In what respects? were people eligible to cancel because of removal of a channel(s)?

Wonder who caved in... Sky or Discovery.
My guess would be Sky, as they were probably having loads of requests from people wanting to terminate their contract early.

Some people thought they were due to something in the terms and conditions about being disadvantaged if viewing material was removed. Theres more info on the original thread

I'm genuinely interested to know if that would have been the case, never really crossed my mind.

I think the price increase is still going ahead though, so most people will be eligible to cancel anyway.

I should say Sky needed Discovery more than vice versa.

No way. Discovery needs Sky. They are the biggest distribution method for their channels without Sky, Discovery would lose most of their viewers.

    I doubt Sky caved in

How else would Discovery get their channels out there? They wouldn't get much going freeview. The only other option would have been an online streaming service. Wasn't going to happen

I bet they offered more as a result of all the cancelation/rebate requests they got.

Discovery tried to blackmail Sky, Sky called their bluff and discovery folded.

Without Sky's £120m a year and the massive loss in advertising they would have on the back of losing Sky's platform, discovery would fold or be forced to majorly cut services.

    I am pleased though

Discovery cover WWII like no other channel does & that should always be available for all of us.

    Brilliant News.

Almost mentioned on Sky Site -> sky.com/dis…ore

    [quote=MrScotchBonnet
We would have been allowed to cancel on the terms that if they took the channels off, sky would be in breech of contract, for any change of subscription including channel changed sky has to give 31 days of change, because that wasn't gives customers the right to cancel no term charges applied. Oviously now channels are staying that would no longer stand

I thought that finished years ago.

used to love the nature documentaries on discovery, but their not even on par with the BBC anymore. but glad they stayed, I still like their science and space programs lol

Just seen a massive billboard from Virgin Media saying there's still time to transfer because of the Discovery channels etc....I wonder how much they spent on them.

    A stack load

Your sources are absolute clowns if they think Sky caved in. More like Discovery bottled it and realised the amount of revenue lost as Sky is theyre main source of income in the U.K. Sky was preparing for them to depart and the money would've been invested in content to combat them, yet more nonsense spouted by Discovery. They have a £1billion Olympics deal that there trying to get other providers to pay for as they're sponsors backed out. Most customers where not bothered when they heard how much Discovery wanted for 12 channels.

I did get out of my contract early a few days ago. I had 9 months left of my minimum term and used this situation to cancel penalty free.

I just hope they don't go back on that and try to reverse it.

I'm going to have to check for sure tomorrow because them staying on sky invalidates the T's & C's i used to get out of the contract early.

it should be ok as my final bill is what they said it would be but my luck is that bad, they'll likely kick me in the nuts over it

I was hoping Discovery left sky and joined up with amazon to offer some competition in the market....... Looks like same old same old and I bet another rise in sky prices is just around the corner.

Anybody know sky email address for complaints please.

    Contract law mate.

If they agreed your exit then that forms the contract. So unless there are stipulations attached in the same agreement of leaving then you can do what you want. They cannot revert to the terms or any part of the terms of normal business. For them to have a get out clause then it must be included in your recent agreement to leave. Assuming you did the agreement via chat or email & you have a copy, then you have nothing to worry about.

Sky needed Discovery more than Discovery needed Sky, considering Discovery via Eurosport have the full pan-European rights to the Olympics (BBC only 200 hours of Team GB coverage)

out of curiosity...how much has Sky paid for Discovery?

and there is a pice hike something like £2.50 a month

They have already announced a price hike in March which was shown on here earlier and the 30 day cancellation thing because of it.

I sent it already they replied and they allowed me to exit my Phone & Broadband contract but not my TV contract :(,

Digitalspy have reported it as Discovery dropping their demands and meeting what sky offered a week ago before it all kicked off.
