sorted byVideo files are huge. They live on external drives and the NAS. There's no point having a massive SSD when you only need to store the OS and applications locally.
Compared to the 2020 intel iMac with 16gb gpu I use at work (I forget the model number, it was upgraded to the top spec through Apple) this thing outperforms it easily on most tasks, and I am talking about the Max version, not the ultra.
After using it for a year now, here’s my 2 cents for anyone who’s interested:
I use both Macs with Resolve Studio and I get more fps with NR on the M1 Max as it’s better optimised. It breezes through renders because of the encoders and decoders.
Apps like Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe suite work as well as the intel version, I can’t really comment on whether it’s faster or not, but it feels fast. I’ve used After Effects for 20 years and it’s always been ‘that speed’ because Adobe desperately needs to rewrite Premiere and AE as their performance is dismal compared to Resolve/FCP.
I use both macs with Logic, and I’d say the only real difference is the intel version is perhaps slightly more stable on loading plugins. I’ve had a few more instances where one of my Arturia instruments crashes, but I believe that Arturia would be responsible for compatibility issues.
This M1 Mac also has very high quality audio chips, so if you’re into music making then go for it.
I also run VMware Fusion (Beta is now m-series chip and metal compatible) for running some games, along with Crossover. It’s hit and miss with certain games, but generally the games I play work.
Also, with Sonoma DX12 games will be becoming more and more compatible because Apple are encouraging more gaming on Macs by releasing the Porting Toolkit (basically Crossover with DX12 compatibility).
Additionally, to those complaining about system SSD storage; 512gb is plenty for all the apps I use and as a system drive.
If you’re producing any video or music content and keep all your media on your system drive then regardless of OS, you’ll end up having a bad time.
And at very least have your project files in iCloud,
There are 2 main methods to connect larger storage volumes via thunderbolt and 10 gig Ethernet. We paid more for the iMac to have the 10 gig Ethernet, this comes as standard I believe. You can easily scrub through a timeline of RAW footage with it.
This thing has so many thunderbolt and type-c ports that fast storage expansion is a perfectly viable option.
I use T7 SSDs at work to backup dailies and they’re super fast and super affordable. I’ve surprised clients by being able to hand a day’s worth of ARRI RAW files to them on a backed up drive before they get on the train, so they CAN be used professionally.
GET THEM. I have my 2TB music drive with sample libraries on there and I’ve never experienced a slowdown in Logic. No buffer issues, nada.
I do sometimes bring work home and continue as if I’m connected to the main NAS with the T7s.
All in all a brilliant machine that uses so little power I leave it on all the time and even during the hottest day last year (40C) never went above a whisper on the fans under a heavy load.
At that logic you could say low spec 256GB is enough, it's just an o/s and application drive right...
I just picked up the M2 Max version for £1890 with Education Discount from the Apple Store last week, but if I had been a choice between that and this deal the £400 Saving would have been tempting for just the 10 to 15% less performance over the M2
Both are so much better than the Mac Mini Pro, the 32Gb Ram does make a big difference on a Pro machine and as stated 512Gb is not big deal as all media etc is on External NVME Drives (Have 6Tb on mine) for less than the cost of upgrading from 512Gb to 1Tb at apple prices.
Although it was supposed to be my machine She Who Must BE Obeyed seems to have snatched it away to use in her office as her main editing machine alongside an M2 Air Laptop (edited)
I doubt Argos stocked these in huge numbers to start with, they're quite niche.
BTW the main Clearance Bargains stores are Corby, Stanley and Walsall (not Dudley). There is also a furniture shop in Darlington with a limited range of technology and a tiny one in West Brom which is a waste of time unless you happen to be in West Brom. Walsall tends to have the lowest prices in my experience.
For me, I have had 5-6 macs, and now my 2 macs run linux. I find it incredible that Apple do not permit (even apple...) memory upgrades on the Studio. The walled garden does give performance and reliability, but it is definitely more of price gouge than for customer benefit.
If you do mean Logic Pro then yes this is very very good for using that software. (edited)
If it was 1k, I'd definitely see that as the price to performance no brainer.. But if this is powerful enough for you, seems a very good deal, as the used prices seem about the same..
Please correct my assumptions if I'm wrong
As someone just getting started in video editing, I'm sorely tempted but unsure I can invest in it (and a good monitor for it) right now.
if you can live with the basic pro Mac mini and don’t do any upgrades it’s good value but as soon as you push upgrade on any part of it the Studio just works out way better in its base spec
if you are going to game on it the Studio is steers ahead as you are staring with 30 Gpu cores compared to 16 in the base Pro chip or 19 in the fully specced Pro chip
And yes… boot drive size is pretty meaningless… have had a 1tb drive in Mac Pro for years and defo have never used for anything other than desktop folders.
If I hadn't bought it I'd definitely pursue this deal, although I'm suspicious of Argos deals from the number of times I've turned up to be told there's no stock
