Can you update ram on this?

No, these things are slim and most of the internals are taken up by the battery.

    Really nice portable machines. (edited)

Voted hot. Perfect form factor, very compact, slim, metal built, and with more than decent specs. I pay extra for ultrabooks, and I compromise on specs, but in this particular case, I think the price is perfect for this. This should be much hotter, clearly people don't care about built quality and compact size. (edited)

Correct! 'Compact' is what I'm after.

At last! A good spec laptop with a 14 inch screen and within my budget! Screen could be smaller but that would mean going Surface Pro which cost much more. However I can live with this.

That's why this is called ultrabook, so it is very portable. Normal laptops are for other purposes, not necessarily for travelling. LG Gram 17 inch is more compact than a regular 13-14 inch HP.

Waiting for someone to say the screen isn't big enough :-)
This feels really good ... tho I would prefer more ram.

For soldered RAM it would be nice if manufacturers can put 16Gb (8×2) on dual channel.

I'm about to pull the trigger on the i7 Zenbook that Costco have on sale for £750 but I don't mind an i5 and this seems a good price.
    BUT....
I have heard the RAM is not upgradeable on these Zenbooks. Does anyone know if that's really the case, as this thing only has 8GB

It's not upgradeable, so you will be stuck with that forever.

That is correct, RAM is not upgradable. I managed to bag a 500gb refurbished excellent version from Laptop Outlet Direct for a similar price. It's a beautiful machine and for my needs 8gb is sufficient.

but what about fans? Do you have control over them?
I bought Dynabook, nice machine, but fan management not existing and laptop is loud, this won't be nice in crowded space like airplane

what annoys me about costco is they are up themselves re membership criteria if you are not in a trade.
tho for this deal i might just sign up for the online membership if this is available to online also

    johnjrambo
I hear you but for the price of the membership one get a extended warranty and customer service other retailers can only dream about.....if have a problem with the laptop they will try to resolve first, if they can't they'll just refund the purchase price.

So I need a compact(ish) laptop that performs well with docs, emails, Webex, and Citrix VDI and lasts for a couple of years.

I don't know how good this will be as out of touch with current processors, etc. Should this do or need something stronger? Pleae suggest.

If stronger - then I will go for this one - hotukdeals.com/dea…507

(OLED or touchscreen is not a preference but just nice to have.... as mostly use laptop with extern HD monitors) (edited)

I would go for this one for screen size. Ideally you want something with a smaller screen size - 14 inches or less, they are much easier to haul around trains and airports (edited)

I'm sceptical whether this was even available. I logged on before midnight and waited for ten minutes but it was still showing as "out of stock". Logged on this morning and ditto...
