sorted by- I will accept the logic that we want money going into the economy so offering 50% off to encourage people to spend more or more often makes sense. Why are they forcing people to sit in to avail of this? Surely the focus is on increased spending not increasing risk to staff and public. Am i being daft? Have I missed something??
- DINE IN
Come for the savings, stay for the covid. Idiotic. And I've antibodies - Wouldn't it be more helpful if we spend our money with independent restaurants/cafes etc who are using the government's 50% discount scheme. McDonalds will still exist after Covid, the little independents probably won't. Surely they need our money more than ever. Just saying, obviously its your money, spend it however you want. (edited)

Aye, support local but don't forget to line Amazon's pockets, spend money, put yourself in debt, stay home but go out, definitely go out, oh but don't catch covid if you go out, be alert, essential journeys only, check your eye sight often.
Think I'll be sitting out all these offers, sounds great in theory but think my arteries can handle missing a few pub grubs.
Stay safe folk (edited)- I like McDonalds but I'm not prepared to eat in yet, knowing the masses really dont give a toss any more. My local McDs is frequented by plenty of undesirables unfortunately!
However plenty of local, independant restaurants here who are taking Social distancing seriously for their staff & customers so no reason to follow the masses! DazLFC26/07/2020 02:03
Govt are subsidising the other 50% so business doesn't lose out
You're missing my point. We know social distancing is effective, why crowd people indoors and entice even more people with large discounts? It goes against everything they've been advising for months.deleted249413526/07/2020 02:13

Course I don’t want anyone losing jobs (edited)- how will they know? i sometime take away the leftover after dine in.

I'm not eating out, anywhere. I live with someone that is extremely vulnerable and I don't care about what the government are doing to try and encourage people to eat out. This situation is on a knife's edge and the government are doing a bad job of protecting us.
This 'deal' from McDonald's is extremely stupid, it is completely the wrong time to be offering it.nathen8826/07/2020 01:14

They don’t want people in crowded restaurants ether. They want socially distanced restaurants 2 metres apart. Again I thought that be obvious. Everyone thinks they can run a country now a days. Damned if they do damned if they don’t. People will find a way to moan about how much is/isn’t being spent what is/isn’t being done. We want more support but we don’t wanna pay more tax. We really need to stop saying "government" and replace it with "taxpayer".
This be me not wanting to miss out on cheap Mc Donald’s (edited)- Perhaps the dumbest government scheme yet (and its got some serious competition). As already said, Boris is launching his "lose weight - get healthy" scheme at the same time as "Half price burgers and other junk food" goes live. I know that governments rarely do joined up thinking but, really, this is on another level. Perhaps targeting the offer on meals below a certain calorific density might have helped to combine the 2 messages. I guess it's right up there with the "when we reopen the economy we are going to be much greener" followed very quickly by "go back to your office - don't use public transport" so asking people to get in their individual cars and drive to work even though they have been very effectively working from home.
To be honest, a half price meal isn't going to encourage me back in to a pub/cafe/restaurant anyway. I've spent months listening to very stern spokespeople saying "Stay Home, Protect the NHS. Save Lives" and "this is very serious". Now it's "go out and eat in an enclosed environment as everything's fine (but be aware!)". All to save a tenner - no thanks.
Just for clarity, I used to enjoy a McD's and, if things ever get back to normal (that's a proper normal, not a new normal) I will probably go there again for something every couple of months or so. bonewinski26/07/2020 02:40
cheap plastic food for the pot noodle generation
Come on now, there’s no need to bring Pot Noodle into this.- Well you could always order and have a bag to put it in afterwards. Eat a few chips and walk out.
However I did think it was only supposed to be small independent restaurants. (edited) - I guess I’ll be giving ordering for delivery from them a miss for now, then, if I’m being penalised for staying inside. Won’t be going to eat inside there either. So, they just won’t get my custom, at all, for the foreseeable future.

I can understand it's to help restaurants but it should either apply to both eat in and take away / delivered food or just to businesses that don't have a take away / delivery option. All this will do is encourage people to sit in, which seems totally insane but I suppose the government knows that it will only affect the poorer people.... Not knocking the deal BTW!
Some people need to open their eyes and see there is other people in the world other then themselves. The whole point of the exercise is to stop people being made redundant from restaurants because no one is eating out. If the restaurant is clean and they social distance I don’t see the issue. It’s no different to going to the supermarket if anything probably more likely to get from a supermarket. I’m assuming you haven’t been to a supermarket since lockdown started seeing as you seem so angry about groups of people or been outside in any form. It’s like the parents that can’t possibly send their child to school because it’s dangerous but go to a packed beach where social distancing is out the window.- Author

Quite disappointing of McDonalds to be using this scheme, but I shouldn't …Quite disappointing of McDonalds to be using this scheme, but I shouldn't be surprised really. I'm not anti-McDonalds, as I do enjoy one every now and again. So they're going to get millions in payouts every week (pro rata) while most of their staff are on tax credits because McDonalds doesn't pay them enough. This scheme wasn't brought in for the likes of McDonalds. It was brought in to protect independent businesses not huge multinationals. They'll be able to weather the storm without worrying. Your local pubs, cafes and restaurants are the ones that need this and our help.
but most McD's are franchised aren't they? I think its something like 1100 out of the 1300 in the UK, so they are all small businesses, doubt many of them are getting millions per week in government handouts.
Wetherspoons would be a better example to use, with around 900 pubs and hotels, all owned by the same person.bonewinski26/07/2020 02:40
