Asda today have announced that it’s to offer all its customers a free warming breakfast porridge and a hot drink. The initiative is open to all ages and will run from Wednesday 7th February until 20th March daily from 8am to 12pm, in the retailers 205 Asda Cafés. The partnership with Quaker will allow customers to enjoy a free bowl of porridge along with a cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate, to warm up from the UK’s cold winter weather expected this week.

The new free breakfast initiative is now one of four that are live in Asda Café’s, alongside the popular Kids Eat for £1 which has served over 3.1 million meals since its launch in June 2022 and will continue support families are we approach half term.

The £1 Winter Warmers initiative for our over 60’s is available until the end of February offering Soup, a Roll and a hot drink and have served over 350,000 since November. The retailer also offers local community groups the ‘community cuppa’ which offers community groups a warm and free place to meet with a free hot drink.

The move comes as Asda’s latest Income Tracker reveals that despite positive improvements, disposable income remains firmly down on the values witnessed prior to the cost-of-living crisis. Compared to the peak of £246 in Q1 2021, UK-wide disposable income has fallen by 9.1%.

Alongside the free breakfast for customers, everyone below served Quaker will be donate ten breakfasts to FareShare.

Kris Comerford, Asda’s Chief Commercial Officer, said:“We know that at this time of year, customers feel an additional strain on household budgets, especially with the colder weather. Building on our successful collaboration with Quaker in 2023, we’re partnering with the brand once again to demonstrate our support for customers and help to alleviate some of the pressures they face through rising living costs. In addition to our popular Kids eat for £1 and the over 60’s Winter Warmers £1 Soup and Roll café meals, all our customers can now enjoy a free bowl of porridge and hot drink in over 205 Asda cafes†. By bringing back the initiative in 2024 we hope it will prove to be impactful across the winter months for those who need it most.”

Divesh Parmar, Quaker UK General Manager at PepsiCo, said:“1 in 4 children are at risk of food security in the UK[1], and as temperatures drop over winter, we know the very real impact of hunger increases. Collaborating closely with retail partners is vital in ensuring shoppers have access to a warm breakfast, so we’re delighted to be taking our partnership with Asda even further this year†. We’re also doubling down with our wider support for those most in need, issuing temperature dynamic coupons‡ and bringing back our Share the Warmth on-pack promotion*. Our donations of up to 3 million warm breakfasts means we can continue to do our bit in supporting the great work of our charity partners, FareShare and Magic Breakfast.

Enjoy it while it lasts, the brothers are going to bankrupt Asda.

They've already sold the distribution centres and leased them back to the company. I imagine they'll sell all the other buildings and lease back later.

They'll sell all the assets, make bank then run.

The Issa brothers are strippers – asset strippers – and in the current economic environment of higher interest rates, the rent they have to pay to the new owners of the buildings will have been unaccounted for when the brothers purchased Asda in early 2021 for peanuts (£780 million), saddling Asda with considerable debt. Just visited my local Asda Cafe (Gloucester) and they knew nothing about this. Got turned away. Hungry ;-( (edited)

You should have shown them this, and raised higher. Morrisons were a lot better when they did similar offers, all staff knew from day 1 and they had signage.

not all cafes inside Asda are ran by Asda. The one in my local is a totally separate company but no signage to state what that company is. The only way to tell is that the menu / signage does not have any Asda logo on. I know this because I had a big gift card to use and they can't accept it

What’s to stop people abusing the offer? Do they get your ID or something?

Because this is a great idea, hopefully people don’t abuse it so they don’t offer it in the future

How much porridge are people planning to eat?

Great nutritional idea in these austere times.
I have porridge for breakfast every day.
Will this generous offer go to the people who really need it,do people on low incomes only shop at Lidl & Aldi.

I'm not low income, but I shop at both of those.

I like everything both do, their own brand stuff is banging. Their booze selection is better too. And the middle isle can be a thing of wonder (chainsaw anyone?!) But the both fail massively on fruit and veg. I had to stop buying onions from both, lost count of the amount of rotton in the inside ones I had.

Asda own brand stuff is terrible and quite expensive.

Wish other supermarkets would look after their customers as well.

Morrisons have been doing different free food offers over school holidays for the last year at least. I think they started with a baked potato and bean, did cereal then most recently (frequently) free crumpets and jam. I expect they'll do the crumpet one, in partnership with Warburtons, again this half term.

Thanks. Just had a blob of apple and blueberry porridge and a latte after a five mile bike ride.

They closed our cafe and put in a McDonalds ages back, like we needed another to add to the 5 already in a short radius.

That is so lovely. My mother-in-law was in a fold and every so often, she got a big hamper of food from Asda as well. So unexpected but really lovely and appreciated. They are the only ones that do anything to give a little back.
