Having tried and owned pretty much all wireless ANC headphones between £200 and £800, these are a steal at this price.

    Amazing headphones.

Not too bad of a deal! Managed to get mine for around £375 last year with a bit of luck! For those comparing the Sony XM3/4/5 range, these sonically perform at a very similar level, being someone who has tried XM3s and XM4s, AirPods Max objectively have the far better transparency mode, and the noise cancelling is pretty much neck and neck - although I prefer the AirPods cancellation as it seems to work better for me on background chatter and stuff.

All that being said, if you aren't already using apple devices, skip them, a lot of the draw is the seamless connectivity and fuller feature set when used with apple devices, you will have a better experience with other headsets if you're not in the apple ecosystem.

Really good price for the AirPods Max, but for £380 you can put a preorder in for the new Sony XM5s, out on the 20th.

Despite the appearance and rep these seem to have, they are apparently superb and many people rave about how good these are

    Yawn.

has a point. These are the new Beats headphones

Every other audio/headphone company lists the specs but not Apple/Beats who rely on marketing buzzwords and brand popularity to sell. Is it really that hard to state the driver size?

A pair of Bose QC 35iis AND Sony WH-1000XM3s for the same price as a pair of headphones with an Apple logo on it You can't say you're bored seeing the rediculously overpriced Apple tax comments (edited)

No they don't. Apple have largely avoided competing on 'headline specs' whether in computing, mobile phones or audio. It works for them too.

I'm not so sure. Those 30 mm drives are making me sit out the xm5s

If you have an iPhone this is by far the best deal headphone wise. They're better than the XM5's and cheaper at this price, but again, only for iPhone users.

If you're anything but iPhone then I'd go for the XM5/XM4/XM3's. By all accounts the last 3 Sony's have been so similar that I'd personally get some cheap XM3's for less than half the price of the XM5's. XM4's if you find a pair under £200.

The XM5 call quality is abysmal, and the transparency mode doesn't come close to the Airpods Max. Yes the call quality is better than the XM3/XM4, but that's like saying Boris Johnson is better than Donald Trump.

You won't care unless it's a direct side by side comparison though. Neither feature is considered vital to a pair of headphones, and the while the Sony transparency is noticeably worse, it's more than good enough to do the job. I'm still amazed by the XM3 transparency. (edited)

These are great value for £368, considering apples usual rrp rip off.
Even though I love my Sonys, these would be a good replacement slightly better at calls and a must have for iPhones.

However, consider the fact that wh1000xm4 go around like £150~ish and these are £300, so you are paying for usually not noticeable although slightly better performance in a few aspects (calls, clean ui, build quality, optimisation etc.) which do not add upto £150+ extra you are paying for these.

Considerjng the apple brand innertia, and comfort of dealing with apple over Sony for some people the fact that these are at the £350~ price do make these a great deal just not a steal or anything super special.

I use Sony XM3's for my computer as I'm not using a Mac, and Airpods Pro for my phone, so not particularly wedded to either brand. But to say these are like Beats is just total nonsense. Go look at the impartial reviews. The Airpods Max are universally well reviewed for sound quality, particularly when paired with an Apple product. To say they're like Beats makes you either completely uninformed or wilfully misleading, neither of which is a strong look...

Apple, Beats, Sonos etc don't state specs because they know people buy them for the brand and popularity

I owned a pair of these and have to say, the vocals were just tinny and there is no way to change this unlike compared to the Sony WH1000 series. I returned them as I couldn't justify the price (around £330 from Amazon Warehouse). Much prefer my XM4s!

The weight of the Sony WH-1000XM4 is 254g, bit disappointed that the 'lighter' WH-1000XM5 model that some of the Youtube reviews talked about turns out to be only 4g lighter according to Sony's spec sheet! Hopefully Apple release a new model that addresses some of the criticisms and also a lot lighter than the current model's 384 grams.

Feel like Sony have shot themselves in the foot over the lack of foldability with the M5 but apparently they're retaken the noise cancellation crown and sound is pretty good (for wireless headphones).

The Apple headphones may be a bit of a niche product but I can't pretend I didn't greatly enjoy watching movies with them; if you're part of the Apple eco system, they are a lot of fun, just not great for travelling with or getting mugged outside the gym! Hot, for me, at that price.

I meant incredibly overpriced like Beats that are popular because of the brand and style, I never said they're the same for sound quality which were average at best for Beats

They still aren't twice as good as QC 35iis or Sony's XM3s are they and no one can justify the £550 RRP

I disagree with you on the only reason to get these. Sure, I can understand and maybe even somewhat agree that Apple uses vague marketing to sell their products. However Apple does have a unique way to market their products. Other manufacturers have done similar things in their adverts. Nobody else really pulls this style off as well as they do; being central and focused around the user experience of their products.

However, you can find the spec of their products if it is important to you and that's the point. Either you can find it with them or someone else will have it. At worst, you can accuse them of being obtuse but if you look closely enough, all manufacturers are obtuse in some regard or another.

I disagree on your accusation that the only reason to get these is because you're a brand loyalist or tied up in the ecosystem. I've use and own different branded headphones with any Apple products I've owned and it's not a considered to be brand loyal. Whatever brand or corporation you list, they're all disloyal when it comes to anything outside of your custom and money. Some more than others.

These are objectively speaking, really good headphones. Like it or not. They review well. They have a really satisfied user base and have little in the way wrong with them to nit pick over. They fulfil their purpose extremely well.

Neither is the build quality. Sound wise - if listening on Apple ecosystem in lossless spatial audio they blow any other headphones out the water. The big question is are they worth the extra money over the Sony (and that is subjective) but to say that Sony are better in almost every way just isn't true.

Have you tried the AirPods Max? The build quality is... Questionable. The Sony ones use much nicer materials, and are far more comfortable.

The ANC is unbeatable on the Sony ones too. Streets ahead of Apple in all areas except the transparency mode.

Don't just take my word for it. MKBHD reviews are reliable and he has tried both the AirPods Pro and the Sonys, in fact every generation of them.

I paid full price for mine the day they came out and don’t regret it, brilliant headphones. £368 is still pricey bit I gave it heat as that’s a chunk off the £550 Apple sell them for.
  36. Cakeboy79's avatar
Heat added. I picked up a pair in the Amazon Warehouse sale for £330 and they're comfortably the best headphones I've ever used. Noise cancellation is great, they're heavy, but comfortable and the sound reproduction using Apple's lossless audio is amazing.

I'm sure there are better headphones out there and if you have an Android phone I wouldn't even bother with them, but for the price I paid I don't think there's much better and certainly nothing with that build quality.
