Full fibre (Youfibre) installation what to expect on the day

After being a Virgin Media customer for over twenty years, I finally decided to switch to Youfibre and having it installed next week.

Since we haven't had a BT line since the 90s, we no longer even have a connection to the pole, so I imagine they do that first, I thought this had to be done separately by BT/Openreach rather than the Youfibre installers, though was told everything is happening on the same day

It's the actual installation in and outside the house I'm concerned about. Reading some general info I believe there is a box installed outside the house on the wall that takes the fibre feed and then another one on the inside that outputs a connection for the router (via ethernet?).

What rooms do they need access to for installation, or else is it typically installed in the homes passage/corridor by the front door where one might traditionally have a landline phone?

I think that would be the easiest set up for us as it needs minimal entry, but the issue with that is it effectively means everything has to go over wifi, as it's going to be very difficult getting ethernet runs into the rooms where things such as consoles, PC, set top boxes etc actually are. Everything we have is wifi capable but it's rarely the best option for latency etc, though might be worth a try for simplicity of install especially if the router has decent wifi power and range?

Also we only have one mains outlet in the passage, so they might have to split it as I read the fibre box and router are both separate powered devices? If the connection from the fibre box to the router is just standard ethernet then we might just have the install in the easiest place, which is the passage, so no rooms disturbed with install and then can always move the router ourselves later, if needed.

Would be really glad to hear general installation experiences of full fibre and thoughts on the optimal place for the router and other concerns I've raised.

    I'm getting full fibre through an OpenReach using ISP (sky) tomorrow. They ran the cable to the house a couple of weeks ago, which then drops to a box on the outside of the house. Tomorrow, they need access to where we want the internal box to go, where they'll drill a hole in the wall. As to where that is, that's up to us to decide, with discussion with the people who turn up to do the work.

    In our case, that would mean either an upstairs room at the back of the house, but more likely the living room at the front of the house - in which case, they run the fibre round the side of the house to the entry point. Part of me says this is where I should get the router sited as near to the middle of the house as possible. Another part of me says it's easier just to get it near the current master socket.

    I would put it where there is least drilling / work required. Extending wifi range is relatively easier.

    We had full fibre installed a couple of years ago by Litfibre. They stuck the box low down on the outside wall, then drilled through and connected the fibre box, which they attached to the inside wall. Unfortunately, we had to have the router next to it, which meant the back end of the house was nowhere near the router. So I spent the next week lifting floorboards and routing cat5 cables to be able to have the router connected in the next room so it was more central. They might be able to run cables through to where you want the router put, but they won't be taking up flooring, so it will probably be clipped around the skirting or ceiling.

    I've had YouFibre now for a few years.
    They used the telegraph poles to run a line down our street, then when they installed in my house they took a line from the pole to the house and then installed the main Fibre router box on my living room wall behind the wall unit.
    Then you get a cable from that to your wifi router, mine just sits on to of the unit.
    I have ran a cable from that into my conservatory, I just wanted it that way then I have got 3 Aero Boxes which gives my wifi all over my home and even into my mancave, I do not think they use Aero boxes anymore I think they have changed.
    You will not regret getting it, its the best thing I ever did and they make sure that there is no mess in your home.

    Make sure they put the box inside near an electrical socket to power the router used to be a pain back in the day when the old phone line socket was at the opposite side of the hall to where the power was.

    Thankfully I do have a mains socket in the passage where we had the phone (when we had a landline).

    It is also quite central too so should be good for getting WiFi signal all over house. However, the problem is it would be difficult to use any of the ethernet ports without running long cables and drilling holes to get them to my devices which are mainly in the two downstairs living rooms

    The VM router always sat in the back living room, which was perfect for connecting wired devices but never gave a great signal in some corners, but saying that the hub 5 was a lot better and pretty much eliminated WiFi dead spots despite not being centrally located.... (edited)

    I was the same having been with VM forever, but the service I received was excellent and all seems great so far (getting 400 via WiFi on a 900 fibre)

    Also, just called VM to arrange disconnection but they need 30 days to action it. I didn't consider that when booking Youfibre installation as that is next Tuesday, which I think is too early as it's nearly a month overlap?

    I might try and push the Youfibre installation back if they will. Should say a week overlap allows time to fix any issues there might be with the Youfibre installation?

    I nearly did the same... Then ended up the other way and had no broadband for 3 days

    be careful rearranging your installation, the next date you get may not overlap at all, and you could then be without any access to the internet at all for however long... personally I would rather pay the extra money than be without service.
    Not saying it would definitely be like this, I'm just saying be careful rearranging.

    Thanks for the warning but I was able to rearrange Youfibre to 5th April while VM disconnection is 13th so should be enough overlap still, worst case I could use mobile BB from my phone for a bit, I have 5g so it's more than fast enough for a temporary fix...
