I couldn't care less about impressing my neighbours. The electrics on my Mercedes seem to be still holding up after 15 years, it does not seem to be having much success at emptying my wallet and it gets me from A to B in excellent comfort.

Absolute bargain! I bought a C200 SE saloon through Drive the Deal for £18,500 in late 2017, brilliant car, great spec and all through a Merc Dealer, never had a problem. You can't buy a Ford Focus for £22.5k these days!

Cheapest way is to take the finance and then pay it off in full immediately after delivery meaning absolute minimal interest (if any).

That’s a lot of car for the money. Very little hassle to take the finance then pay it straight off. Heat (edited)

Interestingly, having driven German cars for a number of years, I can confirm that they have all proven proficient in getting not only from A to B but then (shock, horror) on to C. None have missed a beat. Same can’t be said for the one French and two British built cars I’ve owned.

I'll always remember C180 as the slowest German I've driven. It is slow to accelerate and takes forever to get to top speed. Next one up C200 is a beast in comparison.

Mercedes cars have lots of issues approved used or new. I've been back to the dealership many times for new and used Mercedes and they lie constantly to get away from fixing problems.

Japs cars for the win, I notice German cars have too many sensors or little bits that go wrong, cant beat a jap car in terms of reliablity and low maintenance cost, oh how great it is not to be the local garages best friend (edited)

Whack the car specs into carwow (and see what they come up with) ... these are stock cars and are available to any dealer as is the finance discount .... depends how desperate your local dealer is to sell you a new car... try carwow (google it) then have a ring around.

These are terribly unreliable as most German cars in this range are. Still that's a very good deal.

If anyone is interested just got a quote on this. If you put a cash deposit of £2,500 in addition to the finance contribution already included as per there price you borrow £19,695 which is £268.20 x 36 months with a optional purchase at end of £12,775. Mileage allowance 10,000 a year. Excess mileage charge 9ppm.

Hot deal- wouldn’t mind this sort of discount on the saloon. Reliability wars on this thread so far. There is an element of luck to it.

Bought a 6-month old VW- it was in the garage 9 times in 9 months, with anything from ill fitted light units to a failing alternator.

Traded for a 3 year old A3- never missed a beat until it was written off by a drink driver whilst parked.

I bought a 6 month old A3 and have had it 3.5 years- it’s never missed a beat. Granted I don’t do high mileage.

My relatively new Civic (before the above purchases) had exhaust and gearbox issues within the warranty period (didn’t stop me loving the car mind you!

    Each to their own.

Best thing to do is buy a newish jap car with a relatively old design engine / not too much electronics , all these fancy gadgets are waiting to just break, or just buy a Lexus

I guess people do, but the longer you have a car the less relevant that becomes. A stack of receipts showing all the servicing etc wherever it was done is better than a car with little history. Bought a few cars with full dealer history that have clearly not had items done that should have been. MB hadnt done the gearbox oil change for example on one car that was less than 3 years old and BMW hadn't changed the air filter (it was clogged up with leaves when I looked at it!).
My daily driver is 3 years old this month. Had it serviced by Audi so far, but will be going elsewhere from now on.

My parents went from German to French and had no end of problems. I came from Alfa Romeo and Fiat to German, that was a massive step up in reliability!

Back on topic, this is a good price for a base Mercedes. Not my cup of tea with a low powered engine, but would suit my Dad!
  36. 118luke's avatar
Car threads consistently follow the same format every time... no matter what brand it is, you have just as many people praising the reliability as you do slating it.

Biggest load of crap I've ever heard. I've had countless German cars and they've never had any significant problems. Unless you're buying some old junker or from some sketchy second-hand dealer trying to afford something you can't, you shouldn't have any problems.

We only have one life, if you want to spend yours driving a Skoda or a Ford then fine, that's up to you. But don't make yourself look a fool by saying that luxury German cars can't 'get you from A to B'. (edited)

Fully agree with you. My only comment is that Skoda is technically a German car too, as it has the VW engines.
