• Resolution

  Resolution tells you how detailed the picture on the TV will be. OLEDs tend to be 4K (4,096 pixels) that provide clear and defined pictures that should suit most TV viewers. If you want to be future-proof, then perhaps have a look at 8K OLED TVs that pack in double the resolution of 4K OLEDs, but bear in mind that these tend to be much more expensive than 4K OLED TVs and currently there is not much content filmed in 8K.

• Size

  Choosing the right screen size is a vital part of finding an OLED TV that works for you. Sizes range from 32-inches to 75-inches (and some are even bigger), so they lean toward the larger end of the TV spectrum and the most common is a 55 inch OLED TV. When choosing the size, think about the way you watch TV. As a rule of thumb, the recommended viewing distance for a 4K OLED is between 1 to 1.5 times the screen size. So if you get a 50-inch TV, it should be placed 50 to 75 inches away from your sofa. The best way to work out your ideal screen size is to measure your living room or lounge, and calculate the distance between your sofa and the most probable location for your TV. That way, calculating the right distance and screen sizes should be simple and you'll avoid neck strain or discomfort from being too close.

• Refresh Rate

  This measurement rates how quickly a TV can change frames, and the faster the refresh rate, the smoother your movies or football matches will play. 60Hz has become standard for flat screen TVs, but if you really want to avoid blurring, a rate of around 120Hz is the minimum to look for with an OLED TV.

• Visuals

  If possible, head down to a shop to see a TV in action before making a purchase. That's because the contrast ratios and resolutions described by manufacturers are often misleading. It's important to get a good idea of how a TV performs in the real world before going online to secure the best possible price.

• Sound Quality

  One of the drawbacks of the ever-reducing thickness of TVs is that manufacturers have tended to downgrade the power of their speakers. It's rare to find an OLED TV with top of the range audio performance, though some come close. So it's probably worth thinking about adding speakers or a soundbar. It's not a massive outlay if you're serious about movies or sport, and it makes a massive difference.

• HDMI Ports

  HDMI ports are a really useful addition to any flat-screen TV, as they allow you to connect speakers, computers, Blu-Ray players, soundbars, plug-ins like Chromecast, and games consoles. Four ports should be enough for most families, but some people may need as many as possible. Don't get stuck with a great TV with poor connectivity. It's an underrated part of the package.

• Finance

  Not every deal is for an upfront TV purchase. In fact, when OLED TVs can cost in well in excess of £1,000, many retailers offer payments in instalments. If you want to take advantage of credit deals, look for interest-free packages and beware of deals that are too good to be true.
