    3 years ago I did the Web dev boot camp on udemy to start learning from scratch how to do Web development. 6 months later I became a Jr developer at my work. Cut to this week and I am a full developer.

    It took a lot of effort, training and perseverance but in the past 3 years I've doubled my pay and now have more freedom in my work and when I get more experience I'll be able to do it anywhere in the world.

    My point is, no matter your age (I'm 35), no matter your past (I have zero qualifications, highest level of education is secondary school), you can do anything if you just try.

    Heres a hot tip. Kali linux is just a collection of installed software. Its like calling yourself a decorator if you bought a set of brushes.

    Ethical hacking is not an "off the shelf" skillset. You need to be a competent software engineer to even begin to competently hack anything. Demolitions experts need at least some structural knowledge. But damaging something so that it breaks without being suspected of demolition? Thats an advanced engineering skillset. These courses arent going to do much other than basic network security testing drills. Running a tracert doesnt make you an ethical hacker, despite what they say.

    Ah I didn't realise it was a collection of products, I thought it was a product in its own right (this is why I need to do a little scrubbing up before it!).

    I have a networks background so totally get that and I wasn't looking to do one of these courses and then blag I was a full on ethical hacker.....it's an internal move/opportunity so just doing a bit of research on it leading onto being properly trained (hopefully!)

    You sound like you have the right mindset!!

    In terms of kali more specifically, it IS an OS - its a Linux distro, but its just a Linux distro with some useful tweaks and preinstalled tools. If you arent that familiar with Linux, then *nix/unixlike understanding and familiarity should be a priority before you step into anything else. Maybe you are tho.

    Would say if you are coming in at this level and have network experience, a really good thing to do is read up on Kali, and what comes with it, and install and play around with those tools in a separate environment. The reason I say that, is these courses are dreadful for saying things like "we are going to use Kali to start nmap"

    Nmap is something you are probably familiar with if you work in networks, but its almost criminal to suggest it has anything to do with kali. Just as an example, Its an incredible program that has existed long before someone bundled it with a "hacker" OS and has a history spanning back to before it was used by Trinity in The Matrix

    Just food for thought. Always be cautious around the word "hacker", we have a bad habit (particularly in the UK) of letting marketing proceed real knowledge.

    Most of the time youtube is a better source than fake free udemy course.

    You should try eDx.org . Had a quick glance and there's around 5 or 6 free CyberSecurity courses taught at various University's. Just make sure you select to Audit the course. But hands down one of the best free resources for I.T based stuff out there. You can get classes from Harvard, Yale, MIT, and directly from Google and Microsoft themselves (edited)

    Thank you, already got that one, was looking at the second Power BI on the list, it seems to have more content.

    At the moment I'm more than happy with any Power BI ones, as need to learn as much as possible on this for work, so the more the better.

    Perhaps I've just been very lucky then. I'm currently studying 2 course from Udemy in Python and SQL. Both cost £10ish and both have been extremly well presented with great resources and have taught me a huge amount.

    I had 0 prior knowledge of computer programming before starting.

    I've just enrolled in a number of these free courses and will see how they go when I start them. I accept that some may not be great......but in terms of value for money I think the courses are very good.
