    Video editor here.

Video files are huge. They live on external drives and the NAS. There's no point having a massive SSD when you only need to store the OS and applications locally.

I have had one of these for a year and agree that anyone who makes content can totally appreciate this machine.

Compared to the 2020 intel iMac with 16gb gpu I use at work (I forget the model number, it was upgraded to the top spec through Apple) this thing outperforms it easily on most tasks, and I am talking about the Max version, not the ultra.

After using it for a year now, here’s my 2 cents for anyone who’s interested:

I use both Macs with Resolve Studio and I get more fps with NR on the M1 Max as it’s better optimised. It breezes through renders because of the encoders and decoders.

Apps like Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe suite work as well as the intel version, I can’t really comment on whether it’s faster or not, but it feels fast. I’ve used After Effects for 20 years and it’s always been ‘that speed’ because Adobe desperately needs to rewrite Premiere and AE as their performance is dismal compared to Resolve/FCP.

I use both macs with Logic, and I’d say the only real difference is the intel version is perhaps slightly more stable on loading plugins. I’ve had a few more instances where one of my Arturia instruments crashes, but I believe that Arturia would be responsible for compatibility issues.
This M1 Mac also has very high quality audio chips, so if you’re into music making then go for it.

I also run VMware Fusion (Beta is now m-series chip and metal compatible) for running some games, along with Crossover. It’s hit and miss with certain games, but generally the games I play work.
Also, with Sonoma DX12 games will be becoming more and more compatible because Apple are encouraging more gaming on Macs by releasing the Porting Toolkit (basically Crossover with DX12 compatibility).

Additionally, to those complaining about system SSD storage; 512gb is plenty for all the apps I use and as a system drive.
If you’re producing any video or music content and keep all your media on your system drive then regardless of OS, you’ll end up having a bad time.
And at very least have your project files in iCloud,

There are 2 main methods to connect larger storage volumes via thunderbolt and 10 gig Ethernet. We paid more for the iMac to have the 10 gig Ethernet, this comes as standard I believe. You can easily scrub through a timeline of RAW footage with it.

This thing has so many thunderbolt and type-c ports that fast storage expansion is a perfectly viable option.

I use T7 SSDs at work to backup dailies and they’re super fast and super affordable. I’ve surprised clients by being able to hand a day’s worth of ARRI RAW files to them on a backed up drive before they get on the train, so they CAN be used professionally.

GET THEM. I have my 2TB music drive with sample libraries on there and I’ve never experienced a slowdown in Logic. No buffer issues, nada.

I do sometimes bring work home and continue as if I’m connected to the main NAS with the T7s.

All in all a brilliant machine that uses so little power I leave it on all the time and even during the hottest day last year (40C) never went above a whisper on the fans under a heavy load.

Apple direct aren’t selling the Mac Studio with M1 Max any more. I wanted to compare the price
    Stitch123's avatar
Pretty sure it was £1889 as that’s the price shown on the apple refurb site where these turn up for £1609.

1 tb should be starting size of SSD on any computer. Anything else is useless for storage as who wants to use plug in drives? (edited)
    rs_tigerblade's avatar
All I do is use plug in drives, even 8tb wouldn’t be enough for me.. it’s a system drive.. it doesn’t need to be more than 512gb
  4. Darthballs's avatar
Lmao at the justification for the "measly" 512GB drive

At that logic you could say low spec 256GB is enough, it's just an o/s and application drive right...
    rs_tigerblade's avatar
    Correct

    Good Deal,

I just picked up the M2 Max version for £1890 with Education Discount from the Apple Store last week, but if I had been a choice between that and this deal the £400 Saving would have been tempting for just the 10 to 15% less performance over the M2

Both are so much better than the Mac Mini Pro, the 32Gb Ram does make a big difference on a Pro machine and as stated 512Gb is not big deal as all media etc is on External NVME Drives (Have 6Tb on mine) for less than the cost of upgrading from 512Gb to 1Tb at apple prices.

Although it was supposed to be my machine She Who Must BE Obeyed seems to have snatched it away to use in her office as her main editing machine alongside an M2 Air Laptop (edited)

It should work. I tried it about an hour ago and was working. I also tried it on the M1 Max Studio too (at £1499) but that didn’t work.

    Will this play Crysis?

Why would you want to watch a computer play games for you?

Going to start a watch on the Argos Clearance Stores in Corby and Dudley, most of the discounted Apple stock ends up there after a couple of months at a high discount, good chance these will end up under £1k if they hit the Clearance Stores.
    WillPS's avatar
Never seen a Mac Studio in any of the Clearance Bargains I've been to. Not to say it doesn't happen but I do go a fair bit.

I doubt Argos stocked these in huge numbers to start with, they're quite niche.

BTW the main Clearance Bargains stores are Corby, Stanley and Walsall (not Dudley). There is also a furniture shop in Darlington with a limited range of technology and a tiny one in West Brom which is a waste of time unless you happen to be in West Brom. Walsall tends to have the lowest prices in my experience.
  12. kestrel1960's avatar
Excellent price. I’d be all over this if I hadn’t invested in the Mac Mini. Heated.
  13. hotdealsuk1973's avatar
yep have to agree you don't need oodles of internal storage on these its overkill would it be a nice bonus if it did of course it would but its not necessary as external storage is much cheaper and bigger than ever before.
  14. marty101's avatar
Not for me, not a MacOS fan. But really excited to see Apple ramp up the competition with their M-series chips, well done 🍏
  15. jzedward's avatar
firstly, good deal for this device, thanks op. voted hot

For me, I have had 5-6 macs, and now my 2 macs run linux. I find it incredible that Apple do not permit (even apple...) memory upgrades on the Studio. The walled garden does give performance and reliability, but it is definitely more of price gouge than for customer benefit.
    gump1031's avatar
Memory upgrades I can kind of get as its a SOC like in a tablet or phone where its all on one chip. But the fact that they restrict the SSD so you can't upgrade it is a joke.
  16. rs_tigerblade's avatar
    Absolutely insane deal. Bought.

Good value considering people 3-4 years ago people were paying £2000+ for used 2013 Mac Pro's that were 5+ years old (edited)
  19. PuffDaCat's avatar
Is this any good for Logic Pro X?
    fishmaster's avatar
Logic Pro X is a 2013 - 2019 DAW. The latest version 2020 onwards is called Logic Pro. If you are talking about Logic Pro X then you want to upgrade as using up to 10 year old software on a system like this would be extremely inefficient if it works.

If you do mean Logic Pro then yes this is very very good for using that software. (edited)

Yeah this is a great deal. You aint getting a pc with 10gb ethernet and 6 thunderbolt ports for cheap. Not to mention all the headaches.
    mr_johnsie's avatar
More headaches with a Mac lol
  22. Mushstaffy's avatar
Very tempted, but thinking it's a logical discount , given that the new max 2 is £2k and has a supposed 25% performance upgrade.. so fairly apples for apples..

If it was 1k, I'd definitely see that as the price to performance no brainer.. But if this is powerful enough for you, seems a very good deal, as the used prices seem about the same..

Please correct my assumptions if I'm wrong
  23. Paul534's avatar
Excellent deal but I'm wondering how this would compare to a M3 Pro Mac Mini rumoured to be coming in October. I think Studio will beat it in mulitcore performance but M3 should be significantly faster in single core due to 3nm chips. M3 should also have few additional perks like HDMI 2.1 and AVC1 encoder/decoder.
    plewis00's avatar
I seriously doubt anyone is going to call this machine slow even if the M3 Pro is faster (it will also cost a lot more and probably worse value per £/performance).
  24. plewis00's avatar
Seems like a good choice of machine, 32GB RAM is sufficient for almost everyone and vastly cheaper than other Mac products. It would be a tough sell to buy the Mac Pro or iMac over this.
    perplexedme's avatar
What screen though? (to do it justice)
  25. SpudUK's avatar
The wording implies that this could be the new permanent/RRP price.

As someone just getting started in video editing, I'm sorely tempted but unsure I can invest in it (and a good monitor for it) right now.
  26. calILX's avatar
I got a refurb for £1200 using the Apple F&F discount. Amazing machine, totally worth the money if you’re buying it for work/productivity reasons. The power in a tiny box is crazy
  27. MrStebone's avatar
Torn between this or the m2 pro Mac mini. Primarily it would be used for Xcode and a bit of gaming on the side via crossover. Any advice?
    Stageshoot's avatar
Problem with the Mac Mini Pro is that if you upgrade it to the full cpu (which still has 11 cpu cores and a device engine less than the M1 Max and upgrade the ram to 32gb and the networking to 10gb it’s £100 more than the Max Studio

if you can live with the basic pro Mac mini and don’t do any upgrades it’s good value but as soon as you push upgrade on any part of it the Studio just works out way better in its base spec

if you are going to game on it the Studio is steers ahead as you are staring with 30 Gpu cores compared to 16 in the base Pro chip or 19 in the fully specced Pro chip
  28. yellowpony's avatar
Amazing. Thanks! Missed out last time.

And yes… boot drive size is pretty meaningless… have had a 1tb drive in Mac Pro for years and defo have never used for anything other than desktop folders.
  29. Stitch123's avatar
Going round in circles with this. Was eyeing up the M2 pro mini but it’s so close to price of this.  I use mainly DR Studio and even my current M1 Air will perform some tasks such as magic mask faster than my rtx3070 in my PC and timeline itself is smoother.  Was waiting to see what M3 brings but this feels like an opportunity. But then for this price I could upgrade my PC further. Decision decisions….
    yellowpony's avatar
I got this due to my M1 Air bring sooooo good at DR Studio. Looking forward to seeing what this can do later in the week. DR is just so well optimised for macs.

I was lucky enough to get a used one of these recently, with the Touch ID keyboard for £1400. Amazing machine.

If I hadn't bought it I'd definitely pursue this deal, although I'm suspicious of Argos deals from the number of times I've turned up to be told there's no stock

Can someone help me out. I have a macbook M1 Pro 16gb 512gb. I'm using video editing software, FINAL cut, Topaz AI. Would this result in a bump in performance for me? Yes I get it has 16gb more ram, not fussed about HD as I'll plug in my recently purchased NVME but the processor will it offer a significant boost? Laptop is plugged into a monitor... Thanks. (edited)

M2 base is more powerful than M1 Max or equivalent a maybe that’s why is cheap. Plus the form factor, there is a lot of empty space inside, Apple should come up with an updated case in M3.
