I think it's worth it if you do all your research (baggage rules, customs, transit visa etc) which Chinese airlines seem to be painfully bad at informing in english. I flew to japan in 2017 with Air China via Beijing with a similar 3 hour layover with similar time flights with no problems. I would recommend flying to Haneda instead of Narita both are great airports but Haneda is a bit closer to the city. As long as your checked baggage is tagged to go through to Tokyo (which should be the norm so you do not need to re-check baggage) you do not also need to apply for a transit visa if your layover in China is less than 24 hours. The changeover customs checks were pretty quick although they are quite strict on batteries and I guess now covid. If you are spreading the layover further then you can apply for a 144 hour transit visa for free. (edited)

Honestly after visiting japan a handful of times just fly direct. It’s probably double this but the hassle it saves you is worth it especially when a 12 hour flight is already killer. Plus you don’t have to worry about transit visas, missing connections etc

China Eastern are not a great airline. Unless you are really tight for money it's worth paying a bit more.

I flew to Tokyo via Moscow on aeroflot about 4 years ago. It was an . . . interesting experience.
    The price - £244 return.

Don't think we'll see those days again.

If you like stress - free travel, a transfer in China is not recommended.

Wouldn't touch flightcatchers - or any other agent owned by Polani - with a bargepole.

ANA are an amazing airline if you’re flying to Japan, BA not so much. Not tried Japan airlines, maybe next time.

I went to osaka back in May with this airline and with a transfer in shanghai. Honestly the airline wasn't as bad as what people say online and I would travel with them again. Worth the £600 saving from flying direct with another airline

How long was the transfer security check in shanghai? Was it just checking your cabin bag and passport and I guess covid stuff?
