Just so that buyers are aware - you cannot upgrade the 256GB storage, it is fixed and soldered with no expansion slots. For most people that should be enough storage and you can always use external or cloud storage.

Confirmed by bazman28 purchased and opened it that the storage is not upgradable

hotukdeals.com/com…309

Just to add

  • MEMORY (RAM) is fixed can't be increased from the 8GB
  • RAM is confirmed as DDR4 not DDR5
  • The UK version doesn't seem to have the backlit keyboard even if the manual mentions it

Picked it up a few hours ago these are my opinions.
    Pro’s
    Beautiful bright screen
Great looking laptop looks premium and more expensive
Very fast will be good for everyday browsing, work and movies etc
    Good speakers clear sound
    Cons
Trackpad isn’t great a bit jumpy
    Fan gets a little noisy

This is definitely worth the price 100% regardless of the ram situation. (edited)

    Keyboard with no backlight?
  2. Broke's avatar
wow, amazing price. would anyone confirm if the RAM is upgradeable

    I have just been looking.

    No, it is not.

I have a decent spec PC at home, as well as Tab S8+ for any streaming needs, but for some reason I want to add a laptop to the collection, anyone have a good enough reason to justify buying one of these?
    mossmanfly's avatar
Before you saw this deal, did you want to add a laptop to your collection?

Yes, it's probably £150-200 (Edit: Previous Argos price was £449 according to Google so £160 cheaper) cheaper than it should be, but will you actually use it, or is it £290 for something that's not going to be used.

I have an Asus OLED Ryzen 5 version similar spec, though 512Gb and CPU/GPU marginally better according to CPU comparisons. I did consider it as I've seen it, but I only have the need for 1 laptop. So, while yes, technically, you are saving money over other retailers, but I'd still be paying £290 on something I don't actually need and is no better than I've already got. If my laptop was a lot worse, and this was a deal that appeared when I changed my 7 year old laptop 18 months ago, then I'd have snapped it up.

Unfortunately, with deals like this that are really good, we all get the FOMO and try and justify or just buy it anyway. (edited)

    Looks nice silver finish
The keyboard is grey and stands out against the silver - backlit keys would have looked good
The bezel is 0.5cm and the screen is glossy but the oled colours are vibrant and sharp and it's bright not tried outside yet
Charger is not that heavy or a big block

Found using on bedding The fans kick in often as the vents are underneath

Trackpad is smooth and usable, mine is clicky (edited)

Ordered via employers voucher scheme that gives me 6% off so only cost me £277 with same day delivery.
    BaelinTheFisherman's avatar
was gonna do that as well but in case they cancel for misprice I didn't bother in the end. Happened to me once with monitors in argos, they cancelled my same day collection and was stuck with argos voucher for few months

Sorry it's not in English - he posts some benchmarks towards the end

You can see webcam and speakers in use

He renders a 2min 4K video in about 5mins in Premiere
Shows him doing some Photoshop editing
Plays GTA 5 at 720p low settings = states not a gaming machine
His version has backlit keyboard the Argos (UK ) version does not, also his is the 512Gb SSD which can be removed, the 256Gb according to Asus website is a UFS 2.1 (like mobile storage) and no expansion port

I do heavy work on my i7 skylake which is similar to this CPU - i do have 32Gb ram and old Nvidia dedicated GPU

My daughter has an i3-8 gen with 8Gb ram and she is able to use it for her studies and this has a bonus of an OLED screen (edited)
    bazman28's avatar
Yep I can confirm this about the UFS storage I just took the back cover off and checked there is no nvme slot
  7. EazyDuz's avatar
    I3 is very slowwww
    Gary29's avatar
i3 isn’t slow at all. I’m still using a 7th generation i3 and run 3 screens comfortably and 4 through an additional Dell dock. Coupled with an Nvme 1TB and 12GB of RAM, I built this PC six years ago and still running as fast as it was when I first built it. Granted I’m not running intensive games etc. but for a work PC and movies etc, and your daily average needs, it’s absolutely spot on! Handles video rendering also without issue, slow but it does it. So saying i3’s are slow is just factually incorrect.
  8. gyjlaw's avatar
Why is it having only 90 degrees viewing angle despite an OLED display
    MIDURIX's avatar
A 90 degree viewing angle is the best you can have. It means you can see it from any angle. If you viewed a TV from over 90 degrees you would in fact be standing behind the TV, and you would be viewing 0% of what's on the TV.

    8% Plutus debit card cashback
    1% Quidco cashback
    1/2% nectar points

If it all tracks (Quidco and curve pending) then it's £241.30 great deal, been waiting ages for a good laptop deal and got a great one! (edited)

This my friends is a lesson and a crash course masters degree in marketing, whoever did this is a genius.

    A very basic laptop
    budget processor
    Soldiered unupgradeable ssd
    Soldieries unupgradeable ram
USB c that doesn’t do display
    Usb c that u can’t charge
    DDR 4 not 5
    Usb 2 not even 3
    Basic mouse track
    Plastic laptop body
For all intents and purposes it’s a very budget laptop with no upgrade path or any flexibility
Stick on the cheapest oled screen, put the word oled on the header and it’s flying out of the shops and got 2500 heat on here signalling bargain of the week or month even!

It’s like getting the most basic car and putting on it a shiney special edition paint.

For £289 it is still a bargain for 90% of people, who have a laptop for 2 or 3 years and then replace it with a new one. The 10% who like to fiddle and take things to pieces know it is not a suitable laptop from for them.
The ASUS approach on this laptop is not a lot different to what Apple have been doing for years, that the fashion sheep pay thousands for.

NB: the screen is stunning, typing on the laptop now.
  11. Leonh's avatar

It is perfect for those tasks.
  14. stec77's avatar
Posters are saying the storage is not upgradable! How is this possible? What sort of storage does this laptop take? Thanks in advance.
    Nerdowl's avatar
As per comments here seems it's UFS 2.1 which is a) what's normally used in mobile phones and b) soldered to the motherboard like the RAM.
  15. Manonthemon's avatar
Picked mine up today. Really lovely machine for the price. Well built, thin and light (I appreciate the smal charging brick too!). The screen is quite stunning. The keyboard is spacious and pleasure to type on. The whole thing is pretty snappy for the usual browsing and office and I barely hear the fans. Sure it would be nice to have a fingerprint scanner/windows hello camera and a backlit keyboard, but these are no deal breakers. First impressions are really quite fantastic.
    fizz's avatar
The keyboard is really nice to type with - also like that they have a LED in cap lock key as some keybaords dont tbut for some reason no LED for NUM LOCK.
There is also plenty of wrist space for typing. (edited)

How is this in terms of speed CPU?
    The.Fat.Cat's avatar
It's actually pretty decent for what is now 'low end'.
    8 E cores at 1.8Ghz, 3.8Ghz max turbo.

Those cores are equivalent to something like the i7 6700HQ cores, but that was a 4 core CPU compared to the 8 on this (this has no hyperthreading though).

Hard to do a proper comparison without much info about the performance of the CPU, but here's the passmark scores compared to an i5 8600 -

What is Windows 11 S Mode?
    northerngeek's avatar
you can only install apps from the Microsoft store I think. You can remove the s-mode but to get it back you have to do a full reinstallation of Windows. s-mode only comes with Windows 11 Home.

8 Ram this day and age is an issue, its a decent processor and its an amazing (Oled) screen, why suffocate it it with 8 ram and yes it does suffocate it, if you even open too many tabs or files. And it deems the laptop short life, another 2-3 years and its 8 ram will be todays 4 ram, which is good for nothing, incredible waste. Easily a 6-7 years office laptop reduced to 2-3 years life span and limited use today
    jumbosausage's avatar
Certainly won't 'suffocate' it and 8gb ram will handle multiple tabs and apps with ease. If you have demanding needs then no this is not for you.
  19. Broke's avatar
Same here, non upgradeable just kills it
    Smoggy1970's avatar
    Hardly.
  20. uklee90's avatar
Just picked up with the intention of upgrading it and realised you cannot upgrade the ram or the ssd on this model so will be going back tomorrow
  21. InDaHouse's avatar
    Great deal!

For me, I’ve decided not to pickup the collection and just get the refund, for these reasons below for ME:

    No Card Reader
    No Backlit keyboard
Cannot upgrade RAM - apps regularly update too not just windows
Probably can swap out with larger storage but looks painful.

But it REALLY is a great price and OLED machine for Webing and YouTubing and Vidoes for that use, and I’m sure a bit more.

Look forward to the reviews HERE 😃

I3-N305 and i5-1135G7 are very similar in CPU performance. But i5 handily beats the i3 in GPU performance (G7 80 EU’s versus UHD 32 EU’s)
    Chz's avatar
Just isn't true, except for very heavily threaded workloads. This i3 has twice as many cores running half as fazt. For most purposes, it's a lot poorer experience.
  23. dealfiend101's avatar

  24. elbs's avatar
good price but note the N305 is the lowest-level i3 processor and pretty poor. no hyperthreading, not even dual channel memory support.

performance similar to inferior Pentium processors, and that's saying something.

that + non-upgradeable make it a hard sell for me personally, but for the price maybe acceptable

How would this be for a budding 11yr old youtuber who likes some casual gaming on laptop? Would it do the trick?
    SteamerDecker's avatar
It won’t play most games from the last 5-10 years at all. I use Xbox Game Pass on PC and out of the hundreds of games on there, there are only a handful or so that will play comfortably on this. In terms of gaming performance, even if just casually gaming, there are much better options out there in the same kind of price range. This one is more for video streaming (the OLED screen is gorgeous) and general web browsing.

I have a laptop with a Ryzen 5 2500u CPU, it is a very good processor and is still nippy, generally AMD processors handle graphics quicker than Intel processors.

Given the choice I would always by a Ryzen CPU over an equivalent Intel i Series CPU, based on my real experience of using both. (edited)

Use the ASUS One tools to configure the laptop

If you use normal keyboard screen dimming you will get a flickering screen, may induce headaches in some people, the ASUS One tool version minimises the flicker.

Also, there are color calibration options, OLED protection and battery health options

Got one waiting at a store - can someone confirm for sure:

    1. RAM cannot be added to SLOT 2 so stuck with 8GB forever? (dealbreaker)

    2. SSD cannot be upgraded... is it not nvme / m2 etc?? (dealbreaker)

If the above is true, this laptop lacks potential, and will only will be great for those browsing/office apping etc....oh and I'm sure screen will look fab...

I'm sure another 50-80£ more, another one with expandability options could be had..... (edited)

Did anyone else go for this deal from Amazon? Came in at £402!? With 30% off for used new!:

I’ve ordered this model for £112 more than the OPs deal! I don’t think I’m going to collect my original order from Argos! Unfortunately the Amazon deal won’t be delivered until Wednesday and Argos will only hold there deal till Wednesday aswell unless Amazon delivers early!

With the Amazon model, there could be some fault so I’ll have to test it thoroughly although I’m not sure how to do that!? Thanks in advance. (edited)
