How much does an MOT cost? The maximum amount car owners can be charged for their MOT is £54.85, while for motorcycles, the limit is £29.65. That’s because in the UK, the cost of MOTs is regulated by the government.

The amount an MOT costs generally increases depending on the number of passengers transported by the vehicle. MOTs for buses with more than 16 seats that need every seatbelt checking can cost up to £124.50, for instance.

View the government-set maximum MOT test fees here.

What is an MOT?An MOT is a mandatory test that makes sure your car meets environmental, safety and roadworthiness standards. They ensure all cars on the road are passing standards designed to protect people, infrastructure and the wider environment.

An MOT is required three years after your car was first registered and then every year afterwards, on or up to the anniversary of the first MOT test. MOTs have been a legal requirement since 1960.

Do you need an MOT?Every vehicle that’s three years old or over needs an MOT test certificate and you must renew this once a year. If you have a car, it is your responsibility to make sure it is re-examined annually.

In addition to the obvious safety and performance issues, if you don’t have a valid MOT certificate you cannot legally drive your car on the road and you won’t be able to renew your road tax. You also face the risk of being fined up to £1,000 for driving a car that doesn’t have a valid certificate.

If your car is involved in any kind of accident, you could be asked to show your MOT certificate. If you don’t have one, your insurance claim may be affected, especially if an injury is involved.

The DVSA has also computerised the MOT test system. This means mobile camera units and police patrols can check remotely to determine whether there is a valid MOT certificate associated with your car. All of this means it’s highly likely you need an MOT.

Got my Auris MOT done on Thursday after car service from Toyota last week, MOT passed and agent was very honest as he highlighted same issue toyota told about about lower tyre tread in one tyre. Highly recommend Durham branch.

I was very skeptical about this after reading all these comments but my car just passed with 2 advisories - one which I expected.
And for context it’s an old BMW with 156k miles on the clock.
Had mine done in Guildford (edited)

Well done for being specific about the car and identifying the branch, sounds as if the Guildford branch did a straight MOT. Just out of interest, what were the advisories? (edited)

Use the code MOTCLOUD7 to take £7 off the price of an MOT, been using this code for the last few years at Protyre. MOT costs £22.95 with this code

Things to consider with a cheap initial test, what minor issue will they pull you on, there is always adjustments that can be made i.e headlights, handbrake, these things will soon mount up and wipe out any savings made.

Then you need to consider how much a genuine repair will cost, its ok having a cheaper test but to get a free re test the centre need to carry out repairs, so changing brake pads, discs, wiper blades can all be costing alot more than at a local garage wheen you pay £50 for the test and then alot less for labour to rectify any problems.

This is just general comment that I have seen with promotions at Kwik Fit, ATS, halfords etc.. Not aimed at Protyre as never used them (edited)

Never used Protyre before - they alright? And I appreciate no garage chain will ever please everyone but some honest experiences please
    viper668's avatar
Been using their Ashford branch for years, no problems, no up sale. And that's often with using the Groupon voucher for the mot too.

    Excellent! This.

This is a good deal if all Protyre branches do a “straight MOT”. If people can share any experiences, good or bad it would be helpful. If they can also identify the branch it would be even better.

IM also in for a wheel alignment

The protyre in Salisbury is good, I've used them on and off for about 4 years.
  10. Duke_Maximus's avatar
Avoid. They try to up sell. Went for front wheel alignment and required all wheel. Which is ok but to do all wheel there is no discount. So get it done from National Tyre for £37 only.
    Fozzy-90's avatar
    Author
So they never went to upsell, they just corrected the service you actually required (as you booked the wrong one) , you ended up booking a 2 wheel alignment for a car that requires a 4 wheel alignment - which have additional Costs (edited)

I went to Canterbury branch and the car failed MOT. Took it straight to a competitor who said they didn't think it was a failed and passed it.

what did they fail it on?
  12. freddyfender's avatar
Not saying everyone does it but in my experience places doing cheap MOT always come up with a list of things they recommend need doing .
And places that sell cars that do their own MOTs are the opposite! (edited)

Can recommend what they want doesnt mean its going to be done unless its a failure

    |Just got my MOT last week here for £40!!!.

If I could get a time machine for about £10, I'd be quids in.

Protyre is just a franchise isn't it? My local Protyre is the local good value garage. They've never tried to rip me off, are owned privately and care about their reputation.

Only trouble is they're very popular so getting in can be difficult at times.

What I'm saying is - don't just go off the name - it's the garage that owns the franchise that matter. If they're shisters then they will be bad. If they're good, they will be good anyway.

Not bad, But you will already be paying over the top for a Service at the main dealers

There’s something off about MOT “deals”. Any test centre I’ve known are fully booked even at full price, so you have to wonder why they’re doing this. As others have said they’ll likely find a bunch of “recommended repairs” which they will be happy to quote you for.
    Fozzy-90's avatar
    Author
Anyone can quote, but no obligation to take them up on the offer, unless it was going to be a failure
  18. xigent's avatar
Comments from those that have used Protyre for an MOT all seem to be positive so far.

HUKD can be very useful when the comments are specific and from people that have used the service on offer. (edited)

Mine is booked for Tuesday. Serviced by Merc last week and the only issue was the tyres which I’ve sorted. So should sail straight through. Will update next week.
    ashyt16turbo's avatar
Would be interesting to see if they do as that would either make Merc a bunch of robbing bar stools or Protyre finding phantom issues.

Had my MOT on Saturday, Passed with no issues what so ever, Also no extras had been offered for a quick sale

I ain't done MOT since prior to pandemic. My vipor Ford Focus running alright thank u.
  22. ashyt16turbo's avatar
In my experience having used Protyre for tyres and alignment I can't fault my local branch.
They don't try and sell me anything extra, in fact last time they charged me half the price for alignment as they only had to adjust one side. Almost every other garage would have charged full whack regardless.

I know it all depends on the actual centre local to you, but get on good terms with them and use them regularly and you should be good.

If I have 3 months left on the MOT, and I take the car in for MOT today, if it passes I assume the new MOT starts today. But what if it fails, does the old MOT until 3 months later still stands, or do I have to fix the car and get it pass within a certain time frame?
    EndemicAlarm's avatar
3 months is too early to do it early

Got my MOT booked a couple of weeks back for 17 quid using the MOTCLOUD7 voucher. They always have vouchers for money off or cashback on Quidco/TC. In my experience much better than Kwik Fit (not saying much)
  26. Father-Jemima-Racktool's avatar
They're already £25 in Accrington. Nothing new here!
  27. MildmanneredCalvin's avatar
I'd always get my MOT done by the local council that has no vested interest in telling me that I need more work doing to the car. Also was better priced, especially when done with an NHS discount. Normally costs me £35 for years now.
    BattleBeast1's avatar
£30.50 here in N.Ireland, we only have local government test centres, no work is carried out. I prefer it that way tbh. Retest is £20 if done within 21 days of test date and they only check the failed item/s have been rectified.
  28. SoftSack's avatar
What happens if it fails bet there isnt a free retest

Not a bad deal at all, Unless you want to go via the haste of getting the voucher and then needing to call the branch to book it in

I will be getting my MOT at full price from the independent garage I know and trust for years. I don't go near any "offers" like this from chains, they usually get their money back another way. Halfords once charge me for repairs they didn't actually make. Another chain (I forget the name) failed the MOT because the back door wouldn't open - they tried to get me to replace the door with them. The actual problem? Childlock was turned on.
  34. maranthony's avatar
Not sure what these guys are like but in my experience cheap MOT only means you’ll end up with a failed MOT and long list of things snagged, in my case were manufactured by Halfords. But would be interested in finding out what other people have experienced.
  35. honestman1958's avatar
Used the Groupon offer for my MOT at the Portsmouth branch. Including an initial 30 minute delay they completed the MOT in 90 minutes. They came up with some advisories re the rear brake pads wearing and the rear disc being worn which I will check out when I have my annual service early next month. (edited)
