SHIELD TV works with virtually any TV or display that supports HDMI. SHIELD TV can be plugged directly into your TV or receiver, depending on your preference.
Note To output 4K Ultra HD or HDR content, your display must be capable of those features. If you are connecting your SHIELD TV to your 4K HDR TV through an AV receiver or sound bar, the AV receiver or sound bar must support HDMI 2.0 (with HDCP 2.2).
SHIELD TV supports up to 4K HDR playback at 60 FPS (H.265/HEVC) and up to 4K playback at 60 FPS (VP8, VP9, H.264, MPEG1/2).Successful HDR support is determined by multiple factors such as the TV model, the used streaming source/app and the source material all supporting HDR

I was a big fan of these but not sure there worth buying now over say Amazon's box that can also do Atmos in Plex and has better app support, better CPU. Nvidia really need to upgrade this format. I use Google tv on my Sony, it made my shield pro redundant. Ai upscaler is the only thing worthy of note.

Nvidia have come a long way with upscaling too, just hope they haven’t forgot about this product in favour of chasing bigger fish.

That and I can’t stand all the ads on fireTV

Really good as have the pro to make an old plasma tv….smart. Use it all the time as super fast navigation. For super pocketable I use a Roku (bit slow) but these are still very portable. They are overdue an update but still a no brainer to pick one up as integrate well and support all the mainstream apps.

If you are only using 'mainstream apps' a Shield, especially the Pro, is a total waste of money, a 4K FireTV Stick Max is much better value with equally fast nav. As for support it doesn't do UHD on iPlayer (obviously not an issue with an old plasma) or officially has All4 at all.

I'm guessing you've had this a while though from when the Sticks weren't all that which is fair enough

This is a cold deal as £129 has been the normal selling price for several years.

Yeah these have been £90 via Amazon Warehouse before. This is the standard price for them.

Where Nvidia get the balls to sell this thing at this price I don't know.

The internals are so old you can probably buy them for 5p each at any cornershop in China or Korea.

Plenty of alternatives on Amazon I.e. xiaomi. At least from hardware perspective.

So it's bit of a flaff to get the right video playback on a htpc. I've heard from others by getting a shield (not sure which one) it will pretty much play all video formats and with its sound format to go through my av amp. Any advise as I think I will look to getting a shield to play my content on my nas than use my htpc.

Should be easy, mine has been no hassle and plays everything I've thrown at it with no intervention. Are you using yours for more 'grey area' media maybe? Only real advantage the Shield has is it will play Dolby Vision but the differences to HDR10 are hardly noticeable if any.

Worth paying extra for the pro

Anyone know the difference between this and the pro?

The big advantage of the pro is that it can be a Plex server, the standard one can't.

Shield TV on the left, Shield TV pro on the right.

Fire cube TV 3rd Gen hands down if you paying this price,
The shield TV has been on a downhill spiral for a year or so ever since the Android 11 debacle... Terrible device now .. from King to chump! in no time say`s it all.
I have the 2017 shield TV 16GB downgraded back to Android 9 and it`s fine , But I would never recommend getting any Nvidia shield device now. Much wiser options out there than these dogs.

Prefer an Apple TV 4K, faster and cheaper

And become an obsolete like the previous generations. You can update system but can’t install all new apps without jailbreak. Nvidia is more future proof and overall better. Fire stick Max offers WiFi6 and is a decent solution l, especially after jailbreak.

If you open a credit account as a new customer at very.co.uk you get 20% off so can get this for £103.99.

Great device but this is the usual price so not a hot deal.

Anyone looking to use this to play back high quality 4k content that they've "acquired", you need the Pro version, not the tube.
The tube doesn't have enough ram to keep up. The reddit sub has countless examples of this issue.
    I have a 2017 Pro, its great.

How about if you have a pro as a server, would the tube version be ok in another room as a player?

Personally if you're willing to pay this much for such old tech then just buy the Apple TV the speed and everything is night and day different compared to something like this.

I even had this one a couple of years ago and the speed and lag was so bad (edited)

Does this offer real-time AI upscaling of 480/720/1080p content to 4K?
    smackos's avatar
    smackos
Yes/no. It does have AI upscaling, and in practice it's pretty impressive. There is one downside, and that because this doesn't have quite the same amount of RAM as the Pro model, it means that the AI upscaling isn't available for as many resolution frame rates as the Pro version.

I have the 2019 pro and will definitely upgrade. No need yet, it does everything I need and doesn't prevent me from using a custom launcher.

The iPlayer thing is ridiculous, you're quite right.
Thankfully my TV iPlayer app does it, but still.

You can connect a external SSD using the usb port and use it as internal storage. I haven't run of space to use this feature yet
