Pointless gesture which may benefit about 10 people who have need to call the Philippines. Just a thought here, anyone badly affected will likely not have a working telephone (no line, no electricity to recharge mobiles). Anyone who you can call was probably not in trouble anyway.

Sp Virgin get a PR boost from the gullible and it costs them nothing.

What a lovely valuable member of the human race you sound, your mum must be so proud.

Even if it helped just one person to afford to contact their loved ones in the Phillipines and brought them comfort would it not be worth it?

Ah damn you beat me too it!

This deserves to be the hottest thing of the day, cmon people, regardless of what you think of Virgin Media this is a godsend to our Phillipino friends in the UK and a great gesture.

Nice gesture since as SunTzu says if it only helps one person it's clearly not pointless!

what would be nice if Virgin and bt were to send a few engineers and materials out to the Philippines to help them get back to normality, offers far more value than donations.

If one who can be contacted and is possibly be able to his/her relative is better than not knowing what has happened to their loved ones....

heat from me and I'm not a VM customer...

Bt have phone engineers out there, as my mate is one of them restoring telephone lines.

I wonder if this gesture of questionable value was to deflect attention from the £4.50 price increase they also announced yesterday. Before people call me heartless, I voted hot in the hope doing so maximises the usefulness (and cost to VM).

Guessing there is a fair usage policy involved?

Wouldn't want Virgin's hard earned profits to be eroded as a result of this....

Lets be honest here - its probably costs Virgin Media next to nothing to connect from the UK to the Philippines yet the normal calling charge is extorsh! Nice gesture though, something maybe BT, Sky etc will pick up on

donating money to charity does next to nothing, but it makes people look good so

May not be the best company in the world but still voted hot for the kind gesture. Virgin didn't have to do this, even if it is for PR purposes it will still hopefully help many.

Cold from me, do the people who have nothing really want me phoning them up? Talk about kicking them when they're down

Couldn't be further from the truth

There are thousands of Filipinos in the UK. Just the other day I heard on the news of a Philipino woman contacting her mother in the city who asked her to transfer some money so her son could get some food.

Good gesture by VM, told loads of Filipino friends about this who have VM & are very happy.

I don't have Virgin Media and I don't know anyone in the Philippines but I voted hot because it is a thoughtful gesture - well done VM!

Well done Virgin Media. Thank you so much for your sympathy. It only shows that you care to those who are helpless at this time of calamity. Communication is very important to ease our fears and worries. What you've done is greatly appreciated by us (Filipinos). God bless your company a thousand fold.

What a miserable person you are. Have you even donated to the Philippines? What a sad sad person.

Very clever marketing idea by Virgin Media, and if it helps one person without hurting anyone else then surely it should be praised, not criticised?
  28. LondonDiva's avatar
Just goes to show when a company does one gesture to help out it's criticized by some heartless people. Even if one family here and in the Phillipines benefits as a result of a phone call for piece of mind or to arrange to send money then it's totally worth it. Some of us are so flipping priviliged we can't even fathom the benefit of a free phone call to a devastated country at the moment.
  29. lindabuchan's avatar
well said LondonDiva we dont know how lucky we are compared to these poor people who are still suffering more than a week after

I think it's great if them, like some people already said even it only helps one person it's worth it.
I heard about this yesterday when I rang virgin regarding a fault, it says just make sure you hang up after 60 minutes then redail to avoid any cost.

you speak a lot of sense!!
People are blinded by these "acts if kindness" so easily.
To those calling people heartless etc...Yes it's great for those who will benefit from this but I'm pretty sure virgin media will be getting a hell of a lot more back in the long run.

You hit the nail on the head. People who have family/friends in The Philippines will always search for the best call pricing plan that covers The Philippines (and Virgin have never been anywhere near)

Whether it benefits Virgin or not is immaterial as it will certainly benefit some people with friends and family in the Philippines so well done to Virgin. It would be nice if other phone companies would do the same.
