sorted byEdit - can get a larger battery by choosing "no harddrive" rather than "dummy harddrive". I had to reorder. (edited)
The 4500U/16GB/256GB SSD with fingerprint reader, backlit keyboard, and the top specced screen, plastic palmrest.
The build quality is very nice ,the plastic palmrest is much better than I had expected.
Its similar in size to last years Huawei Matebook 15 which I have.
I installed Win 10 on one of the laptops this evening ,it took about 5 minutes !
After installing Win 10 ,I had to tether my phone to the laptop as it doesn't have any wifi drivers installed .
It automatically installed most of the drivers then.
I've been running it off the battery and also off the power supply and I've only heard the fan kick in for 20-30 seconds a few times ,its pretty much silent so far, which is brilliant.
The screen is quality ,it looks great even without me calibrating it .
The laptop is really smooth in operation ,like butter.
Granted I've not pushed it yet but initial impressions are that its a serious bit of kit and we've bagged a serious bargain. (edited)
Is the RAM single or dual channel?
According to the data sheet single, according to the test report dual channel.
We wont know for sure until the first people receive their machines.
My guess would be that at least the 16 GB config is dual channel.
Which screen should I choose?
My recommendation would be the most expensive panel because it offers the best color rendering (99% sRGB). A bad screen can spoil the fastest and most powerful device and cannot be replaced afterwards without much effort. Unless you absolutely need touch, then select the non touch variant.
Which charger should I choose? Standard or the stronger one with 95W and USB-C?
The advantage of the more powerful charger is the faster charging process. However, the USB-C port is permanently occupied and the normal power supply connection remains unused. However, if you want to use a USB-C port hub anyway (for example to retrofit a display port or Ethernet), you can also connect the charger to it and benefit from the stronger charging process and more power for additional peripherals.
Can I add additional RAM?
According to the current status NO, since there is no slot.
Can I retrofit a SATA hard drive?
Yes, if you order the device with a SATA disk or choose the dummy option. Caution: if you choose: no hard drive you can select the stronger, 70 Wh battery. This is larger than the normal one and it no longer allows the fitting of a SATA disk.
The replacement of the M2 SSD should be possible in any case.
Where can I see the different housing colors?
lenovo.com/gb/…393 under Features
Can I game with it?
Latest AAA titles with the highest details probably no, but a little WoW and the like will run quite passable.
Here is a benchmark:
Are the upgrades to WiFi 6, fingerprint and keyboard lighting worthwhile?
In most cases yes, especially for the small surcharge. (edited)
Try LEN-EXCL-HS! (edited)
I would have never guessed. if only they put "school" or "education" in the name...
If you're gaming then the Intel is stronger, however the MX350 isn't going to provide an amazing experience for gaming.
If you're not gaming the Ryzen 4800U is going to be much more powerful.
Yeah I'm sure it'll be released and I'll end up doing another cycle of ordering and cancelling. Upto 6 orders now, managed to cancel most.
For me I'd love:
13"
QHD IPS
4800U
16GB
Metal build (edited)
Click student beans at bottom, when that screen loads just click the back to Lenovo button and it lets me in the education store without logging in and can customise laptops to whatever specs are on here
Yes, they have and that's also true for the 15" Intel model bumping up the the prices quite significantly. Interestingly, the 14" Intel still retains FreeDOS. Lenovo now charge extra for the metal palmrest. Those that bought it before the changes got themselves a stonking deal. (edited)
Much simpler just to download the Intel AX200 wireless driver to your Windows installer USB stick:

It works, feel free to add this to the main post (edited)
70Wh is possible if you choose no mechanical drive rather than dummy drive.
Is this confirmed and do you have a link. It's just previously Lenovo have said for idealpads the soldered memory is the 1st channel and the slot is the 2nd channel but this appears to only have memory soldered on the board with no slot. I realise it would not be difficult to to make onboard memory dual channel but would just like to see it confirmed as this is an entry level chassis.
I saw a Ryzen comparison for Project Cars II which uses both the onboard gpu and cpu extensively unlike typical games and the difference in frame rate between single channel and dual channel was 3x. About 15fps for single channel and 45fps for dual channel. I realise this is an extreme difference that is rare but shows how single channel can cripple a ryzen at least for those using it for games with the onboard GPU.
My current laptop has single channel memory using a A10 8700P chipset which has meant for gaming it didn't achieve much of an upgrade on the laptop before it for games even though for normal desktop use it was a huge upgrade.
A product key for Windows only costs £5. I put that in the description along with some instructions on getting windows (free of microsoft website)
The most expensive screen has the best colour accuracy and it is not touch screen. The touchscreen one has worser colour accuracy, which explains why its £5 cheaper despite it being touchscreen.
As this will be a work machine for me, getting a 15" with a 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM is impressive but throwing that processor in there for under £550 I couldnt say no - slept on it last night and here i am up at 7am ordering :P
Spec i got for £546

Reviews are excellent too
Leaving the charger plugged is better not worse for Lithium Ion and running to empty is also worse for the battery.
batteryuniversity.com/lea…ies
You're best minimising battery cycles by leaving plugged in as much as possible. To reduce battery wear you're best not charging to max and not emptying below 20%. (edited)
When you are knocking on a bit like me, and your eyes don't really like dimly lit rooms when you are trying to type, the keys are soooooooo much easier to see when they are backlit.
Great if you don't want to put a light on also.
That laptop is the latest 13" version
Its very quiet ,which was my biggest worry .
The fan rarely comes on and when it does its for a short 20 second burst ,and its low volume.
I went for the top specced screen and its very nice ,bright enough during the day and sharp .
I have it scaled to 125% ,text is too small at 100%.
Performance is excellent ,everything is effortless and smooth .
I've not pushed it hard yet though but I have no doubt it wont be found wanting .
Its a really nice laptop ,the only criticism I could possibly have is that its not an all aluminium build but the plastic is actually very nice . (edited)
That's an absolutely insane price for an 8-core, 16-thread processor!
mydealz.de/dea…306
I was hoping it would be launched in the UK as I could not get an English keyboard layout on the German site and would have had to use a forwarding service.
Its a fantastic offer. (edited)
But these are great specs for the price. 4000 series Ryzen mobile is a game changer. And a 6 core 12 thread model like this is really going to be enough for a huge amount of people.
Waiting for that Ryzen 4000 Thinkpad, personally...
Edit: Whoops I thought this was 4600u... this is 6 core 6 thread. Ryzen 4xxx cores though! (edited)
I would go with this. The new Ryzen CPUs are the way to go.
Sorry, the link was to the rewards store which doesn't work here. I've provided the correct link for the new 14" AMD version which is not listed in the shop yet: lenovo.com/gb/…392
This is half aluminium lid and the plastic palmrest and base. 15" model
The 14" version can be configured like the Intel version you ordered with full aluminium.
The 14" Ryzen 4th gen isnt out yet but should be released shortly, but you dont know if the discounts will last by then.
So as a place holder ive order this 15" version taking advanatge of the discounts, if the 14" is released soon will cancel and order that instead.
Well spotted. Also if anyone is wondering, the 16GB DDR4 is dual channel.
It looks like the 15" models of both Intel and Ryzen have just plastic bottoms. No way you can get a metal bottom. The 14" models for both have the all metal build available.
Also, you get the metal top in all versions of the 15" irrespective of the screen chosen.

However, if you need a 15.6" screen for home use, there is no better laptop out there anywhere near this price point
I am just so excited for Ryzen. Loads of performance making Intel s*** in their territory (edited)
