LEGO prices to rise from September 1st 2022 - Don't get caught out!

Its official and has been on many LEGO fans radar for the last few months, but LEGO is raising prices of around a quarter of its portfolio all over the world.

Today, August 1st saw North America and Asia's price hikes, which saw some sets being increased by over 25% of their original RRP. Based on info from the US, Canada and Australia here are some tips and tricks to avoid been bitten hard by these price hikes.

  • When will the price hike come into effect?

In some countries they have, but for the UK and the rest of Europe we will see price hikes hit September 1st at LEGO Shop and it is very likely other retailers will follow sooner than later.

  • Why the increase?

LEGO have issued rising costs as the reason for the need to increase the price of their goods, now weather you believe that or think it is LEGO being greedy then that's up for you to decide. Regardless it won't change anything sadly, the price rises have already hit some and are coming soon.

  • What sets might increase in the UK?

I have compiled a list of over 100 sets that have risen in North America and Australia (using America, Canada and Australia)

The tables below only look at sets that retail for at least £45 (currently anyway). Larger sets have been hit the hardest, with many having $50 and even one with an AUD $150 increase (roughly £85). Whiles these have increased in these markets below this doesn't mean they will in the UK, but the odds are not in our favour on them not.

3975539_1.jpg3975539_1.jpg3975539_1.jpg
Also looking at new August 1st sets, we know that Speed Champions single cars will now be £19.99 instead of £17.99 (with the March 2022 wave likely to increase September 1st)

  • What sets to watch out for?

This isn't the first price hike in Europe, and its shocking how soon it is, the last we saw was only at the start of 2022, when we saw a large proportion of sets increase with some up to 25%, and we suspect some of those sets will increase AGAIN!

The sets to watch out for are these:

- LEGO Creator Expert 10255 Assembly Square - released 2017 at £179.99 - Jan 2022 price rose by £50 to £229.99 and could possibly rise again!
- LEGO Creator Expert 10270 Bookshop - released 2020 at £149.99 - Jan 2022 price rose by £10 to £159.99
- LEGO Creator Expert 10265 Ford Mustang - released 2019 at £119.99 - Jan 2022 price rose by £5 to £124.99
- LEGO Creator Expert 10295 Porsche 911 - released 2021 at £114.99 - Jan 2022 price rose by £10 to £124.99
- LEGO Architecture 21056 Taj Mahal - released 2021 at £89.99 - Jan 2022 price rose by £15 to £104.99
- LEGO Creator 3in1 31109 Pirate Ship - released 2020 at £89.99 - Jan 2022 price rose by £15 to £104.99

Also some newly released sets might see hikes

- LEGO City 60336 Freight Train - £159.99 (released June 1st 2022)
- LEGO Creator Expert 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine - £149.99 (released April 1st 2022)
- LEGO Creator Expert 10302 Optimus Prime - £149.99 (released June 1st 2022)
- LEGO City 60337 Express Passenger Train - £129.99 (released June 1st 2022)
- LEGO City 60339 Double Loop Stunt Arena - £124.99 (released June 1st 2022)

- What sets will increase?

Thankfully both The Entertainer and Selfridges have given some infight to the potential prices sets will be increasing. To see the entire list - see this comment here

Some of the most worrying price increases are:

- Technic 42143 Ferrari Daytona - £389.99 (up £40)
- Technic 42115 Lamborghini Sian - £389.99 (up £40)
- DC 76240 Batmobile Tumbler - £229.99 (up £30)
- Technic 42130 BMW M 1000 RR - £214.99 (up £40)
- Technic 42140 Transformation Vehicle - £129.99 (up £15)
- Technic 42111 Dom's Dodge Charger - £104.99 (up £15)

- IDEAS 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog - Green Hill Zone - £69.99 (up £10)
- Star Wars 75329 Death Star Trench Run - £59.99 (up £5)
- Icons 10280 Flower Bouquet - £54.99 (up £10)

  • Ones to buy before September 1st

Basically any set that is only sold at LEGO Shop or with limited availability, these sets will only see few discounts. Retailers like John Lewis, Smyths Toys, Argos and IWOOT all sell exclusive sets that only them and LEGO Shop sell.

For more on which sets are exclusives read my frequently updated list of retailer exclusive sets in the UK - Exclusive LEGO sets (where to find them)

Some advice for anyone unsure on weather or not to buy some of the sets Argos have reduced which you want but fear might rise.

I'd recommend ordering them for instore pick up and then not collecting them until after September 1st when you can see if they have or haven't increased in RRP, if they do then you can pick it up if you can't see it becoming cheaper again, but if its RRP does not increase then you can decided whether now is the good time to buy it and if you don't or can't get it now and don't feel the rush as its RRP hasn't increased just cancel or don't collect your order and get a refund, likelihood is those sets will likely see another price drop again (maybe cheaper)

Argos have a 7 day collection period but you can extend by another 7 days so will have plenty of time to do this.

One thing for sure the International Space Station WON'T increase as it is retiring this year, but doubt we will see anything near £40 again. (edited)

I try to build and display but space is the issue, so sadly yeah some items I dismantle and box back up, though at that point I recently have decided if I can't display it why have it. So got a few sets I have which are on the chopping block for the next eBay offer which is this weekend.

    NOT the Track!!!

    - City 60238 Switch Tracks - £17.99 (up £2)
    - City 60205 Track and Flexi-track - £17.99 (up £2)

Agreed the £20 increase on a set already on the upper end of the them for Jurassic World is a tough pill to swallow.

I thought I had all the JW Sets but can't find the Triceratops.

If it goes up a fiver which is what I estimate I'll swallow the pill.

My 4 year old is suddenly interested in lego. We have 2 sets and 1 box of cheap alternative bits from B&M but looking to get a large supply of actual lego blocks for him.
Anyone know where the current best deals are on blocks rather than sets? All I see on UKHD is sets atm.

LEGO Classic is the best theme for you

Buy LEGO Classic 4+ Around the World Building Bricks Set 11015 | LEGO | Argos - £33.75 (RRP £44.99)
Buy LEGO Classic Medium Creative Brick Box Building Set 10696 | LEGO | Argos - £18.75 (RRP £24.99)
    LEGO 11021 Classic 90 Years of Play : Amazon.co.uk: Toys & Games - £37.99 (RRP £44.99)
    LEGO 11013 Classic Creative Transparent Bricks : Amazon.co.uk: Toys & Games - £15.99 (RRP £24.99)

Though if you are wanting basic brick boxes, I'd wait till the supermarket toy sales, Morrisons always seem to have a brick box on their buy one get one free or half price toy sale (hopefully its the BOGOF and not just half price as they seemed to inflate prices on the half price deal for some reason). Also ASDA typically reduce a large Brick Box.

Appreciate the info I think after 20 years this may be the end of my collecting days . The last couple of years the sets have got smaller yet the same price (sneaky price rise).

Now they are actually adding 25% to the prices. I’m actually worried for the future of Lego as a company because they are starting to prices themselves away from the children that Lego was initially aimed at.
    Kazloav's avatar
Its the big kids that buy the bricks, children have no interest.
  9. simonmcnair's avatar
Vote with your wallet and don't buy. The price would go back down again. Lego is already expensive. No way covid or brexit caused these price increases. Just greed. (edited)

The only people who are buying LEGO are NOT just investors they are either AFOL's, Parents, Aunt's and Uncle's etc. I have kids who love LEGO my nephew's are a huge Ninjago fans.
Yes, there are people who do buy to invest but there are also people who like to build and display, I have friends who build and display LEGO and also loads of members on this site do too.
So please get your facts right and don't just assume.
    Happy building!

Many thanks for all the info. Hmmmmm....Many sets were only really "affordable" with healthy discounts (Black Friday, clearance, Prime Day, GWP, double VIP points etc.), but such (potentially) huge increases, while living costs have increased, could prove too much for many people. Risky strategy for LEGO? As Discoseb mentioned, over the years prices have effectively already gone up. To slip a rant in; the most ridiculously priced set must be the recent 75334 (Obi-Wan vs Darth Vader). I collect Star Wars stuff, but this set surely needs to be more than 50% discounted to be worth it? Unlikely to happen....Anyway, minifig290 you were more succinct in summing up the "why".....I more than understand the challenges in the current economic climate and state of the world in general, but all the companies that are charging their so-called increased production and transport costs to the consumer are 1) increasing the prices over and beyond the hikes they incur, and 2) are all reporting huge profits (BP, Shell, Heineken etc.) at the moment. I know it is to safeguard against costs they are still to incur, but I am sceptical as to whether they are going to report losses in the future. Oh well, like you said, discussing this to death is not going to help, the reality is that the hikes are upon us and so one needs to adjust one's hobby. It is a first-world problem in the end.....
    discoseb's avatar
As a fan of the ninjago mechs (or anything mech based) the recent price increase for these sets is just mad. The newest mech (71775) rrp is priced at £99 . The most recent one before this (71765) was rrp £79 with more bricks and i managed to buy for £60ish. I simply can’t justify paying in the range of £80 for something that was previously valued at far less roughly 3 months ago. I understand the economic struggles but as you said, when these companies are still posting massive profits in the billions it’s begs the question of, are these company’s actually effected by the crises at all.

As you said “first world problems” but I feel a little broken hearted that a toy that made my childhood so great is getting further and further away from my own Childrens reach.

This is just pure greed and exploitation on Lego's part. Their last reported annual earnings were $11.1 billion in revenue with $3.4 billion in profit!

So, they were already working with a 30% nett profit margin which most companies would kill for

I don't see how plastic is really this expensive as we chuck it on the streets and in the oceans. Most of the cost is probably down to transport, packaging and product development.

Regardless, these prices were originally extortionate and for that reason, I'm oot.

i did like LEGO (before it became super popular) but it seems like lego is ripping people off (sets at £400 seems nuts to me?) cos people must be willing to pay silly prices (almost 2billion £ in profits), but of course they are luxury items so they are not necessary to buy....

they were always expensive, but i dont think they were ever that expensive years ago...
omg the i use to have the monorail and the castle and both are selling for £300 odd on ebay haha

they will probably increase the prices, then they can offer panic buy "sales" all the time... (edited)

Lego was already very popular when I was only few years old. I'm over 40 now. So, what do you mean "before it became super popular"?

I brought two sets about a month ago I guess those will be my last two!

Any recommendations for a deal before the price hike for me to go out with?

    Will spend up to £170.

With these prices rises and the child now being a teenager I’m probably out. That said we’re having a clear out and have come across some of the Batman Arkham sets from 8-10 years ago with the boxes in the loft - are they worth anything in the aftermarket? I can’t remember what sets but one included the original joker in orange jumpsuit which I remember was quite sought after at one point. (edited)

continuing my previous moan of the prices being somewhat too high, i also do not like how they make all the packaging thin and easily rippable / not resuable so people end up chucking the box out and not putting it back in the box....the boxes use to be quality and reusable...

LEGO is already insanely overpriced so this is just pure greed. It's literally just moulded plastic, it costs pennies to make. Corporations keep raising prices just because they can, eventually people are going to stop buying and then the price will magically come back down again. It's all so tiresome.

No idea why people pay so much for LEGO, it's absolutely insane what they charge for most of their sets.

Lego used to be a toy for creative kids letting them build anything from imagination, now it's an expensive paint-by-numbers for hoarding manchildren.

How are kids supposed to afford this?!

Therein lies the problem - is Lego for kids or collectors. It looks like they made their choice
