£300 budget gaming Pc

Hi All,

Asking for a friend.

They want to get their nipper their first PC which is capable of playing some games. I’ve made him aware for that budget don’t expect miracles, and said probably aiming for games with low specs or older ones.

Ive had a look and I’m a bit stumped what to suggest for that amount.

Any suggestions?

There is a huge difference between a PC that can play games and a gaming PC. Anything that can run Windows can play games. On a £300 budget you should be able to play a lot of games, just nothing current (like Fortnite). Worth noting that £300 is about the going rate for just the graphics card in a gaming PC.

I am thinking of selling a new build with an old i5 8500 & a GTX 1070 for about £250-£300 which will play fortnite at over 100fps at 1080p & 1440 at 85fps that also supports VR. (edited)

Go second hand. Tell me your approx postcode and I can look on gumtree. I sell pcs that price range and you can deffo play a lot more than Fortnite these days on the used market for that!

Amazing, thank you. Guildford, GU. I figured second hand was no doubt the best route to go, just not sure what would be the best to expect for that price.

AMD has a range of CPUs with built-in graphics. Thus saving the expense of having to purchase a graphics card, the list of the CPU models is here amd.com/en/…ics

Check out each model by goggling the CPU model/price, then go on to YouTube with each CPU model to see various games running on the CPUs to gauge performance. You could always do a search on eBay, again using the CPU model number to do a search, you may be able to pickup a second user/refurbished PC for a good price. (edited)

An older office style PC, with a GPU dropped in ensuing it has an SSD. I've just done one a similar one for a colleague, got an i7-4770 based HP machine (£68), added another 8GB RAM (for £11) and an SSD (£22), and dropped in a GTX 1650 (£65) and a decent refurbish 24" 1080p monitor for £40.

Obviously they look pretty pants, but you can still find some way tarting them up a bit with LED strips etc.

For that price? Steam Deck. With the release of the OLED, the low-end LCD model should easily be sub-£300. Get a cheap USB-C dongle and you can hook it up to a monitor, plug in a keyboard/mouse, and away you go.

Aye, that was my first thought too. The 64Gb LCD is £309. Or the 256Gb refurbished option is £279, but they've been out of stock for a while.

As you say, a USB C 7 in 1 or similar will allow everything else to plug into it, and he'll be set for a huge range of games. I'm hoping to convince my son to do the same next year, he's moving towards gaming PC's but if I can get him into the Steam Deck on a screen with keyboard and mouse I reckon he'll be happy.

Don't know if this helps - £280 but you'd need to add an OS to it.

TBH. As others have said, you'd probably be better going the second hand route, as you'll probably get a better spec. (edited)
