What's your budget mate and what do you plan to use it for? Also what's important to you? Reason I ask is I had two i5 4th gen HP and 5th gen Dell laptops before lockdown. They both saw regular basic use but 8 hours minimum a day during lockdown changed all that and made me realise how pants they were. Yeah they were good deals from on here but not fit for lockdown.

I've never really returned anything before but during lockdown I've returned at least 8 laptops and settled on the current i5 11th Gen hp envy with mx450. At the moment it's cost me £600 but if topcashback comes through it'll be £500 which isn't bad considering it's currently £899 at Currys. So you have to go to the ball ache of waiting and jumping on a deal when it comes through.

For me I've learnt that a minimum of 300 nits 100% srgb screen with a backlit keyboard of at least 1.5mm travel is my important requirement along with a quality feeling body, ideally metal. That was thanks to a lot of people on here who helped me with their comments especially one who said you'll spend thousands of hours looking at the screen so really that should be your top priority.

    These are my recommendations
    1) the Huawei matebook 14 4600h 16gb ram 512gb SSD was recently under £550 with free gifts and the 8gb version even cheaper. I'd wait and see what Huawei do for black Friday

    2) HP Envy range are very good, they like a poor man's arsenal in footballing terms. Think HP will do some sort of offer either direct on their site or through retailers

    3) Lenovo yogas are very good. Again look for offers on their site or through retailers

    4) Zenbooks, these can be hit and miss with their screens but stunning machines. Get the right one for the right price and you won't regret it. Like that current one on Currys for £999 wow what a machine but overkill for most casual work office use.

Personally I think the future is 2k and 4k screens not only are they gorgeous to look at but work wise great the extra screen space and detail is awesome, which is why is all the above the best one I'd say for the money will be Huawei matebook 14 2k screen

No doubt there's plenty of other machines so worth keeping an open mind so long as they fit what's important to you and what you want to use them for (edited)

Miles better. But I don't think you'll se that soon at £399. There are some similar deals from AO, for about £500 with AO cashback. (edited)

My son starts in September and want to get him a decent one for working, classes, assignments etc (and I presume he'll want to download games - but not my priority)I really don't know much about laptops or processors etc. Any help and recommendations you can give will be greatly appreciated. (I am limited for cash, my budget is maximum £500 -with a push)Thank you.

Not at all happy to help. You've said September, so so you mean September 2022? If so that's so long ahead that it's worth waiting closer to the time especially when retailers have back to school, starting uni deals on etc.

Can I also ask what your son will be using it for? If it's for something like a general subject where he only needs word processing, Excel etc or is it a computing based subject where he'll be needing high processor/ graphics card for some intensive tasks?

You also mention gaming, if you want portability then you'll need to sacrifice on gaming. Like my hp envy 13 is amazing portable and has a basic graphics card (mx450) so it can handle basic ish games whereas gaming laptops are a lot heavier but great for gaming and battery life naturally not as good.

As an example my hp envy 13 weighs 1.3kgs, battery easy 10 hours for office based used, 13 inch, ram not upgradable and only one hard drive SSD slot. This setup is typical of most 13 to 14 inch laptops and ultimately you're paying for portability.

Gaming example is say the best value for money being the legion 5i which was £675 some months back. Now that is a 15.6 inch screen, upgradable ram, 2 SSD slots so you can upgrade, will play pretty much anything you throw at it (obviously not forever as games get more demanding each year), it weighs 2.5kgs ish, with the power brick 3kgs, battery life naturally less say 4 to 5 hours and less for gaming

Have a word with your son to see what he likes, gaming or portability. Also if you don't mind me saying if it's for 3 years at uni you might want to consider perhaps increasing your budget to £700 ish just so you can make sure it'll last him the full 3 to 4 years of his course.

Hope that helps as a starter and happy to help further if needed, on here or pm me

Hi all, not to self promote, but the lenovo I posted earlier is 30 quid more with a far better processor.
Just an FYI, not wanting to trash this deal.

To be fair yours is the better offer but in all honesty I don't think either one is a great deal. Both are crazy plasticy, just feel horrible. Yours will be less so but personally I'd add more to my budget or wait for a better deal especially as black Friday coming up
