Yea the new models are a big let-down. Still stuck on 1Gb and lack of integrated GPU for Plex. Likewise, not as energy efficient, but the CPU is better for tasks other than Plex.

I ended up getting a new ds920 instead of the newer model. So if you can get the 220 new at a cheaper price, id go with it. And I'd def get it over the 723 to be honest.

Synology are also starting to offer refurbished units with a warranty . (edited)

i'm looking out for a cheap and cheerful synology 5 bay, 2nd hand or refurb. my old one just wouldn't boot up intermittently. when i tried the fix which is well documented i ruined the circuit board. got the drives with data on it (nothing important) but would love to get them spinning again. I've been running Xpenology on my gen8 Microserver since 2015 and it's probably the best hardware I've ever bought. Rock solid reliability, and still faster than most of the genuine Synology boxes. Xpenology went through a tough patch where the developers disappeared, but it's fantastic at the moment. DSM 7.1.1 runs flawlessly. There's a graphical setup utility now that automats nearly everything.

The only thing I don't like about the gen8 is that the power usage, with 5 HDDs is around 70w - and electricity is stupidly expensive at the moment. (edited)

How this compares to Asustor AS1102T?

Asustor AS1102T is a bit more noisy, but also good. I got "Western Digital My Cloud 24TB EX2 Ultra 2-bay NAS, Grade A++ Ex-office equipment" from eBay, 5 still available. Less features more space, better value for money.

I recommend to go with 4 bays minimum.

Spoiler - your cpu alone is 5 watts. Add other components and usb powered HDD it adds more. Not much, I still fully support your method (I run something similar) over people spending 100s on Nas systems

Was about to buy this then decided to go a bit more & got the ds220+. Slightly newer & faster.

    The 220+ isn't newer, it's from 2020. This is a 2023 model.

It shocked me that Synology have actually bothered to release a new NAS in the first place but when I checked out the specs for this, it offers next to nothing above the DS118 that I have.

Obviously I know many prefer the second drive but it's of no use to me so I guess I'm still waiting for a new single bay model after 7 or 8 years.

Just like fifa games, increase the number on the box and hope no one notices you're selling the same thing year after year.

They can keep their crappy NAS’s stuck at 1GBE. It’s 2023.

In 2023, 1 Gb nic's should be outlawed. So much kit still only comes with 1 Gb, when 2.5 Gb is almost the same cost.

    Routers are just as bad. Asus do XT8's and XT9's which is a £250 router that comes with 1 x 2.5Gb and then 4 x 1 Gb. It's insane, at £250 all 5 ports should be 2.5 Gb. Or 1 x 10Gb and 4 x 2.5Gb

I bought a small form factor Lenovo desktop with an i3 10100, 16GB RAM, 256GB Nvme and efficient SFX PSU for around £175 a few months ago.

Far better than these things and very energy efficient, I added in a couple of hard drives and has been running unRAID flawlessly since. (edited)

Seems ok, but depends what you want it for. Use my nas as a Plex server, virtual machine for home assistant, back up for all the photos taken by me and my partner, and this would struggle with all this. I had the 220+, but upgraded to the 920+. This can have a ram upgrade, 4 bays and can transcode media when it's being used as a Plex server. Ive got all my mum and dad's films and other stuff which they access from 7 miles away, no problem at all. IMHO Synology is one of the best brands to go for, but make sure you buy the right one for your needs. I bought the 220+ and then wished I'd bought the 920+. Yes you can build your own and save a lot of cash, but these are small and compact, look neat next to your telly, loads of free software to do various things, and just saves the hassle if you're not mega tech savvy with DIY nas making. Voted hot, good deal (edited)

Great price, looking to replace my ageing and very slow DS214se and this fits the bill perfectly. Just be advised it doesn't officially support Plex yet, when I checked the supported models list earlier it's showing as supported on a preview version only so there should be full support soon I imagine.

I've been considering a NAS as my laptop and phone hardrive are full and need somewhere to offload the data.

Can anyone explain "Keep your shots and clips organised using Synology Photos’ smart sorting functions"

Most of the data between the laptop and phone are duplicates so it was backed up elsewhere. Will the NAS know that when importing files or will I have to manually remove all the duplicates?

I’ve found with MacOS, that I can move the photos App Library on to the NAS, to save space. With loads of photos it struggles a little over Wi-Fi. However, wired, no issues.

    **edit - IGNORE**.
    I have just spotted a ds420+ with 4 x 10tb Toshiba N300 (40tb) new for £884.
Comparing the price of the drives alone, it means the box is free.
Yet the 24tb is priced at over £1100.
    .
So it seems too good to be true. Is it?
I won't be using it for anything more intensive than local and mobile streaming, with Plex and others, and photo/music storage (edited)

Any recommendations for a simple photo/media archive/server. Don't want to continue paying for Google Photos as i'm reaching the next bracket and it would probably be cheaper in the long run to host my own server.

Just want basic features enabled such as auto backup of mobile photos/videos and then remote access IF it is secure.

Not sure what specs i'd need and i already have 2 spare 6-8gb WD reds ready to be used.
