Long technical reviews of both the Sony and LG over at rtings.com, both updated on Nov 16th and used the same v1.8 test methodology. Both get really good reviews but the LG does better in 5 of the 7 tests, with 1 a draw.

Interestingly, though they both score the same in totaled points in HDR Movies, in that area, they noted particularly that the Sony has "better gradient handling and tone mapping" but brightness is "just okay", with "the LG is a bit brighter, especially when displaying small, bright highlights in dark scenes"; they rate the Sony as best for watching movies, so if that's your primary use, I'd go for the Sony, with the LG doing better in TV shows.

They LG just edges it in sports, slightly ahead in computer games, more significantly so in HDR Gaming and as a PC Monitor, though as I understand it if using it for office work, working with text, you're better to get a separate computer monitor that's tailored to/looks much better for that; that's come up in a lot of the reviews I've read.

Being rtings, the reviews for each are very long and quite technical but if you're looking for confidence in your purchase, well worth reading, though perhaps not if you're prone to bouts of buyer's remorse/high blood pressure, I'm sure most people would be happy with either and relieved to have finally found the TV for them but rtings summarise: -

Sonys upscaling is miles ahead of LG. So TV should generally be better on the Sony as well. However if you need it for gaming then LG is the best best.

This is a great deal. Vs the C1 which I've had for a year, films seem sharper and the image really pops off the screen on this. There was a big price difference between the two at the time; if I had to make the choice now, I'd defo get this.

Sold my Sony 55 inch to get the LG G1 and it was the biggest mistake I’ve done when purchasing a tv. Definitely get a Sony as the LG is nowhere near the Sony in terms of functionality (useful) screen calibration and overall quality of product. (edited)

Richer sounds refusing to price match as I bought online and won't match against a store price. really disappointed with them on this occasion, as only went with them for the price match promise over black Friday week/s

RS just price matched this for me, although they deducted 34 pounds for the cost of membership as this is a members deal only.

Just a quick post here for people who do buy this TV and want to use their phone as a remote control via Google TV phone app.
The Android remote services app needs to be updated for it to work.
After spending a few hours trying multiple methods I found one that worked and it's quite easy.

Download a browser on the TV via the built in play store (I used puffin browser)
Do a search for "Android TV remote services" via the browser.
Click on the link that is from Google play store in search results.
It will ask whether to open in browser or play store.
    Choose play store.
It will then update the system app and the TV will be seen on phone.

Google searches yield loads of old results from a year ago telling you to side load the app but it's not needed. (edited)

What Hi-Fi updated their review a few weeks ago when it was £998, perhaps updated in anticipation of Black Friday:-

"You should of course consider spending a little more on a newer, 2022 TV. The Sony A80K and LG C2 are both better overall, particularly in terms of brightness and, in the case of the LG, even better specified for gaming. But there's no denying that the A80J is still an excellent TV that will reward buyers for years to come." I notice it has been cheaper on Amazon (on four occasions this month dipping to £813) but his appears to be the best price, now.

It's rare I agree with What Hifi but this statement is broadly true. I have had both TVs. The Sony is great but the LG being newer brighter lovely remote does beat it. Only in sound does the Sony win but that's not by a great deal. If you sit in a dark/dull room then both are great.

I did wonder if it would trump the C2.

I haven't seen it against the C2 but I've seen it against the S95b and the C1 (not gaming though) and preferred it.
