frosthaven that went through KS recently, but the same applies.

Yeah, I think it's a really good digital conversion, to be honest. I've been playing through it with my dad as we don't live close to each other and it's been a really handy way to keep in touch.

The tutorials are really good and engaging, so you don't even have to read the manual.

Also a big fan of having less stuff in my house... if I kept buying stuff, I'd run out of space and have to buy a bigger house and work til I die haha (edited)

Wow that is a great price! Heat

I am currently playing through "Jaws of the Lion" with a friend which is a great intro into the world of Gloomhaven with 25 scenarios. We get about one evening a week and getting through 1 scenario each session. It means that we should get about at least 6 months out of it which is great value for the cost of it. The full Gloomhaven has a whopping 95 scenarios which would be about 2 years worth of play taking into account missed sessions and replaying failed scenarios. Sounds like a hell of a lot of value for £75 considering that's just for one single playthrough with the option to restart with one of the many different characters available to play as.

Gloomhaven is probably best bought if you either have very few board games already or play a very large amount of board games. If you play board games less frequently and/or dont want to play solo then Gloomhaven (original) is not an optimal choice as your group will probably not want to play the same game for what may be over a year to complete

A lot more complex, but slightly similar (dungeon, hex board) with a time limit, as you have to play cards to take your turn and the cards slowly get discarded from your pool and don't get replenished.
