Netflix and Chill? More like Netflix and bigger bills - Netflix begins password sharing crackdown and it comes at a cost

Netflix has begun it's password sharing crackdown, and started to send emails to members who are sharing passwords outside their home.

Starting today, we will be sending this email to members who are sharing Netflix outside their household in the United Kingdom.

A Netflix account is for use by one household. Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are – at home, on the go, on holiday – and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices.

We recognise that our members have many entertainment choices. It’s why we continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new films and TV programmes – so whatever your taste, mood or language and whoever you’re watching with, there’s always something satisfying to watch on Netflix

For those that are password sharing, outside their household, you'll start receiving the following email:

Hi [Name]

Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with - your household.
You can easily watch Netflix on the go and when you travel - either on your personal devices or a TV at a hotel or holiday home.
To control how your account is used, you can:

Check who's using your Netflix. Review which devices are signed in to your account. Sign out of devices that shouldn't have access and consider changing your password.

If you want to share Netflix with someone outside your household, you can use these features:
Transfer a profile. Anyone on your account can transfer a profile to a new membership that they pay for.

• Buy an extra member. You can share your Netflix account with someone who doesn't live with you for £4.99/month more.

We know you might have some questions. Our Help Centre has more detailed information for you.

Thank you for choosing Netflix. We appreciate your membership and we look forward to bringing you more great TV programmes and films.

The Netflix team

Can't knock them for enforcing their own rules really - everyone taking the piss but should think they had a free ride for ages!

They spent years promoting password sharing.

Now their growth has slowed, all they can do is nickle and dime their existing members. things will only get worse from here on out.

Finally being an IT geek will be useful. Once every 25days ill create a VPN between the two routers and route traffic out through the main account addresses internet. showing all devices on the main home IP address.
    SK09's avatar
Already done it, created a separate WiFi network that routes traffic through my wan IP.

I find it odd a comment about Plex gets deleted becasue it's deemed off topic yet paying for netflix via a Turkish VPN to get it at a fraction of the cost is perfectly fine and on topic.

Either way, I suspect Netflix must be worried about the implementation of this and will be monitoring closely. (edited)

Well Netflix IS the topic, so that makes sense.

Netflix have jumped the shark now.

Was great when it started, but now every show and movie is the same.

Same types of characters, same situations, same boring political tropes regurgitated.

Even their big movies with big stars feel poorly written and edited. It feels like a paint by numbers type of movie making. If it wasn't for the big stars, they'd feel more like straight to DVD crap of the late 90's. They are just bland - quantity over quality.

    I think it's catch 22 for them.

If new stuff isn't released we'll be moaning that there's nothing new and we're paying money to watch the same rubbish.

They put new stuff out and we say it's all rubbish.

It was great years ago when it was the new thing out but I think it's just peaked

I don't understand the comments throwing the rattle out the pram and screaming "well thats it i'm going to cancel!!"
If you are the one paying literally nothing will change - it's the freeloaders that should be sobbing not the account holders.

They keep having huge load of users abandoning, so they have to keep shifting the goal posts.

They're basically using the same tactic government and big corps use, repeat until people are sick and there's barely any fuss any more.

I dont understand how they will limit multiple households? The only way I see they can do it is by limiting ip addresses but if I want to watch something as I leave the house and switch to 5g, then wifi on the bus, then mcdonalds wifi...
How will they do it other than by trusting you not to share details?
    Gumpy.Joe's avatar
I believe any device linked to your account has to use the i.p address linked to your "Home" every 30 days. Linus did a video on it.

Has anyone done this yet? If I pay £5 a month extra for my brother, can his girlfriend in the same house share his password
    HotAddict's avatar
They can share 1 profile but limited to 1 screen at a time.
  12. johnny_storm's avatar
Today they increased the price of my Turkish account from 93.99 Lira to 130.99. (39% increase) Seems like they are getting very desperate to increase revenue.
    ultrak3wl's avatar
The Lira exchange rate has fallen recently so likely a factor for a US company.

An FYI for anyone who cancelled. Make sure you change your password and log out of any devices before your renewal. Mine renewed yesterday and because my partner watched it, Netflix took that as authorisation to charge me for another month. I just had to go on live chat to get a refund which will take up to 30 days.

They implemented successfully in Spain few months back. They have lost there 1 million subscribers. But they have a plan to get them back again,.. fill the email with emails of the content we are missing.
    UK next target lol.

It's one of my least used services at the moment. Can't honestly remember the last thing I watched on it but at Turkey prices I don't mind keeping it.

I suspect once this charge reaches Turkey, and it likely will, it won't be too horrible. If it's £1-£2 a month then I'll probably keep it, but if it basically doubles in price then I won't.
  18. Els1e's avatar
I keep seeing clips for an Australian show called Mr Inbetween which looked fun. It's not on Netflix but it's really not that difficult to find a way of watching it.

Netflix was the 'go-to' option for TV/Movie streaming and (pretty much), meant I couldn't be bothered to look for alternative methods. But doing things like this, meaning my kids won't be able to use the account that I pay for, all at a time when we're all feeling a financial pinch?

    Farewell Netflix.

Yo ho me hearties, yo ho.

I still don't get one thing.

Why, for god sake, why they do not introduce 4k sub for 1 person for £5/month?

I would be happy to pay that, yet I am "forced" to pay highest sub price because it allows 4 screen.. i have only one 4K TV in my home.
    Westwoodo's avatar
You answered your own point there, you pay for more than you need so why would a big business charge you or anyone less?

    Looool bye Netflix
  21. praevalens's avatar
The quality of the programmes is crap these days. Not watched anything good for months and only kept it as I let my mum use it at hers. Looking forward to cancelling it.

This is a weird thread with so many defending it. Sorry Jeffatemycake46 the Netflix CEO isn’t sat reading your comment on hotukdeals thinking “damn. What a guy!” Instead a lot of people are wondering if you are going to go and defend Tesla or Tesco next.

I wonder if anyone else looked through the thread for jeffatemycake46 and to see how he would respond to this comment

Once this happens in Turkey, the number of subscriptions in that country will fall like 99%
  25. Steve-O.2008's avatar
Had the Email and the Screen and then had my Netflix Cancellation Confirmation Email with reason being selection boxes ticked as cannot share account and too expensive

Hopefully they see a big loss of subscriptions and revert back...

Got the email yesterday when my brother tired to login from his house. I got a notification which I approved, which allowed him to continue watching. Is this all that is required? Or are they going to eventually stop that also after prolonged used from a different location ?
    Conkers816's avatar
I suspect you've basically now authorised this extra charge for password sharing by approving that login request.
  27. dickybow's avatar
Not even worth watching for free. Absolute rubbish

"We know you might have some questions"

Yeah, like where's the cancel subscription button?

We have the top-level Netflix sub for 4K and we essentially don't use it but just let it tick away through habit. Time to just drop them, like we do with every other service that messes us about.
    Paul_Hobbs07's avatar
I pay for the 4k one because my dad and my brother log in to it. I’m now questioning what I actually watch on it.

Seems piracy isn't a bad choice anymore anyway.
    The.Fat.Cat's avatar
    Just what I was thinking.
I currently DL most of the stuff I'm interested in from other streaming services anyway, no problem adding Netflix shows/films to the list.

Just in time before a debit goes out for next month. Result. (edited)
    james2k66's avatar
yeah the result is you dont get to watch netflix which presumably you enoyed before. win i suppose?
  33. Demolitionman78's avatar
Do people think Disney will jump on the bandwagon?
    unreality's avatar
If this isn't a disaster, they'll all copy Netflix new rule.
  34. acm20001's avatar
netflix should never have allowed password sharing in the first place, financially it was silly from the get go but they were desperate to get as many viewers as possible.

stop freeloading and pay up or dont use it, its a simple choice.
    kingkajee's avatar
You pay, I get it for free. Simples
  35. Joign123's avatar
When they introduced this crackdown on password sharing in Canada, they actually GAINED memberships as a result.

They will only get rid of this when people en masse unsubscribe and DON'T return. (edited)
    Faistime's avatar
Or people should stop trying to hoodwink their way out of subs. If you like the service, pay for it. If you don't like it or don't think it's worth it, don't pay. It's not hard really, is it? You're not owed anything!
  36. Batch_2001's avatar
Big shame that the lower tier accounts can't accommodate 2 external users. My mum can't afford Netflix.

Downgrade to 1080 and add one probably for me. I'm the only person in the house that cares about 4k and unlikely to clash on > 2 devices.

How can they know whether it's not someone in your household just watching it at a friend's house? They say you can use it at a hotel, holiday home or on the go so how can they prove the person you're sharing with isn't your brother - who lives with you too - at his holiday home?
  39. cantbRssed1's avatar
Am I the only one that finds it a bit ridiculous that loads of people are complaining and threatening to leave because Netflix are enforcing a condition of contract that was in place since most people signed up for it. You all agreed to not share your accounts, so why the outrage?
    Jon_Snow's avatar
Netflix are enforcing a condition of contract that was in place since most people signed up for it.

Condition they actively encouraged users to circumvent? They touted sharing password as a feature, so of course people are upset when they reverse-uno this. Receipts:
