HOME ACCESS GRANT

The government is given out 'Home Access Grant', free laptops grants for low income families. While it was only launched in January, already the Govt's given out 55,000 grants and is processing 10,000s more.

Who Qualifies:
The grant targets people on a lower income without internet access who have children in school years 3 to 9 (age 7 to 14). There are a few tests for this, but as a rule of thumb, if you qualify for free school meals, you're likely to count for this too.

How Do I Apply?
Call 0333 200 1004 or check details at homeaccess.org.uk. Once you've done a quick eligibility check you'll be sent an application form to complete, which generally takes 3 weeks to process. To help your application be trouble free the grant helpline has given some top tips to filling out the form:

FULL details including top tips on how to successfully apply in the New Guide: Free Laptop Grants Related: Grant Grabbing, Child Care Costs, Tax Credits

What Equipment Do I Get?
Depending on your need you can get up to £528 to spend on a computer (laptop, desktop, netbook and one year's web access). Yet you cannot go anywhere, it's only retailers that operate the scheme, though these include mainstream providers such as Comet, Phones4u and Misco.

Once you've been accepted you'll be sent a voucher to hand in to one of the participating schemes. Vouchers need to be used within three months.

Rep added, but it's funny, isn't it? There's something weird about advertising and providing details of this on t'Internet, when it is to help people who don't have access to the Internet..

Its a bit like telling someone, who can't read, to fill out an application form for English lessons

Not really, Im sure people use their work (office) computers or maybe the library?
anyhow someone in my neighbourhood already has a computer AND internet, but due to being eligble for it, they still got a new Laptop. You can choose to have a computer/laptop OR the internet, if you have not had internet before I think you can have both, but anyways worth a try isnt it!

Btw! Just joined this forum few days ago, how do I see the amount of Rep other people have? I can see my own but how do I see other peoples? not really a point having it if I only see my own.

So if I stopped working, the government will pay the interest on my mortgage, my council tax, pay me some spending money, give me a free bus pass and top it off with a free laptop and internet.

Can't see why so many are out of work at the moment.

Good! I'm working class... but i'd much rather have a decent NHS service, than the CTF. £250 per child won't actually get the individual that much, but all those £250's added together is a sizeable amount of money that could be put to better use...

Same as this free laptop rubbish....

    (I'll step down now... :P )

im worse off voting for them but its a balance.....if brown and labour were in charge any our debt would be double after creating millions of new non-jobs and spending more we havent got

agreed.....i have private healthcare through my company - however private healthcare is very cheap in this country because these private hc companies still rely on the nhs for expensive treatments like cancer.....

nhs in reading is good, no complaints - unlike other areas but care in the USA isnt that great and mega expensive....

my bros in USA and Switzerland pay 4-5 times what i paid privately for private care for our similar requirements (family 2 adults/2 kids uk approx £180/mth, usa approx £800/mth, switzerland approx £900/mth)...

HOWEVER, in this country we have the fallback of cheap (or free for some) healthcare in the NHS...

id always support having a decent freeish hcare service even if i didnt use it.....same goes for benefits which annoyingly is being abused by scum

another stupid labour idea killed - totally dumb idea - glad common sense has prevailed

This is advertised via Schools, Libraries etc. IT is expected that parents would get more info from internet access at a Library. Application is via the phone/postal application. So nothing funny really.

You won't get interest paid until three or nine months after losing your job (god forbid you should); depending upon when you mortgaged or remortgaged your home. Trying to hold of your lender for that period of time will be a task. Don't forget only your interest is paid, so if you get into arrears for a repayment mortgage, the lender will still take action.

Free Bus Pass is a new one on me, perhaps your local DWP people are feeling generous.

The free laptop applies to kids of a certain age. Most claimants will be genuine; but like any other benefit that is fraudulently claimed, a few will go to the undeserving.
