Is the Breville barista Max similar ?
    It's selling for £298
    TakeMyCash's avatar
No. That's a different machine from a completely different manufacturer/brand (known as Sunbeam in America/Australia), and is reviewed quite poorly usually. The confusion is caused by Breville international selling their Breville brand name in either the UK or Europe some decades ago and now they can't buy it back, so they can't use that name here, hence why they're branded as Sage in the UK (and maybe Europe). Breville international (Sage) are the ones with a long track record of making good quality espresso machines, whereas Breville UK (Sunbeam) don't. So the Braista Max by UK Breville brand is essentially a trap, I wouldn't be surprised if a big percentage of their sales are people getting tricked into thinking Sage = Breville and therefore this is a heavily discounted Breville machine.

    Price is £467.46 with code!
    Am I missing something? (edited)

You have to select the black version, which is £100 cheaper than the stainless steel.

Ignoring the grinder, this basically has the same performance as the Bambino to my knowledge, is that right?
    Jas_maz's avatar
    Author
pretty much a hybrid of bambino and the burr grinder in one machine and maybe less counter top space
  4. CodyJoseph_Kelly's avatar
I’d like to know if this is the same performance as the bambino plus too minus the grinder? I’ve just ordered the bambino plus for £270 and was gonna get the dose control pro separately which I can find for £101 so works out about the same price as this - anyone advise which option is better? (edited)

Had this Barista Express for a good number of years before I sold it. The grinder on this is not very good, made shots inconsistent especially if beans changed. If I had to get one again I'd go for a separate grinder. Also as this is combined you need a specific amount of space on the counter/worktop, I imagine there's more flexibility if they're separate (like e.g. you can have a gap between the two). I'd opt for the bambino.

I have the Beko bean to cup without the steamer, being as my favorite drink is cappuccino, I miss the wand. I get by using my manual frother and microwave.

But other than the wand, what is the biggest improvement on this over the bean to cup please? (edited)
    TakeMyCash's avatar
Bean to cup is more about convenience, and bean to cup machines are usually good with cheaper supermarket purchased beans (branded/non branded, expiry dates years in the future, etc). The trade off is that it you won't get as good a shot as you can get with a more "manual" machine like this Sage Barista one beacuse a bean to cup won't be able to prepare the coffee as well as a human can and will have less fine tuning/dialing in capabilities.

The downside with this Sage machine is that there's a lot of things you will probably need, techniques to learn, etc to get a good shot and consistently so. You kinda need to get speciality beans to get a good consistent extraction with a good crema, it really needs beans roasted within a 2 week to 2 month date so most supermarket sold beans won't be good (a few brands do have 'roasted on' dates, like Union, but otherwise you're buying from local or online coffee speciality stores). You can use cheaper supermarket beans ofc but expect to waste a few shots, poor cremas, bitter tastes, etc. You also ideally need to buy a bunch of tools to assist with proper puck prep (WDT tool, funnel, filter, scales, probably a better spring loaded tamper, etc). And then this machine kinda sits in an awkward spot because whilst it's decent overall it's got some weaknesses that mean if you're going down this route of a machine that really wants top quality beans then you really want to be getting better equipment. Like the grinder is poor, the milk wand is OK but it only has one hole and can be frustrating sometimes as the frothing isn't consistent, the extraction is decent but you can get better. As an entry level or new to this coffee experience machine it's great value, but it's nowhere near perfect.

How does this compare to the delonghi magnifica ecam series? I've had mine for 8 years now and it won't die, looking for any excuse to upgrade!

    Me too!

What needs washing up after each cup?
    idealstandard's avatar
Just the portafilter, and your teeth.
  9. Savvyshopperr's avatar
Great machine. Had mine 4 years or so now. It's not simple to use however. Takes time and practice to get a perfect shot of espresso. I ended up becoming a coffee geek and snob after buying this.
    AverageJoeseph's avatar
The snobs have kits that cost thousands of pounds. Don't worry, you're fine.

How does this price compare to the cheapest it’s ever been? Is this a genuinely good deal? Thanks

I paid £360ish some time ago. I think that was the lowest. £380 is a great price, can't see it going any lower.

    Jas_maz's avatar

Hi, the code I have used can only be used once. you will have to request a new one from Kev's blog
  26. Fabby's avatar
This or the Bambino & dose control for 322?
    kristmace's avatar
A separate grinder is better if you want different types of coffee as well as espresso (filter, french press, mokka pot, etc).
  27. wastedwardy's avatar
We have one of these - really high quality, makes fantasic coffee. Yes, it's expensive but you get what you pay for and it saves me from buying takeaway coffee when I'm out because it's rubbish in comparison!

I have silver colour which I bought for 425 from Lakeland Sept 2023 - deal was posted here. I am very happy with machine so far. Love the daily coffee. Have not need to any Barista shop since then.

Had this machine about 4 years, going strong and use at least twice a day. I recommend the dosing funnel it makes it much easier to prepare without overspillage: sageappliances.com/uk/…EU1
