Baloney, this is a myth just like Germans build the best car.

Cant speak for ATS I must admid, but National and Kwikfit I can.
Myself, 2 family members and my best mate had issues where they tried to rip us off.
Kwikfit failed my mates car, he drove for 5 minutes and 1.4 miles to next mot garage 40 minutes later it passed, no faults found.
My ex took her car to Kwikfit and they said it needed brakes and discs, she called me to ok repair and bring money.
I went down and asked if the new discs and pads fitted 48 hours ago were faulty, as could claim under warranty, guess what it then passed.

Price is too cheap, someone will have to pay.

Personally I only ever get my MOT at a place that only does MOTs. They have no incentive to upsell a repair.
  4. bainster1's avatar
Off topic maybe but I use my local council MOT centre, they don't do repairs so there's no incentive and usually it passes, if it doesn't I know exactly what needs done... and what doesn't.
It's not for everybody but I know very little about cars and repairs so it works for me.

This is very true and used this service myself.

Once your cars in the air having the tracking checked for free, when they tell you it’s out of line always say no thanks and wait for them to knock the price down
    Crispy_Ambulance's avatar
They actually adjust it for free?

Lots of people coming out with the same drivel on this thread.

Lets be realistic about this, to do what they are going to do for £18 means they have to somehow recover some money otherwise they would go bust, my guess is they will generate jobs from this, the problem is that what ever it fails on, if you take it to another garage for another MOT they can see all the failures, as such why would they then give the vehicle an MoT, I would not risk it myself, I work at a garage so I know exactly what can go on.

MOTs have to be done to a standard no matter the price and if you think you’ve been ripped off you can report them to the DVSA

Used this for my 30 year old vw campervan. They spent an hour doing the tracking and did a crackin job. The van passed with no advisories.
Last week I used it on my 2015 208 (different location), passed with just advisories on 2 tyres and they didn't even try to sell me any replacements.

Is your statement backed with any facts or are you just going off an old Thats Life program you saw in the 70s?

I took advantage of this deal a couple of years ago and they were great.
I would have gone there again (Galashiels) but they don't do the Groupon offer anymore.

Kwik Fit (Galashiels) on the other hand, who used to be very good, I would never darken their doors again.

I had some very serious words with the manager at the time and I'm disappointed that I did not call the DVSA to make a complaint.

If folks are being ripped off, call DVSA and get it logged.

Great price, if your local ATS is staffed by decent people.

I'm not sure there is such agreement. It seems to depend on the branch.

Years ago a kwik fit rang me mid-way through a car service saying that "according to their records" I need a new cambelt and that since they were half way through the service they could offer me a good price.

My engine had a chain-driven belt ... (edited)

Used it several times on 3 cars, has been very good. Never failed. Ignore the negative comments above, unless your car is an obvious heap of junk you will not have an issue.

Had no choice, the boot wouldn't open and no local garage would touch it
    Besford's avatar
Why, was there a bomb in there or something? What is it?
  35. DanTheHam's avatar
Tell them on arrival that you have checked over the car and that it seams to be good and no matter what the outcome of the mot that you are only getting the first mot done with them and if it requires a second after servicing at home you will go to a second garage
    Bendown's avatar
Do you honestly believe that would make any difference, You tell them you are a 1 time customer and you expect that to help with a pass?
  36. Liquidsky's avatar
Also off topic but this is no worse than going to a main dealer. My friend took his seat leon to a seat garage for MOT and service. 4K they wanted off him. Failed him on not having a service record book. I jest ye not. Also not having a break down kit. The list goes on. I went in as he was a-bit dim about these things and said the only thing that was a genuine mot failure was the front tyre. Bloody crooks.

I've been a little naughty and not offered up that I'm using a groupon deal until after the MOT is complete. This is against the terms of the voucher but they have a quick grumble and accept it.
  39. craig.vincent-squibb's avatar
Ives used ATS for MOT’s over the years (when I manage to find an offer) and have never had an issue.
Passed each time. Last years it failed on a side light bulb, they said they can’t touch the car without charging labour but if I pull the plug out, they have a bulb.
I pulled it out, they gave me the bulb, I put it back in, they passed my car!!
    Simple, excellent service every time.
I will be purchasing this deal ready for my next MOT for sure 😁

All I will say is that if you check the job description for a Halfords mechanic, they get a basic salary plus comission on any repairs authorised.
I will leave you to draw your own conclusions......
