I have the Marshall MG 50DFX, which I love. Presume this would be a little better? Thanks

Not just a little, a lot better

For raw power the Marshalls are great, I just got rid of my Combo 80W as been using Katana Mk2 for a while now which has more 'tricks' up its sleeve.

What I would be weary of though is the weight, my small combo was a hefty beast but in comparison the Katana was lightweight even the 100 is light in comparison to this beast at 27Kg.

Had the Katana MK2 for just over a year and that's all the amp I think most people would ever need. Absolutely chock full of features and you can basically create any tone you want. The tone shaper software is excellent.

Wondering what it costs to change the valves. There are 6 valves and from googling seems like they are £30 to £60 each + labour.

Can anyone advise appropriately how often they need replacing (and if these costs seem sensible). Thanks

they dont need changed that often, my marshall amp was bought in 2014 and iv not needed to change the valves yet, sometimes 1 goes and thats all you need to change, i used to get valves sent over from america about 15 years ago, think the brand was JJ? they were less than £10 each, doubt they will be that price now lol

you can change them yourself, its fairly easy to do (edited)

Good discount but only if you like Marshall amps. Personally I find them a bit 'loud but characterless' although I know some people really like them.

Eh, the DSL line is more than just a 'traditional' Marshall amp. The Ultra gain channel is quite modern sounding.

That said, you might be the first person I've ever heard call the Marshall sound 'characterless'. I can understand not liking the character, but lacking in character? :/ (edited)

This is a killer deal. If more people knew about guitar stuff, this would be a burning hot deal. A genuine great sounding, two channel tube amp that can do well at traditional Marshall tones(especially if you use Classic channel + boost with overdrive) and more modern tones on Ultra gain channel. Plus it's got reverb and an FX loop, footswitch included and at 40w it's perfectly good for gigging - it's a true complete package amp. (edited)

27kg and no side handles = not perfect for gigging

Seems like a very good price considering it is cheaper than the 1 x 12

... does this one go up to 11?
    PeacePipe's avatar
Shame it doesn't have one 10" and one 11" speaker.
Then when you need that 'push over the cliff', you can switch from the ten to the eleven incher.

Good to see an amp deal for a change ....
You'll probably want a detached house to go with it though

Mind you with the money you've saved you could get an attenuator

As mentioned I imagine this'll be pretty heavy

    But great amp (edited)

anyone know how this compares with the old dsl401 combo from about 20 years ago? i had one and liked it.

i now use the marshall sl5 (edited)

Decent bit of kit here at a good price

it's a nice amp indeed, iv had marshalls fenders peaveys, some combos are heavy to carry, iv settled for a blackstar id core 150, i was thinking at the time all the bells and whistles but could play at low volumes and its lighter compared to what iv had, guess what it's slighty less heavy, and it's bloody loud, 1 is loud, i may sell it as i do not play live anymore, may get something house bedroom safe, orange rocker 15 maybe. if i had a house in a field, in the countryside id have this marshall
or an evh 5150 stack.. probably the latter lol.

    I’ve got this amp
It’s got classic rock vibe about it & it sings if you get the sweet spot with the valves - great deal !

fun fact for all the 'goes up to 11' jokers

status quo actually had 11 put on all their marshall amps i believe
    DingoDirk's avatar
    I can believe that.

I saw Status Quo live when I was about 14. They were absolutely terrible and it almost put me off rock music seeing and hearing all the adults saying how good they were. I just couldn't understand it.

So tempted but the Katana or Spark Mini may be calling me. Just want something for the garage occasionally and 400 notes for the pleasure may be excessive (edited)
    freddyfender's avatar
If youre ok with the noise level then I'd go for it...otherwise katana all day long and twice on Sunday
