Need a car that's low road tax as will be unable do many miles currently as I am my Wife's full time carer. Finding tax rates confusing..

A Skoda Superb (2015/ 2021) is my preferred car but I am unable to make any sence of what road tax is payable on different years/ models.
Please can anyone help me/us as I am in my late 70s.
Many thanks in anticipation,
Roger.

If you're OK with apps, then download Vehiclesmart.
Then go to the Autotrader website and look at cars you are interested in. Copy the registration into the app and it will tell you the tax bracket. This way you can differentiate between different models
2017+ could be expensive for tax
Example, a 2017 diesel is classed as 114g and is in category C. Because of the change in band rates, the rate is £210 gov.uk/veh…es But had the same car been registered in 2016 it would cost £35

Many thanks Pal. This is exactly the kind of info that I need!
I was brought up in an era where all cars paid the same tax.

    Some only cost £20!

VEEEERY confusing to me and It will probably the last car I will buy as I have owned my current car for 14 years.

    Thanks again Bud.

If she is that bad you can get a Blue Badge & a refund on car tax.

You can apply for exemption from paying vehicle tax if you get the: higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance ( DLA ) enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment ( PIP ) enhanced rate mobility component of Adult Disability Payment ( ADP )" (edited)

We have a blue badge so I will ask my children to enquire about road tax exemption.

Many thanks for your invaluable advise Pal,

    Roger.

The way the 2001 VED system was intended to work was that cars that consumed less fuel and thus had less exhaust CO2 paid less tax.

In 2017 it was changed to a flat rate dependant on fuel type. There's also an extra tax for the first six years of the car's life for cars over £40k list price.

For 2001-2016 cars there's a big drop in tax at CO2 values that correspond to over 54mpg for petrol engines and 62mpg for diesel engines, from £150 to £35.

Around about 2006-2007 car manufacturers started gaming the tests and coming up with results that were technically valid but didn't actually reflect the real world emissions/fuel consumption. Unfortunately nothing was done to curb this for a decade. So you had heavy cars with huge engines qualifying for much lower tax rates than they should have, which is why they also have unrealistic fuel consumption figures attached to them, often 10-20mpg higher than real world reports.

I assume you're after a small petrol engine if this is only for occasional use and it looks like there was a 148bhp in 2016 that qualifies for the £35 tax band, although diesel was more popular then so there aren't many of them about (e.g. 7 listed nationally on autotrader).

    WOW! Thanks for that info.
I have an 06 plate Accord Ex Tourer with a 2.2 diesel engine which I have achieved over 60 M.P.G. under perfect (though fully loaded conditions). which I have owned for 14 years.
Finding a cost effective replacement is proving problematic.
    Thanks for caring.
    Roger.

Auto trader will filter cars based on road tax cost I thought

Yeah was just going to say this. If you only want to pay up to say £35 loads of cars are in that bracket like my 2.0 litre Astra, my mams little 1.5 Suzuki Swift is £200, totally baffles me how her cars smaller, 100bhp less and costs more!

Thanks but I prefer a little more luxury and space for our last car than what mobility cars offer and I do very few miles.

Download an mot check app, that will provide car tax details for each car as long as you know the number plate.

It is the exceptions like yours that I need to look for not the £180 " RULE".
I wonder how many people have brought cars without ( which is what I am trying to avoid) the unexpected rocketing cost of of tax and insurance that I am experiencing?
I do not know the Skoda Wagon 3?
    Thanks for the reply Mate.

If your wife is disabled, you can get free car tax.... Maybe a motability car.

However your choice of car will depend on your wife's needs. If she is a big woman with severe spine damage, then no matter how cheap the tax, she ain't getting in a Micra. She needs to try the car, not you choose one for your reasons. Unless you've been there and the Skoda was appropriate. But if your wife is disabled enough to qualify for Motability, then why not try that route, and then you get a new car, suitable and adapted for her needs. Then your costs are met from her allowance.

The Superb has more room than most cars particularly in the rear seat footwells which can only be equaled by the Audi A8 L.W.B. but is far more economical to run.
Also has enormous boot for her wheelchair and other essentials,

Thanks for all your great advice,
    Roger.

I drive a Skoda Fabia 1l turbo 2021 strangely - cherry red with black roof- black alloys.

I paid £258 comprehensive with legal cover and no claims bonus cover recently for insurance. Tax band is lowest you can get - I bought from new so first time I will be paying soon. For info, I am 45.

This is from Quotemehappy.com (Aviva underlying). I would try Legal & General or Saga for insurance also if you 70.

I have 10 years no claims mind, and am a low mileage user.

Its a nice car, nippy. (edited)

My insurance has doubled if I do change my car despite a 60 year NCB.
My pleasant company will not insure me on a Superb (or any other car) as it likes drivers who keep the same car for a long time ( 14 years).
    Quotemehappy is Norwich union ONLY!
    Many thanks,
    Roger.

Is "relatively few" worth the expense of a car and all the other costs, in comparison to having an account with a couple of cab firms that have suitable vehicles? You'll be looking around £10k+ for a car with a reasonable milage, plus insurance and maintenance, that is about 8 years old. Your wife probably qualifies for extra payment for aiding movement and transport, so why not use that and avoid extra headache, while being driven yourself.
