The Exorcist (screening Saturday 30th of September and Wednesday the 4th of October)
The Exorcist (screening Saturday 30th of September and Wednesday the 4th of October)The late William Friedkin helmed this shocking, blockbusting, and instantly controversial adaptation of William Peter Blatty's novel. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, The Exorcist has lost none of its power to chill viewers to the core, as it presents the battle for the soul of imperiled young girl Regan (Linda Blair).
Hellraiser (screening Monday 9th of October
Clive Barker adapted his grisly novella The Hellbound Heart to bring us a gruesome classic of late-eighties cinema. With its unforgettably perverse imagery and groundbreaking make-up effects, now gleaming all the more vividly in a new 4K restoration, Hellraiser takes viewers to hell and back, quite literally, with Doug Bradley's iconic Pinhead acting as our guide.
Friday the 13th (screening Friday the 13th of October)
One of the biggest slasher hits to come in the wake of John Carpenter's Halloween, Friday the 13th is still an enjoyably jittery experience with some truly memorable kill sequences. Who is the psycho stalking horny teens at Camp Crystal Lake? The answer may surprise you (or not, if you've seen the opening scene of Scream)
Christine (screening Thursday the 18th of October)
Now 40 years old, John Carpenter's adaptation of Stephen King's cult novel centres on a killer car with a mind of its own. When a restored 1958 Plymouth Fury starts to eliminate those it perceives as a threat to its owner, all manner of hell breaks loose. When we mention the clutch, that's what you'll be doing to your cinema seat.

sorted byAlien is still one of the greats, as you really don't see the Xenomorph all that often, but you know it's always lurking around somewhere, which just makes it all the more unsettling. Sure, part of the reason for that might be that they didn't want to show what is essentially just a tall Nigerian man in a rubber suit covered in vaseline too much as it would look ridiculous, but the result is amazing.
The good horror films now are the psychological ones, as they make you think and get under your skin. Saw just relies on gore and for the most part The Conjuring films relies on cheap jump scares and cg monsters jumping about. They usually look faker than practical effects, so your brain knows there's no real danger.
