Process of putting private plate on a car?

Sorry if that's a dumb question, but it's the first time that I am doing this. I have recently purchased a private plate from dvla and I have received the v750 document.

As far as I am aware, I now need to assign it to my vehicle and get the plates made. However, how should I approach this? Should I first make the plates and then fill in the application online when I get physical plates (since application says that details update immediately) or should I first make the application, wait for the new v5c and then make plates and put on the vehicle?

Again, sorry if it's a dumb question, but it's not very clear from the v750 guide thingie and last thing I would like to do is getting pulled over a wrong reg plate Thanks!

And keep the old plates - so you can put them back on the car if you register to transfer your personalised plates to another car in future.

The idea behind keeping the old plates is that when it comes time say get rid of the car, when you transfer your private plate back to being on retention there is a very good chance that you’ll get your old reg no back to put on the car. Keeping the old just means you then don’t have to get new plates made.

Either way is fine. Obviously better to have the plates ready as the transfer is now done straight away online.

And carry copies of the transfer documentation for a while just in case the ANPR systems work off a different database or have not caught up

Make the plates, when you do the process online you should put the plates on immediately (and inform your insurance company!).

And no such thing as a dumb question. If you don't know, you don't know.

Everything is online and can be done very simply; I should have done it straight off with my new car rather than waiting.

They send a temporary document that lasts 3 days so that you can get your new plates done. My old car then got back its original registration and the plates were still in the basement, so an easy job (getting the old plates off wasn't, so I could not reuse those).
